Shadow
I walked around the herd making sure no one was getting into trouble with other herds or nobody was missing. Our arch nemassice was the River herd. We all hated them but they actually liked us. Our best friends were the land herd because e were closest to them and in the past, we helped them win wars with out of land horse herds that tried to control that part of the land. I smiled as I saw the Mountain herd and I saw Stoner. I looked around and galloped towards a lake that was near our herd. We soon wanted to control that Lake before any horse herd tried to claim it as their own. Diablo was playing with his 2 friends and he came trotting up. He said: Dad, are we ever going t conquer the River herd? I smiled and nudged his head saying: Sooner or later son.

Diablo
I trotted to the river and drank some water with my friends. One of them said: For real= would you rather go to the river herd and buck the lead stallion, or jump on a enemy horse. I said: Buck the lead stallion! I had to jump in the river and I trotted to the herd. I smiled and walked towards the lead stallion. I smiled and started to trot to him. I stood quickly on the side of his jaw and bucked him. I smiled and galloped out of there. The herd stallions started to chase me around and I galloped faster. One caught me but I bucked him too and bolted off back to the herd. They stopped at the lake and Nickered. I smiled and shook my butt teasing them, my friends laughing their heads off.

Stoner
I checked up on the herd of mares and watched out for the PERFECT lead stallion. My heart raced as I saw a stallion but I saw a birth mark, the River herd. Everyone hated them SO much. I nickered at him and a mare went with him, she giving me the evil eye. I looked at her with my eye squinted down and my eyebrow up. She trotted with her mate and I sighed. I looked after the herd of mares, no foals, no stallions. I saw my brother, Shadow, coming over to say hi. He said: Mom and Dad would be really proud. I smiled and said: Thanks, they would be proud of you too.

The taste of blood clouded my throat and made my breathing ragged. Sweat clung to my neck and legs, fire busted my stomach and ripped me in two. I let out a cry of agony as I ran, but my rider kept pushing me. Faster and faster, no mercy, I had to run faster. My legs buckled under me, I couldn't run any longer. Why couldn't he see? My heart burst out of my chest and pounded harder and harder with each stride that I took. His whip came down on my shoulder and split my skin in two. I screamed again, trying to pull back, but his whip came down again, harder this time. We were almost at the finish, but I couldn't do it. I wasn't strong enough. I was going to fade. A deep brown filly approached my rear and I flip a glance at her. There was no way she was winning, there was just no way. I strained against the bit, pushing harder, harder. My chest seemed to collapse under the heat. Dirt whipped up and stung my eyes, I couldn't see. Before I knew it, my rider was pulling on my bit. He was posting, that meant the race was over...It was over... It was over...

I blinked away from the memory of my racing days. Those painful years when I'd been forced to run under the direction that man had placed before me. I cringed at the remembrance of glory and competitiveness. The need to be faster, the craving for the sweet delicacy that was winning. I looked over my shoulder and saw the miles of dirt that stretched before me. This was my new home. A hawk glided overhead, coasting lazily on the hot air that drafted him up. Here, food was hard to come by, and water was scarce. But I could run for as long as I wanted. I could run and run and run and run forever. I looked at the members of my adopted herd and huffed. They treated me differently, as if I weren’t as tough as they were. Who were they to say that I could not handle the wild when they themselves had never been pushed to run more than an easy lope? Living wild, well, that was easy. Finding food, surviving, keeping an eye out for predators was much better than being forced to run in a circle. That dizzying course that’d drive most to a sickening madness. I scowled at the memory and huffed again, they’d never get it. But I was different. I had a bigger build than they. They were all short and stocky, mostly from over indulging on the tumble weeds and sticker bushes that grew in these lands. While I was tall, lean, well cut, in shape, not an ounce of fat could be found on my build. My legs were long, that was good for running. Yes, long legs were good. They were bad, all of them were bad. I snorted and began to run, this time on my own terms. This time, pushing myself when I saw fit. The river began to come into view and I pulled up. It seemed that the majority of the herds were at the river today. I grimaced at this fact then lowered my head to the fresh run off snow melt that made up this river. The water was crisp and cool and left a sweet taste in my mouth. A lot of gossip had been going on lately about the River Herd. Apparently no one liked them much. I, myself, never really cared. They all seemed to be nice enough horses, always polite. Sure they could be a little sharp tongued at times, but who wasn’t? I sighed, and then looked over to see a pretty Mountain Herd mare scanning the crowd of horses. She looked as though she were looking for a mate. I glowered at the thought of having a mate. To much work.

My heart raced as the many colts and fillies had their annual race of the month to see who was the fastest colt or filly in the herd. Diablo was entering and I watched him wave and smiled. Many people cheered for Delicate, a mean, bratty horse that always thought he was better than anyone in the land. Diablo was gonna make him think wrong and win this race. If he didn't win it, He would lose his honor of being with any friends. The horses yelled: GO! and the horses started off. Delicate was always first and Diablo caught up. Diablo was aside of him as he went faster, his heart beating, feet flying. I saw Delicate push Diablo and DIablo pushed him back. Diablo ran faster and his hooves picked up quickly. My heart was beating too and Diablo's heart was pounding really hard and he was going faster, faster. The more he thought about the fun of it, the faster he went. Delicate was going behind Diablo and by the time Diablo finished, the rest of the horses were racing Delicate in 2nd. It was a fair race and everyone cheered for Diablo. Diablo trotted away with me to get him cleaned up and throw him a celebration ceremony. The horses smiled a Diablo passed them. He went to the river and smiled drinking as much as he could.

