I was reading about it and reading about it and read it was discovered in 1932, a lark (doubt the wrw what it was) but it's several years before the series is based and Khan's exberts could have devloped it.

I'm no exbert but it posesses great energy and can be very unstable (more then Karnages temper!) so the "jewel" it was in may have been a containment shell made of synthetic crystal that reacted to it being "shaken up" by absorbing and then releasing said energy in a stable flow.

I know that even today it's not being used but few are working on it so Khan's exberts working flat on it may have done it. Regardless it is the sort of thing both Khan and Karnage would be interested in... and any country with energy problems!

Just though it may be interesting to bring up a very plusable theory about it.

It's a good theory. Certainly the 'crystal' was very energetic, storing and releasing energy in bursts unless it was correctly aligned at which point it would supply a practically unlimited amount of power.

The two potential causes of this are either nuclear fusion (known as cold fusion) or a piezo-electric effect (such as is found in quartz).

To be blunt: there is not a process in existence today that can cause something the size of the crystal to produce enough energy to be useful in any way. But this is Disney, so I will overlook that ;) It also violates the laws of thermodynamics as it produces more energy than it can possibly contain, requiring no energetic input. Again, Disney :)

It's interesting to note that:

1) Cold fusion has reportedly worked some times but not others, leaving it scientifically unproven. No researcher has ever been able to duplicate their own process.
2) Piezo-electric properties of quartz mean that the quartz emits a low pulse of electric current when squeezed. This pulse is constant, and is used to time high-end watches.
3) Anti-matter would theoretically provide a source of nearly limitless power, with one drawback: the laws of thermodynamics are still in effect. It takes an enormous amount of power to create a pinhead of anti-matter which must then be contained in a stable magnetic field. Scientists were on cloud nine when they managed, recently, to create a picogram of anti-matter which existed for nearly a full second before annihilating itself. That is the best result they've ever gotten...

So what is the crystal? A writer knows it as a plot device, a roleplayer will recognise it as a macguffin. It's an object that cannot exist, but must exist for the sake of the story.

What powers the crystal? As a fan of Pratchett, I will say it's narrativium, the raw force of stories :)

I'm no physicist, what I ment was what you said and that the jewel was a container for a pinhead of the stuff. But your right on the stuff, interest of yours? I can never say the fancy stuff.

I'd rather agree with ya about the having piezo - electric power by the red P&L crystal. Why? If it would have nuclear power, it'd behave wrse than Urgonium :/

I'm interested in all forms of technology, which has lead to a rather eclectic education, and an almost inevitable love for TaleSpin.

Weird fact of the day: all aircraft designs seen in TaleSpin (with the exception of plot specific aircraft) are aerodynamically sound and would, if reproduced in reality, be able to fly. This includes the Iron Vulture, though I'd make some serious design changes to the propellor gearing and stabilisation, and rework the aft rudder to make it /safe/ to fly ;)

Of course, this is because a lot of the designs were adapted from production or pre-production plans of iconic models, but the design team did a great job in keeping them realistic enough for people like me to marvel at them ;)

I'd agree with the aircraft, in fact many are based on real designs for example the Cape Suzette Air Defence fighter is very much like the P-35 an ancestor of the P-47 fighter and the Vulture is of a desighn where internal gas cells (armoured) counteract the ships weight on an equal basis and the engines prvide vertical motion.

Sounds like they harassed the energy from a thunderbolt.
