Well this was a story that I've been thinking about lately and here is the plot so far.
Set in the year 1995 in the Antarctic Ronne Ice Shelf region. A chartered airline was wrapping up an aerial tour of the region with scientists and tourists checking out the mysterious continent when all of the sudden the plane starts having multiple mechanical failures and goes down.
all passengers survive but a handful are severely injured and may not make it. No helicopters or snowmobiles cannot make it through due to the harsh winter temperatures and massive blizzards.
Appointed by the U.S government and other charities Balto, the rest of the crew and other dogs from around the Americas come in Aid of the passengers and crew but can Balto make it before the passengers perish from the Antarctic winter?
I'll be posting the first chapter soon. I hope you guys like the plot

Heres the first chapter. I will be working on the second chapter ASAP. Hope you guys like the intro
Chapter 1: Big Bird Down
June 16, 1995 - 7:58pm
Somewhere over Antarctica
In the quiet, dark frigid landscape of central Antarctica was no movement of life in the barren snow-filled tundra leaving the only sounds of high speed winds whipping through accompanied with an incoming blizzard from west bringing misery and darkness to the lonely continent in which would bring visibility to almost zero creating the perfect storm for which no form of life would dare trek it in this challenging weather. Over the skies however, was a roaring sound of an aircraft flying over, an airliner of some sorts leaving the desolate continent for now.
The aircraft was a MD-11, a trijet which belonged to World Airways, a luxury charter airliner that permits any company to lease its planes for personal use from transporting sports teams to corporate executives in a hurry. What’s different about this specific flight was it was leased by the Australian Antarctic Division or AAD for scientific purposes joined with the Argentine/Chilean government for scientific research as well along with a Swiss flying tour company...well let’s just say a lot of people got involved with this special flight.
World Airways Flight 609 was finishing up an aerial tour of the South Pole, the Ronne Ice Shelf located next to the Antarctic Peninsula and the infamous Ross Island on the western side of the continent where an earlier flight from New Zealand almost 20 years ago went down.
The Flight, in the air for more than 4 hours, was headed back to Ushuaia, the most southern city in the world, located in the tip of Tierra del Fuego in Argentina. Which is where the temporary base for the AAD and the government research headquarters are located due to the proximity of the city from Antarctica.
World Airways makes its final turn inside the thick clouds and starts to descend to its designated altitude and heading back to Ushuaia. Outside the only thing that makes it an airplane is its roaring engines with the silhouette of its blinking strobe lights on its body and its green/red lights blinking a little slower accompanied by its lit windows of passengers either looking out or minding their business.
In the flight deck is Arturo Rubirosa, the captain of the plane, makes his landing preparations ready and beings to communicate with his first officer, Christian Quito. Both have served in the Argentine Air Force but Arturo, a man of 65 years with a large build and big girth with gray hair forming waves to the back of his head, has flown over the Antarctic skies in training missions for more than 20 years which makes him very familiar with the surrounding area.
Quito, a man in his early 30’s with brown hair and blue eyes with a scrawny build, is the first officer of the plane. He had recently left the air force after 10 years to become an airline pilot. On this June evening they are encountering a blizzard heading from the west and must get out of there quickly or else heavy turbulence and icing will cause serious problems. Arturo starts to radio in the airport tower, located 2 hours away from them giving his position.
"Ushuaia tower this is flight 609 come in over" Arturo answered.
"609, this is Ushuaia tower please state your altitude and speed at this moment?" questioning Arturo.
"Altitude is about 31,000 feet, speed around 535 miles per hour"
"Descend and maintain 12,000 and radio in when you are about one hour and fifteen minutes from the airport over."
Arturo turns to Quito who starts going over with him the landing procedures.
"Bueno Quito, looks like this was another enjoyable flight over the Antarctic. Anyway do you know what you have to do?"
Christian turns away and looks at his check board and starts going over the routine.
"descend to altitude 120 and reduce speed to 380 mph."
