PLOT:

The School creates hybrid species of one creature mixed with another. Their most famous creations are the Maximum Ride Flock... but believe me, there were so many more.

A group of genetically-altered children (shark/human hybrid, cheetah/human hybrid, bat/human hybrid, and electric-eel/human hybrid) finally manage to escape from the hell known as the School. But how will they survive in the world when they're so different? ...and when they're so hunted?

My charries:

Name: Malk
Gender: Male
Age: 16
Species: Shark/Human
Description: Thin and tall, sideswept brown hair (likes to spike it up sometimes), blue eyes, wears black jackets with high collars to hide his gills, and... I guess that's it.
Animal Attributes: Double-row of sharp teeth (second row is retractable, so he can hide his mutant-ness when he's around other people), has sharp, small fins on his wrists and shoulderblades. He also has gills and webbed feet (yes, weird, I know).
Personality: Reserved to people he doesn't know, protective of his friends, tough, can be hot-headed at times but can also be charming when he wants to. Sometimes he'll hurt people without knowing it, and that's one thing he hates about himself.
Other Mutations: He can swim at super-fast speeds, communicate with other sharks and fish, breathe underwater, and has quick reflexes.
Relations: In love with Liera.
Other: He wears a short, beach shell necklace that belonged to his sister before she died at the School.

Name: Coby
Gender: Male
Age: 14
Species: Bat/Human
Description: Even taller and skinnier than Malk (Coby is, like, unhealthily skinny), pale skin, white eyes (no irises or pupils, like bats), jet-black hair.
Animal Attributes: Has echo-location sonar, bat wings, is blind, and can see the shapes of things with his sonar.
Personality: Quick-witted, skittish, may or may not have some mental issues with paranoia, but he feels completely comfortable around his friends while he's uncomfortable around other people, doesn't like crowds.
Other Mutations: Has limited telepathic ability, where he can send thoughts fine but not receive them very clearly, and sometimes he picks up stray sonar signals from underground, his surroundings, and even from airplanes and radio waves.
Relations: Thinks of the group like a family, but nothing more than that.
Other: Wears shades in public so he won't freak people out with his white eyes.

Name: Mara
Gender: Female
Age: 14
Species: Human/Cheetah
Description: She has amber eyes, and a few freckles dotting her face. She is tall and just a bit skinnier than normal. Her hair is a golden brown, with a few darker streaks in it.
Animal Attributes: Along with a few freckles, she has spots down her arms, legs, and spine. She does have a tail, and small cat-ears on her head.
Personality: She can be fairly impatient at times, and is incredibly curious. She always has to be doing something to keep her hands - or tail - busy and moving. She adapts easily to change, and is loyal, if a bit wary around strangers.
Other Mutations: She can run a lot faster than normal, and does have increased strength and endurance. Her eye sight and sense of smell are heightened as well. She has amazing reflexes and coordination.
Relations: None
Other: Is mute, due to some problem with her throat when it formed. She can sometimes make small mews or growls, but other than that, nothing.


Name: Leira
Gender: Female
Age: 15
Species: Electric Eel/Human
Description: She has dark hair that is curly and often messy. Her eyes a clear, pale blue. She is around average in height and weight.
Animal Attributes: She can breathe in water through the pores on her neck, and does have a flexible fin running down from the back of her neck to her tailbone.
Personality: She can be loving and gentle, but once she's mad...watch out. She has a sharp tongue and a fiery temper when aggravated. Despite this, she is really a good person at heart. She is curious and incredibly loyal, as well as stubborn.
Other Mutations: She can breathe underwater, and does have heightened endurance, speed, and strength, though not as much as Mara. She can sometimes summon electricity if she tries hard enough, or is scared, angry, etc.
Relations: She's in love with Malk.
Other: None

Ooh, since Mara is mute, and Coby can lightly receive telepathic thoughts, would it be possible if he sort of talks for her? Just an idea I had while reading her bio, but if you don't like it, it's fine ^^

The rush of the waves at in the morning had to be the most exhilarating thing Malk had ever experienced in his life. Every morning, instead of just taking a boring shower, he swam in the lake (don't worry, he wore trunks) near the house that belonged to him and his family. Well, not his literal family, but kids like him who had known each other since they escaped from the place they were created... the School. The School built mutants like them, with different kinds of DNA programmed into each organism so they'll grow superior to a purebred human. Malk was half-shark, half-human. That explains the love of the water. He could swim at speeds just as fast as a blacktip shark, which was his other half. He possessed gills and sorts of fins, along with a retractable double-row of shark teeth and webbed toes. Malk bolted through the water, past a school of freshwater guppies and finally breached, wiping the water out of his face and pushing his brown hair back. He had just recently turned 16, making him the oldest out of his family. The next oldest was Liera, and just the thought of her was the only thing in the world that made Malk weak at the knees. He had loved her since they first met, back at the School, and she was an electric-eel/human.

