Spirit Day is an event to honour teens who lost their lives to anti-LGBT ( L*sbian (why the hell is this word censored??), Gay, Bisexual, Transgendered) bullying, which is bullying someone for their age, sexual oritentation (particuarly), physical ability, ethnicity, race, or profession. It really sickens me that people are still being bullied for these reasons, especially when it's things they simply can't help (i.e. race, sexual orientation, age), and the fact they they commit suicide because of such horrendous bullying is just.. awful. Lots of people have been wearing purple for this day, and even the admins at deviantART have made the site purple to honour those poor kids. Will it ever stop? If this offends/disgusts/bothers you - it means your part of the reason why these kids need our help & support.

I agree, in this day and age, there needs to be more tolerance practiced, rather then preached.

I still find the fact it's mostly LGBT slightly annoying, it's not just LGBT people who get bullied so severely they commit suicide but I do support Spirit Day.
Though once finding out it is indeed all people who are/were bullied I felt a bit better. (Bullying is a sore spot for me, I've been bullied virtually all my life and I'm completely straight - I was bullied simply because I am.)
Either way; I support Spirit Day. Proudly wearing purple.

tibb_wolf wrote: It's 2010 and I really think its horrible people are still being bullied over trivial things such as that. :[ I don't mind at all that the major "spot light" (for lack of a better term) of Spirit Day had to do with anti-LGBT bullying because that is right up there with racism. And it needs to stop - not just anti-LGBT bullying, but all types.
I know very well that this can be a sensitive topic to talk about, but these kids didn't deserve to be bullied to the point where their only escape was suicide - especially for just being who they were born to be. I would say more, but alas, on the forums here I cannot. >_> I couldn't agree more with everything you said, Tibb. It really is right up there with racism, and it needs to be stopped. Thanks for your support. <3

Although I didn't wear purple on the 20th (I didn't even know Spirit Day was on). BUT, that most certainly does not mean I don't support Spirit Day. I see bullying everyday, whether it's in real life or online it happens, no matter what type of bullying; it happens, and I can't stand it. I have to agree with Tibby, making homophobic comments is just as bad as making racist ones, you can't change what you are, and what sickens me is that there is quite a strong homophobic pack on this site.
My thoughts go out to anyone who has been bullied because of their preferences, and especially the ones who have been so severely bullied that they have resorted to suicide or other types of self-harm.

I saw no point in wearing purple. Firstly, because it seemed that this so-called "SPIRIT Day", especially in the repeated and VERY annoyingly-repeated event invites I received, seemed keyed to encouraging people to wear purple in support ONLY of LGBT bullying. And those Facebook invites would not go away no matter how many times I deleted them or said "no" to them (not until I finally and repeatedly reported the Facebook page in question which I kept getting spammed with; such repeat spamming tactic only guaranteeing that I wanted nothing to do with the freaking event or what it was promoting). Secondly, because a day devoted to bringing attention to bullying has not, and likely WILL not, have any real or lasting impact upon bullying. Bullying is so ingrained in children, that even proactive steps that some few schools take to actually punish bullies only have LIMITED and short-term effect. Even if they succeed at scaring a particular bully into not repeating the behavior (which is the only response which works...they need to fear the consequences of their actions...especially since bullies themselves depend on the creation of fear and intimidation to support their bullying). I recently heard of a New Jersey school which made a ten-year old bully follow the janitor around and pick up trash and also scrub toilets (as an "in-school" suspension). On a talk radio station that was talking about it, almost every adult totally agreed with that sort of punishment...even those who were parents. Only the parents of the bully, and a few crybaby liberals, protested the idea. Bullies will always exist no matter the steps taken. And no bully is going to give a hoot about a "SPIRIT Day", or suddenly have an epiphany about how terrible bullying is simply because a bunch of people go around wearing purple and posting on the internet. Thirdly, I am offended that "SPIRIT Day" very surreptitiously focused, as the stuff floating around the internet clearly showed, only on the recent (and very unfortunate) attacks on gay kids. Nothing was said, that I ever saw (and I saw a lot of it whether I wanted to or not), about the straight kids, the kids of other races or nationalities, or even those who were physically or mentally handicapped. No...attention was ONLY given to the cases involving gay kids. (And don't you over-sensitive ding-dongs go accusing me of being a homophobe. I already made it clear that the bullying attacks on the gay teens were unfortunate. I am certainly not glad that they happened.) Bullying has normal and abnormal aspects to it. The normal part, whether or not we want to come to terms with it, is the tendency of kids to want to sort out a pecking order (which is natural and instinctive in our species and most others on this planet). The ABnormal aspects of it include parents who are either indifferent to their kids being bullies (or refusing to own up to it and face the music), or who actually ENCOURAGE that sort of behavior with how they act in their home (towards other family members). There are plenty of meatheads in this world, and most of them have bullies for kids. There are also kids who have very poor social skills, who simply use bullying as a way of dominating other kids or because they have no better or more intelligent way of resolving conflict. Not that that makes it right.

I'd love to have a serious conversation about this bullying issue (which is a real problem) but why is this sentence necessary? Stop taking shots at 9/11 please so can have an open minded conversation like adults. It certainly wasn't necessary, and deserves to be reported. Unfortunately, this demonstrates that a serious conversation cannot be had with a person who carries such a chip on her shoulder. The post-script is enflammatory, it's immature, and it's petty. And it has been reported. Ugh.

I have LGBT friends and I wholly support them and think bullying someone because of that is stupid but it really got to me that it seemed people only cared about the gay kids being bullied. :/ It still does too. I know it's actually gearing towards all bullying but the impression it gave off has ended up in most people believing it's anti - LGBT bullying only and frankly that's a rather close-minded view.