"Good" Arturo states. "Remember to radio in when we are about an hour away from the airport and that way we can both start preparing the landing procedure".
While they go through their landing preparations the passengers are recollecting their day sightseeing. Most of the passengers are from Australia and Argentina who are mostly scientists having a break from ground research and checking the scenery out from the air. The rest are from almost around the world. Most of them all were scientists who their host countries made claims while the rest are tourists who were lucky to board Flight 609.
One family from Chicago were fortunate enough to be on this flight since their son, Levon Morgan, and his five colleages and professor who were sponsored by the University of Illinois at Chicago to join the AAD on 3 voyages. An African-American college student in his senior year, Levon had a passion for Geography and the environment. He was worked very hard to join this expedition ever since his freshman year and now after his accomplishment he and his friends are ready to head back to land.
Levons little seven year old sister, Aisha, was a lover of animals, especially the penguin and the wolf. She was dying to see her two favorite animals in this voyage but and after hours of enjoying the ride she’s finally about to fall asleep next to her mother and father while levon and his friends sat in front of them.
Juan Herrera, a Dominican photographer who worked for the Toronto Star, was on a vacation seeing the sights of the mighty Antarctic. A mulatto, pudgy man in his mid 30's with a thin moustache, had been privileged enough to travel around the world. . Voted one of the best photographers in his country he had lived in many parts of Europe, the US, Canada and Australia to document their most beautiful places. After using up all his film in his camera for the day he’s now sitting in his seat trying to figure out how to work his new digital camera that seemed to cost him a fortune.
Another tourist who also tagged along with a scientist is a guy named Theo Libano, A Canadian college student in his sophomore year with black hair and blue eyes with a short muscular build , went with his sister Caitlin who was working with the AAD. Theo is a typical college student from Toronto who loves to party and hook up with girls, a type of kid with a surfer persona but has never touches the ocean often. He went with Caitlin, who was a blonde-hair blue-eyed girl, since after all these years of sibling rivalry they are finally getting along and thought this was the perfect time to bond.
Theo and Caitlin were sitting near the rear of the plane with Caitlin's colleages and friends. Caitlin was sitting on the aisle while Theo took the two empty seats and was laying on a pillow next to her leg listening to his CD player. After a couple of minutes he prompts to get up to use the restroom.
"hey kate-kate move I need to use the bathroom again" stated Theo in an obnoxious way.
"Theo you just went like 15 minutes ago?! Do you really need to go again?" replied Caitlin in a disgruntled tone.
"look all that coca-cola goes through me like a running faucet can you please just let me though" replied Theo in desperate plea.
"ok fine! hurry up alright?
"thanks kate but you don't have to sound all bitchy alright" stated Theo in a comforting yet sarcastic tone.
Caitlin glared at him while he tried getting through her seat until a pocket of turbulence makes him lose his balance and causes him to fall on his friends lap face down. After the small ordeal he looks up and looks at her friend who was startled at the time.
"hey there..you look cute from up here" stated Theo with a smile and a wink. He friend looking creeped out even more startled Caitlin got up and picked Theo off the ground and told him to behave.
"Look" saying Cate "You were doing so well for the trip do you need to start acting immature again?"
"What? I'm not bothering anyone Cate. Do you really need to be that uptight?"
"Look Theo, I know how you are but you've finally came around and got your act together and mom and dad have been persistently been trying force us to get along and now we finally are. Can you please maintain it Theo? I swear its not much to ask". Theo looking down sighing for a moment and looks up to Caitlin once again.
"You know what I'm gonna take my CD and sit somewhere esle where I can get more room to chill alright Kate?" replying Theo
"Theo im not asking you to leave.." Theo Interrupts "I know that Kate but I wanna stretch my legs and probably talk to some of the nice girls around and I don't have to bother you or your friends" Theo with a reassuring smile to Caitlin
"Alright If you say so" replying Kate with a small bit of doubt. "But when we land don't forget your stuff is above my seat ok?"
