I didn't see a topic like this, so sorry if there's one already, but an interesting question came to me last night.
Do animals, like us, have left- and right-handedness?
If anyone know for certain, just say it; meanwhile, feel frree to speculate.

I believe so. At least, I know chimpanzees and monkeys do. I remember I read somewhere that dogs and cats and other animals are 'handed' as well, but I forget where exactly I was reading it from.

How would you be able to tell which "hand" an non-primate animal "has" though? Would it have to do with something as trivial as which side it would lay on?

Well, primates use their hands. They are much like us in that sense. They use 'tools' such as sticks and rocks to get tasks done and in order to get food. Things like these which they do everyday, even swinging on vines like monkeys do, could be observed and seen to be handed, depending on which hand they use more often.

This topic is a few months old, but I do find it very interesting.
My dog's vet may not be right, but for dogs you can tell by what paw they give you more often. (My dog often gives me her right paw for shakes, so she may most likely be right handed. This can't be certain, of course.)

As for other animals, I'm not sure. Maybe some similar way. Such as for birds what hand they hold/pick up food/objects with more often.

Polar bears are all left handed. 8) so I would say so.
