How Did Steele get ahead?

When Steele feel off a cliff, we were all hoping he'd DIE! Right? NO! Because it wouldn't be fun to see Balto quickly and without any trouble, get back to town.

Steele climbed back up the cliff just as Balto and the rest of the sled team were heading back down the other side of the mountain to get to town. Balto was already ahead of Steele by a long shot, so how did steel suddenly get ahead of Balto and mess up Balto's trail-marking system by making his own marks to thrown the team off course. I understand the rest of how Steele got to town; while Balto was running around in circles it bought Steele a LOT of time to get to town and tell everyone the BS about what happen with Balto and the rest of the group and medicine. But how did steele get ahead the first time around?

I wondered that myself once. I just assumed that not pulling a sled and team behind him, he was able to move faster and went a bit around Balto and the others and got ahead before messing up the trail. Rest is history.

That and the sled team had to move along a set path, Steele wasn't hindered and could run straight through the forest and get ahead of them. In other words, he took a short cut they couldn't take.

I know this question is a "shot-in-the-dark" and it might be a little ridiculous, and there is NO official answer to the question, but the only natural guess i could make is that Steele took a short cut through places that a 10 foot sled with a bunch of dogs couldn't get through and somehow got ahead.

I think how Steele got ahead was that he didn't have to carry a bunch of weight on his back so that made him go faster.

Oh wow, I never thought about that before. I suppose anything could have happened, or it just wasn't put into thought when making the film. I like the ideas posted her about what could have been the reason why.

well i don't know because when they were on the cliff (before balto rescued them) they didn't know where they were or how to get out
