The idea is to click reply, and write a story right there in the reply box. That means it has to be right off the top of your head, no planning, just write something. It can be any length you want, even just a couple lines. It can be a response to a previous post, or stand on its own. It just has to be off the cuff, and it has to be Balto fan fiction. Think of it as a writing exercise, where the idea is just to get something out rather than planning it.
"I don't know what to call this one," Balto said with a slight grin on his face. "The others all look like you, but she looks like me. What do you think?"
Jenna smiled back at him. "Well then she's going to need a special name. If she's anything like you, then she'll need a name that embraces your wild side. Something that celebrates it."
"Embraces our wild side, huh?" Balto chuckled.
Jenna frowned. "You know what I meant. You know I love that side of you, and if she's going to be like you I want her name to reflect that."
Balto stopped chuckling and looked down at the squealing pile of puppies near his front paws. "I... I like that idea," he said softly, and nudged the small brown puppy who had rolled over onto her back.
They watched as she slowly made her way back into the pile, gently squeaking the whole way.
"I've heard the humans talk about a very wild place, far off the coast of Alaska," Balto said, not taking his eyes off his daughter. "They said it's a chain of islands far out to sea, and sometimes there are earthquakes and the terrain is harsh but beautiful. Some of them even shoot fire into the sky now and then. It sounds almost unbelievable."
"Fire?" Jenna said, wide-eyed.
"Yeah. That's what they said, anyway. They're called the Aleutian Islands."
Jenna looked out the window. "Aleutian... that is a pretty name."
"Uh huh," Balto nodded.
"And it certainly seems to fit your wild side," she laughed. "Fire shooting out of the ground."
Balto grinned. "Yeah, I guess it does. Although I think Aleutian is a little bit strange sounding for a name. What about just Aleu?"
Jenna looked at Balto and smiled. "That's perfect. When she grows up, her name will always remind me of you."
Balto reached out to gently stroke the brown puppy's fur as she lay on top of the pile, fast asleep. "Sleep well, Aleu," he whispered.
