Being a diehard fan of Mario since Super Mario 64, Super Mario Galaxy has put Mario up to the stars.
Unlike a lot of the adventure Mario games, you dont take in a lot of damage or immediately die when you fall. Actually, gravity will catch you. However, that does not mean you are life lost free. On some parts of the courses, you can fall down into the core. You are given 5 lives to start on both games.
In SMG1, you meet a beautiful character watcher of the galaxies, Rosalina. With her are individual yellow or pink flying globs called lumas. They snack on various falling bits of stars called "star bits". Mario must collect 78 stars to complete the journey and come down to a showdown with Bowser to rescue Peach. Luigi and the Toads are here too!
In SMG2, you do the same related thing like above but here, there are some differences. Yoshi joins as your companion in most of the missions. Rosalina isnt here but the Toads are, as well as the lumas. Mario has his own starship, forget the exact name at the moment.
They are probably some of the best Mario games I ever played.

As long as the topic follows the rules, it shouldn't be locked. And besides, this seems to be the only recent Super Mario Galaxy topic, so you have nothing to worry about at the moment.
Now, where do I begin with these games?
That's such a tough question to answer. XD I love both of these games to death, and played them both to 100% completion.
As expected, Super Mario Galaxy was just a super hit. Being a flag-ship, AAA Title from Nintendo, it's to be expected... I guess I like this game for the very same reason everyone else likes it: it's a new idea brought into a genre of games that are quickly dieing out: space and gravity! And it's ~beautiful~. But I think the biggest thing that really kept me alive was the mostly orchestrated music that it played. By god, it epic! Shortly after beating the game and getting enough money, I imported the soundtrack from Japan.
Really, the only thing I have to hammer against Super Mario Galaxy 1 is its difficulty. It was very easy until the very later half of the stars... by which time you'd have enough stars to beat Bowser for the final time. The difficulty did appear earlier with the second play-though after getting all the stars from the first play-through... it still felt lacking since most of those second-play stars are the same group from the first.
Now, Super Mario Galaxy 2 is quite a different story for me. Sequels are tough for developers, but Nintendo managed to make a sequel right.
Right here and now... copy-paste what I liked about Super Mario Galaxy 1 here... I think they managed to fix what I had problems with from the first game: The difficulty sprang up early; I noticed that even early in the game, you could easily select from stars that were more or less difficult. The cool thing about difficulty being present early in the game and ramp up all the way to the end is that taking down Bowser for the final time just that much victorious.
Now, and to my surprise, the difficulty didn't stop going up after beating the final boss and collecting all of the 'normal' stars. Oh no... Those bloody "Cosmic Jewels" green stars are a huge pain in the butt... and I wouldn't mind doing that again. XD But the most hair ripping thing about the game was the very last star "Grand Master's Challenge" or something. XD
But I swear, the HUGE difficulty spike makes completing the game just THAT much more epic!
I do apologize if my thought are disorganized. There's just so much I can say about these two games! XD