"No problem sis" replying Theo before walks into the bathroom.
"I gotta admit" Jessica, one of Caitlins colleagues commenting on Theo "He isn't too bad" with a smirk.
"Well he still my baby brother" replied Caitlin "He can turn into a gentlemen over time but yeah you know he's still gonna be the Theo we know no matter what" Jessica chuckled for a moment and replied "hey you gotta admit he's grown up". After their small discussion on Theo they went back to work on what they managed to research on the ground and air of antarctica.
Meanwhile on the flight deck Arturo had just come back from a bathroom break and is now checking up on Quito. He sits back and checks on everything to see if things were running smoothly with no error. He notices the temperature gauge and turns to Quito.
"It's 90 degrees below zero outside of the aircraft Quito. Can you believe it" stating Arturo while chuckling.
"Isn't it supposed to be colder?" Quito asking.
"Bueno Quito, Over the Antarctic in this season high up its supposed to be around 120-130 below but hey looks like we have a small warm front." As soon as Arturo fastens his seatbelt the plane suddenly starts jerking down and violently shakes for a couple of seconds. Alarmed, Arturo checks the instruments to see if they are working but finds a shocking discovery and turns to Quito.
"Quito? Did you turn on the de-icer on the wings and elevators before take-off?!" Quito looking at Arturo alarmed replying "Si!, I did when we took off why are you asking me that?"
"Quito it's says it’s off what do you mean you remember switching it to on?"
"Arturo I did all the flight checks before we took off do you really think I would forget that!" Both looking alarmed and the turbulence becoming more frequent, Quito reaches his hand and activates the De-icer only to find out something even more disturbing.
"Arturo! I think theres something wrong with the de-icer!" replying Quito frantically.
"You think??You're probably doing It wrong!" Shouted Arturo Arturo reaches to the switch but he too finds out there is something gravely wrong with the de-icer. Both are now incredibly concerned when the turbulence becomes more and more frequent and more severe. They radio in Ushuaia to let them know there’s a fault on the plane.
"Ushuaia this is 609" stating Arturo. "we have a serious problem. the de-icing system won't function and we request to descend to 15,000 feet immediately!"
"Ushuaia to 609 you are cleared to descend from 230 to 150. Please be cautious due to your malfunction." "Roger that Ushuaia" Arturo states and prepares to descend.
Arturo turns on the P.A system and announces to the passenger in a calm, stern voice with a pinging sound before the announcement. “Ladies and gentlemen we are now preparing to descend to Ushuaia International Airport and also we will be heading near some bad weather so please sit down and fasten your seatbelts, we will be expecting some moderate to severe turbulence which hopefully won’t last long.” Most of the passengers start to fasten their seatbelts or scurry back into their seats when all of a sudden the plan violently plunges down for a half a second.
Theo manages to exit the restroom without much incident due to the turbulence forming. Rocking back and forth he manages to find an empty seat next to a gorgeous woman with a skinny build with red hair clutching the handle of the seat looking out the window. Theo manages to sit down swiftly before the rocking motion forces him down. After fastening his seatbelt and trying to calm himself down the turbulence finally subsides with only slight bumps slowly rocking the plane for the moment while Looking at the girl next to him wondering if she was still alright. “nice day to fly out huh?” Theo commented sarcastically.
“hehe tell me about it” replied the girl with a nervous tone.
“The names Theo..Theo Libano and you must be…?”
“the names Emily..Emily Thompson”
“nice to meecha Emily” replying Theo with enthusiasm. “So where are you from?”
“I’m from Melbourne and where you from? America?
“No I’m actually from Canada..Toronto, Canada that is. I’m with my older sister on her research trip. I thought it would be a good time for me and her to bond”. Stating Theo more engaged in conversation.
“Aww isn’t that nice of you” replying Emily. “Well I’m here just like everyone else from Australia and that is work.”
“It’s nice just to see everything in the air without freezing your arse off” stating Emily while chuckling.