His gills gasped one more time before closing up, becoming slits on the sides of his neck. He slowly made his way to the shore, grabbing a towel he had left there, and dried off his face before stepping out of the water, then slinging the towel over his shoulder.

Liera usually took morning swims. She tried to do it after Malk; her electric residue could sometimes enter the lake. She knew he wouldn't enjoy getting shocked first thing in the morning. She did catch a glimpse of him before he exited the water. She must've gotten up earlier than normal. She surfaced, her hair plastered against her head. Her webbed feet kicked strongly as she propelled herself to the shore.

"Morning, Malk," she said as she slid out of the water. She squeezed her hair to get the water out of it. She pulled on a cover-up over her swimsuit, a small smile forming on her face.


Mara's ears twitched as she woke up, her amber eyes fuzzy with sleep. Leira's bed was empty, which meant Malk was sure to be up by now too. She stood, stretching her strong muscles. Her tail twitched; if she ever had to go in public, her tail would wrap around her leg. With long pants, it wasn't noticable. A hat was also necessary, due to her cat ears, but she appeared fairly human otherwise.

She slid out of bed, and padded lightly out of the room. She wasn't positive, but it didn't seem like Coby was up; he normally would've touched her mind by now. With his telepathic abilities, he could somewhat communicate with her. He was the only one who could. She opened his door gently, ready to wake him up if he wasn't already awake.

Coby's pure-white eyes shot open as soon as he sensed the presence of someone in the room. He rolled over and sat up, ready to face whoever it was, but when he figured out who it was, his muscles relaxed. Even though he was blind, his bat DNA allowed him to see using echo-location sonar. He recognized the shape of Mara's body as she gingerly pushed open his door. He smiled, relieved of his paranoia for the time being. "Good morning, Mara." he greeted as he stretched his arms out, along with his webbed bat wings that touched the walls of his room. I must have overslept. he said through his mind to hers. He had slight telepathic abilities, making him the only one able to freely communicate with Mara. Are Malk and Liera up? he asked through his mind again, exercising his telepathy so he wouldn't get a headache later on from not using it.

Malk spun around, grinning crookedly, just like he always did when he saw her. "Hey," he answered, "I didn't know you were up yet." He stopped walking to wait for her to catch up, wiping off drips of water that ran from his hair to his face with the corner of the towel.

Mara nodded. Yes, I think so, she replied silently. It's still pretty early. ...Want some breakfast? she asked. Her own stomach rumbled at the thought of food.


Leira's smile widened as she caught up with him. "Guess I woke up a bit early today," she replied, toweling her hair dry.

Coby smiled at her, feeling his own stomach grumble too. Sure, let's go. he answered, getting out of bed, still in his PJ's, which were a plain white T-shirt and pajama pants with random cartoon characters on them. He couldn't see which ones they were, but by descriptions he could try and guess. He loved listening to cartoons in his spare time on TV anyway, even if he didn't know what anything looked like. He was born blind, because unwanted bat DNA found it's way back into his embryo, and since bats were blind... But it was never all bad. He never judged a person by their looks, even though he could sense the general shape of their bodies and faces with sonar. Coby made his way to the door where Mara stood, being careful not to trip on a stray object. He always felt as though he and Mara were the closest, because they were the only ones who fully understood each other. They were both disabled, and they practiced speaking through their minds on a daily basis, so it almost seemed a natural connection.

Malk kept his eyes locked on Liera as she came up next to him. She had to be one of the prettiest girls in the world to him, even though he would never admit it to Coby or Mara. He smiled a smile that he only reserved for her as he asked, "Feeling hungry yet?" It felt good to relax in Liera's presence, since he was always busy being the oldest and tough protector of the family.

"I little bit," she said, with a small shrug. Liera was probably the only one who needed a "normal" amount of calories. While the amount os swimming she did meant she was a bit hungrier, she didn't need to eat like Mara did.


