...with the turnip and the sandpaper? That's one thing I've never clearly understood

A number of things.

One would be stuff the turnip in his mouth and sand sensitive parts of his body, the thing would stop him from screaming and when he would gasp in pain he'd choke on it but it won't get stuck.

Another would be sand skin and rub it with the turnip to make it sting.

Another would be nothing, the best toturers and interrgators didn't do a single thing, they'd scear them out and by showing something as mundain as them would make Kit think "What the hell is he doing?", a bit like Raiders of the Lost Ark when that Gastarpo agent and his coat hanger.

I'd bet the sandpaper was low grit stiff which is very rough and can do some nasty stuff too ones skin and if Karnage was going too use it he'd go for the tender spotes like the under arms, soles of feet and the private parts.

Well it's Disney we're talking about, so even if Karny hadn't been interrupted, I think that would have been the most likely solution
