I love the original Planet of the Apes movies and television series. As dated as they may seem to most of you, the makeup and prosthetics of the time won many awards. And the movies and even the television series had some very good story lines. Most of those were apocalyptic and dark, but there were some positive stories as well. I happen to own a copy of Battle For The Planet Of The Apes ( http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0069768), which is one of the more positive story lines of the original movies (and has some great acting in it). I also own a complete series DVD set of the original Planet of the Apes television series ( http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0071033) which, as I said, is pretty awesome. There was also a cartoon series in the 70s, which was actually pretty lame, with horrible animation. There were some things I liked about the 2001 movie ( Planet of the Apes - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0133152, which I believe is supposed to be a reimagining of the original Planet of the Apes movie with Charleton Heston - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0063442). I did like how chimpanzees were shown to be the aggressive species, rather more so than the gorillas...more in keeping with their real-world counterparts. In the original movies and television series, it was the opposite (entirely)--chimpanzees were the peaceful and scientifically-minded apes, and gorillas were an aggressive, prejudiced soldier class in ape society. Other than that, I really didn't enjoy that movie all that much. As to Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes ( http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1318514), I have not seen it yet, but I do really want to. I have high hopes for it, but being a fan of the original movies and television series, I have concerns that it will be like so many movies now...all about effects with little story to back it up. Or a completely different story that is not as good. This movie appears to be a reimagining of the original movie Conquest Of The Planet Of The Apes ( http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0068408), a DARK movie. A highlight of the original series was the late British actor Roddy McDowall ( http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001522). He was incredible in the three roles he played between the movies and the television series (each being chimpanzees): Cornelius, Caesar, and Galen. He had worked out mannerisms, vocal peculiarities, etc...which made him very believable as an evolved, humanoid ape. And I believe it was his contributions which made the series as enduring and popular as it was and still is. More than any other actor in the original movies or television series. If you haven't seen the originals, you should try and watch! They are that good!

I went to see the movie in theaters, and I must say there are pros and cons.
Pros- ~ Storyline was VERY well structured; it wasn't just bing, bang, boom, one event after another. Events from the beginning affected the end, some things from towards the beginning were just realized and/or were paid mind to towards the middle, and so on. The plot and events surrounding it stayed true to the backbone and that was very well appreciated I'm sure ^^ ~ It was believable. Even the parts where normally I would laugh and want my money back had me intrigued and on the edge of my seat! ~ The body language of the apes was pretty good and like something you'd see on real apes. ~ The characters stuck to their personalities, yet grew through the story.
Cons- ~ The ending left more to be desired, to be honest, and I wished they showed more of the other apes evolving instead of just Caesar. ~ Caesar's sudden turn to the dark side was a bit abrupt, and yet it was being hinted at earlier, it seemed a little sudden when it happened.
It's kinda hard to review this movie a week or two after you saw it (I went on a vacation right after xD ) but this is most of what I remember thinking through the movie. Basically just my opinion, if anyone cares.