“I can imagine so” chuckled Theo. “Any after this whole trip you wanna get coffee in the most southern coffee shop In the world?’’
“ehhh..you know what why not you seemed to be an interesting boy.” replying Emily.
“awesome!” whispered Theo with great enthusiasm.
“what was that you said?” questioning Emily Before Theo managed to open his mouth to repeat himself the plane suddenly plunges down and hits back up within seconds. Now the turbulence becomes more severe.
In the flight deck things are now taking a turn for the worst with the discovery that could bring their journey to a grim end. Arturo tries to keep the plane from jumping around while Quito tries to re-activate the de-icer but fail. The turbulences pushes the plane to the left and then right downward creating a hostile environment inside the cabin.
“Do you have any idea how long ice could have been forming in the wings this whole time? Especially in this climate!?” shouted Arturo
“How should I know? What if the de-icer was broken this whole entire trip!” answered Quito.
The plane now beings to stall and the pilots have no choice but to point the nose down and increasing the engine’s power to 100% in hopes of removing the ice and bringing it out of its stall. In the cabin people are now frightened as the plane dips and the turbulence becomes destructive. The overhead bins open bringing down luggage injuring people from below, people napping without their seatbelts are awoken in the middle of the alley after being thrown off their seats trying to scurry back into them. People start screaming while a small number start praying. The rest sit in their seats silent and petrified hoping this was just a bad five minute encounter and everything will be alright. Little Aisha wakes up completely scared and confused turning to her mother
“Mommy what’s happening?!” cried Aisha
“I don’t know baby but just hold on!” shouted her mother. Arturo and Quito look at their instruments and notice that not only they are dropping altitude but in speed as well. Dropping from 23,000 to 16,000 in minutes and from 530 miles to 390 miles and both keep dropping dramatically. They are trying all they can to keep their plane up but sadly nothing seems to work anymore.
“We’re not going to make it Arturo!!” shouting Quito in fear.
“We still have about 11-12,000 feet left keep the throttles at 100% and then we can free ourselves from the stall!” Arturo shouting out. The plane now dropped from their desired altitude of 15,000 to 8,000 within less than two minutes. Things are looking worse for the crew and passengers but the pilots still haven’t given up on reviving the plane from the stall. Now oxygen masks have been released and people start to fear for the worst.
Within less than a minute they are closing in onto the ground and now the pilots also fear the worst. When the plane reaches 1000 feet things start to look up and the crew begin to regain control but it is too late. The speed of the plane starts to rise but Arturo can see the ground with the lights attached to the wings.
“Decrease throttle speed” commanded Arturo to Quito
“why do that?!” asked Quito in a frantic notion
“Just do it! If we don’t we will go nose down to the ground and we will all die!” commanded Arturo. Quito decreases all power from the throttle and Arturo pulls the airbrakes as hard as he could.
“we are less than 1000 feet and we can finally recover now why do are you doing this Arturo?!” Quito questioning.
“The instruments only can detect it by sea level and since you forgot we aren’t above any ocean we are in icy tundra the ice is 700-900 feet above. I can see the ground and if you follow as I say we might have a chance to live! This happened to me back in ’85 when my F-16 stalled so trust me on this one!” shouted Arturo.
“dios mio I hope you’re right” commented Quito Arturo pulls the yoke for the last time until an unsettling feeling hit all of them…the ground
The passengers felt the terrifying jolt as the lights go out instantly and all the panels fall out. Skidding the ground for a couple of moments when they felt airborne again. The pilots managed to land the plane on a side of a small mountain of snow and ice and had slid of a small cliff heading towards flatter ground. The plane glides once again and finally slams into the ground again breaking of both engines causing a big explosion on the left wing. Juan, looking out the window in sheer terror, notices on of the engines and half the wing on fire sees all of that disappear in a split second when the wing hits an ice boulder, ripping it off from the aircraft. Completely terrified he recites a prayer in Spanish and braces for more impact. The plane keeps moving until it hits another pair of ice bergs causing half of the right wind to break off and blow up. “I can’t believe it we’re alive!” shouting quito which he wasn’t well heard due to the instruments making incredible warning noises. Arturo sits there completely mute looking out of the window seeing a boulder right up ahead. The plane must be moving about 110 now and is slowing down rapidly.
