There doesn't seem to be any other topic in this forum that covers this particular subject, so I started a new one.
Page 248 of The Cruelest Miles book says that Togo and "another teammate" broke free from the team when Leonhard Seppala was on his way back to Nome after his relay in the serum run. However, the Nome Nugget paper reported that Togo and TWO of his teammates escaped in the vicinity of Golovin to go chase reindeer.
When Seppala and his team arrived back in Nome, a photo of the remaining team members was taken. That photo, and others related to the serum run, were developed and published in The Seattle Times paper for the first time a little more than five weeks later. It took that long for the photos to be transported from Nome to Seattle by a combination of dog team, train, ship and plane. These photos were later republished in some other big city newspapers around the country.
Seppala posted a notice about the missing dogs and offered a reward for Togo when he got back to Nome. The same page of The Cruelest Miles book indicates that Togo and the other dog eventually just "wandered back" to Seppala's kennel on their own. However, one local news report from the time said that Togo was returned to Seppala's kennel with the mail team about ten days after he and the other dogs had escaped. This report does not mention the names of the other two dogs or what happened to them. Another source gives the same account -- the only difference being that it says Togo was actually "leading the mail team" when he was brought back to Seppala's kennel.
