We only seem to have two head villains: Steele (Balto 1) and Niju (Balto 2). Now I want to know who's better at being bad.Let's wigh in our competitors.

Steele
Breed: Malamute
Fur Colors: Black and white
Hates: Balto, half-breeds, apparently wolves as far as I can tell
Likes: Being #1, making Balto's life miserable, Jenna
Last seen: In a warehouse after he was left alone for lying

Niju
Breed: Wolf
Fur Colors: Black and blue
Hates: Nava, Aleu, Balto, taking orders
Likes: Leadership, always having his way
Last seen:swimming back to the shore of his old territory after falling of a piece of the ice bridge

I don't view Niju as a villain, just a high ranking wolf who wants to lead and has a bad attitude.

I would have to say Steele. Steele is a far worse character than what Niju is, why? Let's take a look.

Niju:
Niju is at least a beta wolf in this pack and sees Nava weakening. This is a natural behavior with wild wolves. Niju is testing Nava trying to take his role as the Alpha male. Does that make Niju bad? Absolutely not.

Steele:
Steele knew he was a top dog. He made fun of Balto, and didn't care about the children. Steele was nothing more than a show off and a bully.

In other words, you're saying that Steele is (in a sense) better, correct?

Steele is more evil

Neither Steele nor Niju is truly "evil".

Steele is, at worst, a conceited bully. Everything revolves around him in his world. He needs to be at the center of attention, he needs to be popular, and he needs to be respected. When he does not get that, he becomes a callous, heartless bully. Those are not traits which, in of themselves, make someone "evil".

Niju is simply a tragic character. And I don't mean that the way that word would usually be used in a community like this when referring to an unpopular character. I mean he simply is a member of a wolf pack who desperately wants the other pack members to understand his point of view and see that he wants the best FOR the pack. His only flaw is that he is willing to go to extremes in order to get them to appreciate that point of view. But when he is forced to take action, his responses are weak and somewhat wishy-washy, perhaps even cowardly, at best. This hardly makes him "evil". Misguided? Certainly. Stubborn? Sure. "Evil"? Not by a long shot.

When I think back over the animated movies I have seen since childhood (and now analyzing them as an adult with plenty of life experience under my belt), I come to the following conclusion:

There really are VERY few truly "evil" characters in animated movies. And this is just as well, because evil is a harsh concept for children to deal with (and here's a clue, folks: whether or not you like this, ALL of these animated movies, including the Balto ones, were aimed primarily at a CHILD audience). As I consider those animated movies, only the following characters seem to me to truly represent something (or someone) "evil"...the rest are simply villains or antagonists:

  • The Queen from Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs (she tries to eliminate Snow White with a poisoned apple for crying out loud!)

  • Maleficent from Sleeping Beauty (same modus operandi as the previous baddie. And she, just like the queen, really wanted to KILL her youthful charge out of some strange tinge of jealousy)

  • Lady Tremaine from Cinderella (the "wicked stepmother"...who is more than just a heartless bully)

  • Stromboli from Pinocchio (the wicked, cruel puppeteer who burns marionettes when they become incapable of working)

  • Cruella De Vil from 101 Dalmations (anyone with a cold enough heart to want to have puppies brutally killed and then skinned for their coats is definitely evil)

  • Ursula from The Little Mermaid (collecting souls to empower herself? Eesh)

  • Scar from The Lion King (anyone willing to kill his own flesh & blood is definitely evil at heart)

  • Shere Khan from The Jungle Book (he was super cool with that British "lord of the manor" routine, but his desire to kill Mowgli at all costs, and his cold, methodical hunt for the boy, is disturbing and vicious)

  • Nag and Nagaina from Riki Tiki Tavi (two king cobras who set out to purposely kill a human family, which was otherwise presenting no threat to them, simply so they could take control of that house and raise their young in it? Eeeeeeeeeeesh...)

  • Percival C. McLeach from Rescuers Down Under (who's willing to terrorize and then kill a sweet, innocent boy in some sick game over a crocodile-infested river, by feeding him TO the crocodiles in order to protect his dirty little poaching operation)

Note how most of these are Disney movies, by the way? Curious.

But I don't see either Steele or Niju as coming close in behavior to any of these definitely evil villains.

All I wanted to know is who you would not want to run into. I do agree that evil is a bit of an exaggeration.

Odd. Because that's not what you said in your opening statement when you started this topic. You said:

So, at the risk of my being accused of being too critical or harsh, which is it?

Well in that case, Niju. Niju is a wild animal, Steele is a domesticated dog, and I am a human, so I'm not down on their level. Besides, wolves are afraid of humans, so they would just run off unless you're a posing as a threat. Steele showed no aggression towards humans.

Well evil was a little too extreme of a word for those two, but your are accused of neither.