“Brace for impact!” shows Arturo but is drowned out by the warning signals from the flight deck. Quito trying ask what but also looks out the window and both scream in terror. The plane slams into the boulder causing a quarter of the front to dent upwards creating a big hole on the top of the fuselage. The passengers feel the jolt and some thrown violently into the front of the aircraft but the rest were thrown into the seats in front of them.
Miraculously everyone survives but many are critically injured, including the pilots. The sudden cold air rushed throughout the damaged cabin as passengers try to get out in fear it would catch fire and be destroyed. However once jumping out from the emergency slides it was a different story. People now start to climb back the slide and shout to the others to stay inside. The pilots concerns about the blizzard has finally came bringing massive snow and heavy, freezing winds in which there is now way to keep the cold air out of the plane. The passengers start to mobilize and now are trying to see who is alive and who is not.
“Ushuaia to 609 are you at your designated altitude” stated the tower controller
“Ushuaia to 609 come in please” again stating the tower controller Concerned with no response with only static left he alerts other controllers around him and soon people are gathering around him
“Ushuaia to 609 come in?” replying again frantically while others are beginning to become more concerned. Checking out the radar he does not find the plane at all. Frantic and confused he alerts the military to report a missing plane.

Chapter 2: The News
June 17, 1995
Nome, Alaska
Out near the shores of Nome. Balto, who has slept in for the day, finally wakes up to the summer sun shining on him next to Jenna. He hadn't much planned for his day other than spend time with her and rosy. It seems it would be another ordinary day.
After the famous serum run back in December, he had taken a hiatus from dog sledding and dedicated himself to starting a family and encouraging young pups in dog sledding.
As the sun rises, Balto wakes up next to Jenna and gently nudges her awake.
"Morning Jenna"
Jenna yawns loudly as she tries to wake up.
"Morning Balto"
"Are we still up for the picnic with Rosy and her family?'
"Of course we are, Balto. But it won't be for another three hours so we have plenty of time to rest."
Well, I'm already feeling wide awake so I'll check up on what Boris is up to"
Jenna gets up, stretching and yawning some more, trying to wake herself up.
"Sure, Balto. I'm going to go freshen up.
Both gently glance at one another. Balto then proceeds to lick Jenna's nose.
"I love you"
"I love you too, Balto"
They proceed to hug each other until It get's interrupted by Boris shouting. Balto see's Boris shouting his name at the distance. It's sounded as if it was urgent.
BALTO! BALTO!!
Boris climbs up the boat trying to catch his breath while Balto tries to calm him down.
"Boris, what's wrong?! How come you sound so frantic??"
"Balto! Something terrible has happened! You have to come to the boiler room. Everyone's there"
"What happened?! Is it another epidemic? Bear attack?"
"NO! It's something bigger, something more tragic! You have to come see the news!"
Jenna stands there, seeming very alarmed of what Boris is saying.
"Balto, what's going on?"
"I don't know Jenna but we got to go see whats up"
All three proceeded to run to town to find out what has happened. Boris was so frantic that Balto couldn't figure out what he was trying to say along the way. All he can get out of him is something about a plane.
When he got to town, the mood has quickly changed. Everyone seemed worried and anxious. He pretty much knew this tragedy was something bigger than he thought.
He got to the Boiler room where there was a T.V showing the news. Couple of the mushers and all the dogs had their eyes glued to the T.V
As soon as he glanced his eyes towards the T.V, then he had finally found out what had happened. The anchorwoman starts of the news.
