I know Jymn said that "all air pirates" are wolves/dogs...
But I still think he's wrong.

The most obvious is Hal, which really looks like a cat! His ears and nose just CAN'T be mistaken for a dog. It was even more obvious to me when I had to draw him.

I was also wondering about Mad Dog, which despite his name, also doesn't look like a dog...what would be your guess? to me he looks like a weasel, or maybe a rat...

Gibber? Hard to tell. We don't see his ears.

Dumptruck also has a cat-like tail. Is he a cat? That's possible. He reminds me a little of Pete, who is supposed to be a cat even though drawn like a dog nowadays.

And of course there's Don Karnage, who may be a wolf, but from his color, still look like a fox to me.

EDIT : On double check, no, Dumptruck's tail isn't really like a cat...

Hal really is the most obvious non-wolf pirate... there's not even a slight resemblance to a wolf there!

I've been pondering about the species of the air pirates as well. Usually it's rather easy to narrow down the species in Talespin, as far as I remember... but not in their case.

I do believe Karnage is a wolf, a brown one. He lacks some foxy traits, like the bushy cheekfur other animated foxes tend to have.

Perhaps the air pirates are hybrids. In some works, hybrids are outcasts, which would fit with the pirates, and explain their appearances, and our inability to define their species properly. Did you ever look at Ratchet's tail? It's like a lion's, but his head is clearly different. (in some comics he has a wolf tail, go figure)

I definitely think Mad Dog's a ferret. Which canine has got the wide loins? Only Mustelidae has gotta this feature. I also think Ratchet's a lion from Tsavo (just look at the similar example, Robin Hood's Prince John). These lions hasn't got the mane because of the undefined reasons. The first scientists think that's because of the high temperature in Tsavo, the another ones find this phenomenon in the high level of adrenaline in these animals' blood. Gibber, for me, is a little bulldog. I've gotta the video in Youtube. Here, in 3:30, Gibber's got little ears. ;) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c-OfFVEqbpE

I thought they were all wolves, although some air pirates does not look like one.
Although I must admit that my first impression was that everyone could be a kind of dog; but with Don Karnage was different, at first I thought he was a coyote or a dingo or something similar.

I don't think they are all wolves. Then again they're cartoony so it's difficult to say.
