If I remember correctly, the real Balto was named after a guy called Samuel Balto, and the cartoon character's name is Balto because the real one's name was Balto. How he got that name, in the movie's timeline, I don't know. Since the humans call him Balto as well, perhaps they just did and then the dogs caught on with that (or perhaps the people who made the movie just decided that it would be simpler if everyone called him Balto).

But it's possible that Aniu or Boris could have come up with it, as well. Most likely Aniu, because if she died before he was old enough to know his own name, he probably wouldn't have survived. :/

How about editing out the unnecessary and flammable statement quoted above? That was uncalled-for, and already will likely send this topic into problems unless the mods put a stop to it right off.


Very well considered, Nattikat! And quite true about the real Balto. He was named by Leonhard Seppala for Samuel Johanessen Balto, a "Sami" reindeer herder and fisherman from Norway. He was hired on by the famous Norwegian explorer Fritjof ("frit-yohf") Nansen for his 1888 Greenland Expedition. "Balto" was a fairly common surname among the Sami peoples of Scandinavia.

As to your speculations about how the fictional Balto got his name, I don't think I can add anything more to what you said. At the moment anyway. Clearly Rosy, the young girl, knew his name. She couldn't have known it if Aniu gave him the name, so it is possible that he was named by the humans of the town (perhaps even by Rosy herself), and Aniu, in spirit form, just came to accept that.

But again, this is one of those many questions, asked by Lakota WolfDog, which has no official answer. And dude, before you go presuming that is a flame bait, it is NOT. I am just saying that you do tend to ask a lot of questions for which neither Universal Studios nor Amblimation gave any official explanation in the course of the three Balto movies.

We've explained that. He accompanied a very famous Norwegian explorer on a trip to and across Greenland. To other Norwegians, like Leonhard Seppala, that was a worthy accomplishment.