Mara nodded, then remembered Coby was blind. Though she probably knew him better than Liera or Malk, she still had mental lapses occasionally. Due to his sonar, he could navigate fairly well, and it was easy to forget. She headed down the stairs, knowing he would follow. Heading to the kitchen, she opened the fridge. She quickly picked out a pack of bacon, a dozen or so eggs, and milk. A loaf of bread and a box of cereal came from the pantry.

While not a fabulous cook, she wasn't horrible either. At least she didn't burn stuff. Mara soon set about making breakfast, scrambling the eggs and frying the bacon. Could you make some toast? she asked Coby. Her hands were full at the moment.

Malk slid his arm over Liera's shoulders and pulled her closer. Not trying to be flirty, but just because he liked her closeness. "Coby and Mara should be up by now." he figured, making his way to the back door.

Coby nodded and found his way to the fridge with ease, as it didn't take much effort to sense such a large object in the corner of the kitchen. He opened it, leaning down to "see" what was inside. He sensed the shapes of an egg carton, a milk jug, some other various packaged foods, and... aha! He reached his long, skinny arm into the fridge and brought out a loaf of bread. Closing the fridge, he opened up the plastic that contained the bread, then looked around to sense the shape of the toaster. His arms holding the bread slices were always very skinny; he didn't eat as much as he should. His paranoia would get the best of him; thanks to the School. They would feed him plates of an experimental substance to see if he would die of eating it or not (since he was born blind, they had dubbed him a failed experiment that would be used for substance experiments instead). Also, when he flew with his bat wings, it burned off any bit of fat he may have had on his body anyway. Coby popped the slices into the toaster and pushed the handle down, unable to tell if the knob was on the right setting. He wasn't superman, ya know.

Mara glanced at the toaster, and turned away for a brief instant to adjust the knob. It was going to be burned one that setting, and she hated her toast burnt.

Liera nodded. She could faintly smell bacon, just because the kitchen window was fairly close to them here. "Mara's probably making breakfast," she said, pointing out the mouth-watering smell. Her stomach rumbling, she hurried inside.

Malk followed Liera inside, and whattayaknow, breakfast was underway. "Smells good, guys." Malk said with a quick nod and straight face. "Well, he said, hurrying upstairs to his room, "I'm going to get changed." He was still in his swimming trunks with just a towel slung over his shoulder, so he quickly made his way into his room and threw on a black shirt, jeans and black jacket. His jacket collars were always big enough to hide his gills, for when they ran out of food and needed to go shopping in public.

Coby took a seat in a random chair he found and ran his fingers through his straight, jet-black hair. "How was your swim this morning, Liera?" he asked, trying to keep any awkward silence at bay. He had never been exceptionally close to Liera, so even though they considered each other sister and brother, just like the whole family was, it was never truly comfortable when Coby was alone with her for long periods of time.

Liera, her mouth open to reply, was interrupted by the sound of shattering glass. Eyes wide and heart pounding, she whirled around.

Mara let out a small mew of shock, her ears flattening back against her haid and her tail lashing furiously. Erasers! Adrenaline coursed through her, and painful, shattered memories flooded her mind. Her retractable claws slid out on instinct, her throat attempted to make a hiss. She made a small sound, then threw herself at the wolf-human hybrids.

Liera, with her limited strength (in comparison to Mara's), was left only one choice. She allowed fear to flood her thoughts, and she felt the familiar tingle run through her skin. Electricity made the air crackle around her, and she quickly hit an Eraser that attempted to attack her. While not enough to kill, it was certainly a significant amount. A small sizzle, and the Eraser fell back, shocked.

Malk, after coming downstairs in full dress, didn't take a single breath before he whirled around and bared his double-row of razored shark teeth at the attackers. The fins on his wrists elongated and ripped through his sleeves, so he slashed a dark-colored Eraser across the face with them, then sunk his teeth into where the shoulder meets the neck. The Eraser howled in pain and ripped Malk off, leaving a gaping wound on the spot.

Coby sensed the Erasers coming up behind him, so he whipped out his bat wings, knocking them both in the nose. Then he jumped up onto the table and kicked his chair at them on the way up, then lunging at them headfirst, aiming for the stomach. "Where did these come from?!" Coby shouted after knocking the wind out of the Eraser.