I perked at the symphony of hooves pounding grass. I swung my head to see an annual race that the mustangs usually held. It was far slower than any race I’d ever been in, therefore I had been disqualified from the racing a few months back. The roar of the crowd gave me heartache to run. I wanted to be pushed again, to feel the wind snapping through my mane…I scanned the winner, a sturdily built colt with a giddy grin on his face. He was drinking water, obviously exhausted.

I trotted over to him and what I assumed to be his father and gave them a friendly smile. I was much taller than both of them. I sighed mentally, wishing to just fit in.
“You did wonderfully at the race.” I complimented him, and then looked at the black stallion next to him. He was the leader of the Grass herd. I gave him a warm smile then looked back at the colt.

I watched as Diablo picked up his head with a mouthful of water. My description of the bay thoroughbred was that he was pretty tall and he was very nice. I smiled and said: Hi, I'm Shadow, this is Diablo. Diablo swallowed the cold, mouthful of water and said: Thanks, I was finally able to compete in one. Not my best running but I did train all week for this. Next month it will be longer and have faster horses, so I will need to train harder. I smiled at him and trotted to a painted filly who was Diablo's best friends (One of the colts that were there when Diablo bucked the river herd's leader). I smiled at her and tilted my head down trotting away slowly. Leaf nipped Diablo and they started to chase each other about till one of them nipped the other.

I laughed as I caught up to Leaf and nip her close to her mane. She made a sharp turn and ran towards me. I looked at her come then I bolted off. Hoof beats were hitting the ground like lightning strikes and thunder bolts. I bolted off and Leaf did too, not close to me. She came beside me and tried to nip me but i slouched to the side quickly and she tried again, but last minute I bolt faster away and she just was in a cloud of dust. When Leaf came out, she was covered in dust. She smiled and bolted faster and harder toward me. I smiled and kept running off, the wind in my mane and tail, the open wind. My thoughts were: I <3 this life! Until, I ran into the river herd's leader again. I backed up a bit and when Leaf came and bit me, she froze. The leader said: I guess people do get pay back, huh?! I backed up more and bolted off. I saw the herd in a distance as I was right next to Leaf. We pushed harder and harder to get to our herd again and I bolted harder, faster. It was still about 5 miles away, knowing we wouldn't make it, But that race was 7. I smiled and grabbed Leaf and bolt harder, heart beats, hoof beats. I pushed harder and harder, fastest day of my life. I passed Shadow and the river herd now didn't care, they kept coming to get me. Shadow attacked the herd stallions to go back and the grass herd's stallions fought with the others. The leader said: Me you, fight. If you win, we leave and you take our land. If we win, you leave and we win your mares. Shadow said: Deal. They started to fight and right when they started, Shadow was about to pin the leader. Leaf looked at the leaders eyes and she saw only mean and evil. Shadow barley pinned him and trotted away. The river herd got out of the land which they called home and moved to a different location, with just a river. I smiled and trotted away with Leaf.

I was happy to have conversation, but he trotted away and I frowned. So much for that. I glowered, he’d only trained for a mere week? I trained my entire life for races, all day, everyday. And I was up for sale, always with a new owner. Some who ran me harder, some who were abusive. These mustang folk sure were soft. In the middle of my mental rant I noticed a fight taking place, and from the betting a mumbling that was whispered around me, I assumed the stakes were high. The Grass Herd leader won and the River Herd leader took his herd and moved his territory back. I felt a twist of pity for that herd, with fall approaching and food becoming scarcer, plus the added care of foals, they were going to have it tough this winter. I wanted to give the Grass herd leader a piece of my mind, but instead I just ran off in a wild flare of temper.

Shadow
I smiled and we finally reclaimed our land back, plus the land we have gotten. Now, the only thing standing in our way was Winter. As I felt some rain drops, more started to come like tears falling down a giant's eye as If they got their heart broken. I smiled at Diablo and he trotted with Leaf, pretending to own the land. I smiled and galloped around, seeing some Mountain herd mares trotting over. They looked around and tried to steal some of our foals. I shook my head and bolted to them. When they heard they heard the flashing of the wind blowing, they soon stormed off back to their herd, no foals with them. I scared them off and that was my goal, I saw the thoroughbred and just didn't make any face, a simple face. I trotted off to mothers of foals and nudged their foals, the mothers smiled and talked to me about some problems that they were happening with other herds.

I bit back a growl when the leader looked over. I didn't like him, but I didn't like anyone so it didn't matter. I bucked through my anger and started running, back to my land, or back to my herd's land.

I smiled at Leaf and we both raced across the land, the harder we trained the more chances we'd win. I laughed and coughed: BUG! Leaf smiled ad said: That's what you get for talking when your... B.U.G! We both laughed but avoided any passing flies.

I now actually had the desire to race again. It was in my blood, however wrong it was, racing was apart of me. I located Diablo and Leaf and ran next to them.
"Care for a friendly race?" I asked, running along side them easily.

I smiled and said: I race for the joy of it, not to get something out of it. Me to: Leaf said with a normal glare at the clear sky. I looked at him and said: But I would enjoy a friendly run!
