This is a short story about one of Leonhard Seppala's dogs who would become a rather well known mascot for a college in New England. His name was Sapsuk.
Sapsuk was born at Seppala's kennel in Nome on March 17, 1926. He was one of the 40 plus dogs who would go with Seppala on his nationwide tour later that year. In late January of 1927 Seppala and Elizabeth Ricker established a Siberian kennel at Poland Spring, Maine. In February, Dr. Carl Ell, the Vice-President of Northeastern University, went to the Seppala-Ricker kennel in search of a husky mascot for the school. Almost immediately, Dr. Ell set his eye on two young dogs. One of them was Sapsuk. At first, Seppala was reluctant to let either of these dogs go. Dr. Ell offered $100 for Sapsuk, and Seppala finally agreed to the sale.
Leonhard Seppala delivered Sapsuk to Northeastern University on March 5, 1927. The school renamed the dog King Husky. He would serve as their mascot until his death in 1941.