"If you are just joining us now, we have confirmed reports of a missing plane somewhere in Antarctica. Flight 609, belonging to World Airways, has disappeared somewhere near the antarctic peninsula. We are fearing the worst at this moment whether or not is has crashed or not. According to the Argentine government, they've lost radio and radar contact around 8pm last night. The last thing they received from the airliner was a request to descent altitude before sending a mayday signal before disappearing. Due to the massive blizzard forming, fighter jets are unable to scramble and look for the plane. Rescue attempts are on hold which has increased frustrations. We are unable to determine if the plane as crashed or not."
While the news keeps playing, Balto became more intrigued with Antarctica. He has heard stories about the "south" when he was a pup but has never heard or knew anything more. He wanted to find out more about this 'Antarctica'.
He turns to Jenna and asks her in a puzzled tone. "Jenna, have you heard of Antarctica?"
"No, this is my first time hearing about it. Do you have any idea about it?"
"I've heard stories about 'The South' from my father before he passed away but he never told me what it was called."
"What stories did he tell you"
"Well, all I can remember is him telling me about these birds, they don't fly but they are more vicious than the bears or the wolves here in Alaska"
"That sounds crazy" replied Jenna, in a tone of disbelief. "There is no way birds are that vicious, especially compared to wolves and bears!"
"Well, that's what I remember. I'm sure it's made up but I just want to find out more about Antarctica."
Just then, the news broadcaster turns to a report in the Anchorage Airport.
"The plane that had gone missing in Antarctica would have a beacon installed within and would send out a ping ever 5 seconds for 30 days straight. Every aircraft in the world has one installed. Now, every rescue team must act fast before the signal permanently fades or else they will lose the location of the aircraft and any attempts to find it would be nil."
"Thank you sir, now we will show you the map of Antarctica and where the plane might have last ended up"
The map of Antarctica has shown, Catching Balto's attention immediately. He finally knew what it looked like. Nothing but a giant white island. His eye's were even more focused. The anchorwoman continued on about the whereabouts of the aircraft while all the dogs started to discuss amongs themselves what is Antarctica.
"So that's Antarctica" Balto thought to himself.
"Hey look! New Alaska" Shouted a random dog.
"Since when was that called New Alaska?!" Shouted another dog.
Balto turns around and witnesses all the dogs discussing amongst themselves about the mysterious continent. Some hearing about it for the first time in their lives.
"A place like that exists?! Holy cow!"
"I thought it was just a myth"
"I wonder what the southern wolves and bears are like?"
Balto turns to Jenna and asks her. "This is going to be a discussion"
"I can tell, I'm really curious about Antarctica" Jenna replied.
Soon, they escort themselves out of the boiler room to continue on with their picnic. As soon as Balto reaches the threshold of the door, the volume of the discussion grew.
"Hey" said Balto. "We have to come back, find out more about Antarctica.
"I don't think I can come with you" Replied Jenna. "I need to spend time with Rosy. Please, tell me what you can find out."
"I will" Balto, replying back.
In a cabin in the outskirts of Nome the lonely, disgraced Malamute, Steele, lies there on his bed sleeping when he is interrupted by a noise. A small, brown lab comes running in waking him up.
"Hey Steeley!" shouts the lab
Steele, groggy and irritated, wakes up and acknowledges the Lab. "How many times have I told you Terin..not...to..wake..me..UP! and..do you still need to call me Steeley?"
"Oh C'mon Steeley! Rise and shine"
Steele finally wakes up and gets out of bed, stretching and yawing while trying to figure out what Terin wanted.
"What is it today, Terin? More play time with you or more reminders how I biggest loser in all of Nome" Replied Steele in a depressed, disgruntled tone.
"Oh Steeley, That was like 6 months ago! I'm sure people already got over that!"
Steele, glaring at Terin with disbelief. He then proceeds to come up to Terin and gives him an explanation.
"Uh, no Terin, they will not get over that because I managed to screw everything up. I lost the girl I wanted and I lost all respect from the town. But they, you're right, I'm sure everyone has gotten over that" replied Steele in a sarcastic tone.
