I remember I made this sugestion before but it was well... discussed then ignored... I can't even remember where I wrote this for the first time, buut let's start again.
We can all see that Animation Source has a big problems with trolls last time. Guests are going through galleries and profiles posting rude comments and all we can do is report them. Almost all I always hear is "report them", but reporting is not a solution for me because we can easilly prevent those comments!
1. Unallow guests comments so trolls would have to register to make their comments, then...
2. Allow IP ban so people who are trolls will be banned for good, unable to do any more accounts.
See? That's pretty simple...

Yes, I completely agree. Not only do they troll, but they spam. But here is the downfall. I don't know if the trolls are related to the ones who have done so in the past. If that's the case, then banning may not work. Chances are they're using a *******. <---I did not swear. Since when is P.R.O.X.Y a bad word?

I agree, but this would be a bit of a problem.

Some members get on library computers. If we were to ban that IP, the troll may give up and go away,
but that doesn't mean someone else won't try to get on from that computer.
The chances of that are probably very rare, but even so. Could happen.

IP ban is banning account logged from a certain IP, so even if troll registered his account on library computer and get banned, other people who registered on other computers will be still able to log in. Is that what you meant?

I'm not sure about nowadays, but back when I was a mod, as recently as six months ago, IP bans were almost ALWAYS something we did when we banned someone. The problem, as Mighty said, is that the trolls use proxies, which means that they create false IP numbers artificially. We can into a second problem in mid-July or so, when we were banning trolls and their IP numbers, and it turned out they had created an IP identical to "regular", non-troll users; they have ways of knowing what any person's most-used IPs are.

I agree, more must be done to get rid of the trolls--but as for WHAT that might be, I haven't a clue. IP banning just won't work, and I speak from experience. Nice topic, though.

If that so, okay, but I'm still with disabling guests comments.

I'm all for disabling the comments.

I think a poll would be good for this topic.

I think for banning anyone there should be a username and IP ban. However, I still think people should be allowed to read the content on websites. Of course, this would be different for trolls – but my point is more towards changing the banning system.

I'll show you what I mean:
http://images.conay.co.uk/Screen%20Shot ... .18.08.png

As you can see there, it bans your username, IP, hostname and email. But it will still let you browse the content without letting you post.

As for banning trolls, I think it has to be done on a case by case basis; it is impossible to just 'stop' trolls. However, I think guest posting is really silly.
