Mk, this may not seem like much of a rant, but everytime this happens I get annoyed as hell.
Alrighty now here's the thing.

Avatars are supposed to be 150 x 150 pixels. Mk, sounds fine. That's a good size. Now there's ALSO a rule it has to be 24 KB. I was dealing with this for an extremely long time with annoyance, but I just got through it. Now I've decided I've had about enough. So I have a simple question. How come we have to make the avatars less than 24 KB? And btw, no it can't be 24.0 KB it has to be 23.8 or something like that. =/

I'm very annoyed at this because the site only accepts a few file types and even the signatures don't need to be a certain file size. My current avatar was made with the brush tool and when I saved it as 150 x 130 in .png it was 41.2 Kb or something like that. Guess what? I ended up resizing and resizing until you couldn't even really see the image anymore and cropping and cropping until I had had about enough. I just saved it as a gif file which messes up the edges entirely if you have a transparent or soft edged image. It's very, very annoying that every time I want to have an avatar with soft edges and transparent that I end up having to make it so small you can't even see it, or so rough at the edges that it makes it look messy and sloppy like I took no time on it oncesoever.

I know I'm not the only one to have this problem, I know that for sure.
I have a simple suggestion, though. If you have to have some kind of file size maximum, can't you make it up to 50 KB? Since I know almost every avatar I make in .png and 150 x 150 or lower is always 40, 45, or something lower than 50. Couldn't that be done?

I HATE 24 KB! I really do! It gets on my nerves...I wish it could be like 50 KB or something.

Yes, this is annoying, but I avoid the problem by uploading my avatar through an image uploading site(take your pick, form image shack, tinypic, photobucket), then copying the link and pasting it into the little bar that says "link from URL/website". Then I upload.

Simple, and it avoids the problem, though it is rather annoying, this 24 KB thing.

Question&Magic: Yes VERY annoying. I've began to just get annoyed every single time I make an avatar.

This sometimes happens to me, but when it does, I just go to http://www.Iaza.com and change the file size there. Let's say this is my avatar: http://iaza.com/work/110117C/iaza12362884248000.png The file size is 102kb. Obviously it's too big, so size it down. "reduce pixels." (Note: Don't use the reduce file size option with transparent PNG images. It will turn them into horrid looking jpegs like so http://www.iaza.com/work/110117C/iaza12362813669300.jpg) I'll put it down to 150x150. This took my PNG image down to exactly 24kb. If that doesn't work, change the file type to .gif or.jpeg. I recommend that you save the image from Iaza, as they only host the image for about 90 days.

Edit: MHP's trick does work, I've done that in the past, and with the method above. That or use a different size. Like 100x100. They're still fairly big. Mine currently 102x92px. 10.3kb. You can still tell what it is.

Other than that I see nothing wrong with the 24kb limit.

But if you read my first post, it says I mostly have trouble with transparent soft edged files. Gif makes them very badly cut on the edges and if iaza doesn't work with png transparents, that wouldn't work either. And as for MHP's idea, I tried it out but it didn't work for me. I never does work for me, for some reason. I appreciate the attempt to help, though.

NYBaltoFan: Yeah, I have photoshop too and even with that I can't get it to a size where I can actually see the details of the drawing and have it 24 KB at the same time. And you're right. Others who don't have photoshop probably have an even tougher time.

Even if some people are still browsing the site on dial up, they can handle something like 50KB or 100KB. 24 is just ridiculous for some of the less tech-savvy members to try and get their avatars to shrink to.

I wouldn't have a clue how to do that xD But then again, I'm no graphics artist.

I'm all out for 50kb, I have nothing against it, I just never really had this problem.

I think we should go for 640kb