"Don't be so hard on yourself, I still like you." replied Terin with a smile.
"I'm glad you do" answered Steele with a straight face.
"Oh I almost forgot to tell you! Something bad happened on the news!"
Before Steele built up the thought of rushing Terin out of his cabin, his ears perked abit.
"Really, what happened?"
"I was in my owners place and the telly was on, Something about a plane crash"
His ears perked even more and his attention was focused.
"Plane crashed? Where?"
"In a place called Antarctica"
"Anta-tca-What?" replied Steele, confused.
"Ant-arctic-ca, Silly. I saw the map on the telly. It's a huge white Island on the bottom of the earth. I think its bigger than Alaska."
Steele, now more intrigued, asks Terin more about Antarctica.
"What do you know about this big white island?"
"Not much but I heard it has mutant birds that can even make the strongest grizzly bear make a run for it. Hell, they can even kill the strongest pack of wolves with their beaks.
Steele giving blank look at Terin in total disbelief.
"Right....you expect me to believe that "mutant" birds can fend of wolves and bears?"
"Oh yeah, I'm not joking about that" replied Terin with a smile.
Steele proceeds to laugh and mock Terin for his claim of the mutant birds. Terin slightly frowns from Steele's mocking.
"I'm serious, Steeley! We should sneak to town and find out from the humans."
Steele's laughter stops immediately and he stares back at Terin.
"Terin, I was banished! They would throw me out in heart beat. I'm NOT going to through that again! How many times do I have to explain that I can't go back."
"Nonsense! We can just sneak in! We can pretend to be spies! Besides, you need to get out of this cabin. Staying in all day makes you grouchy...and you kind of put on some weight"
"Thank you for noticing, Terin" Steele replied in a snark way. He contemplates on whether or not to find out more about the plane crash in Antarctica. After Terin's persistence on the matter, he agrees to sneak in.
"Fine, Terin, I'll sneak in with you but if I get caught its your head!"
"Yippy!!! There's a meeting tonight discussing about Antarctica. I can't wait! We can totally get all the info we need."
For once after a long time, Steele's depressed mood lifts. They both discuss on how to sneak in and find out the details relating to the mysterious continent.

Chapter 3
Deep South
All the dogs assembled into the boiler room to discuss the legend of the continent they found out as Antarctica. Many stories have been passed around arousing the interest of the town dogs. Many had different opinion on what is inside what they referred to as the Deep South.
Many of the dogs have never ventured south of Anchorage or even left Alaska. A handful have only been as below as Juneau and only one dog has only been to San Francisco. But their forefathers have been outside of Alaska and only have their stories to tell.
Balto, accompanied by Boris, enters town talking about what will they hear from the boiler room.
"You think there are geese in Antac-ta-ca?"
"I'm not even sure, Boris, but we will try to find out what's there. There are so many stories circulating now that we need to find out."
"How is it that we finally find out about such place. I mean we can find any place around the world with a map, yet not even know what is this place?"
"Like I said Boris, we are going to find out more."
While walking towards the boiler room, they managed to bump into Kaltag, Nikki and Star.
"Hey guys! Trying to find out about Antarctica as well"?
"Of course Bawlto" Replied Nikki. "It's been the talk of the town since this morning.
"Yeah" replied Kaltag. "It's been constantly being talked about. All I've been hearing are theres birds as well that live in Antarctica"
"Mutant Birds! hahahaha" Shouted Star. "I've never heard something so ridiculous"
"You know, my dad told me something as well but I think that was a myth." Replied Balto.
"Like what?" said Kaltag.
"The same thing you're telling me. 'Mutant' birds. I'm having a hard time believing these birds can take on wolves and bears"
"HAHAHAH MUTANT BIRDS" Shouted Star right before Kaltag bops him in the head falling to the ground.
"Y'know, I wonder if Steele found out 'bout this. You think he'll sneak here?" Nikki asking Balto.
"I doubt it. He's been banished. I don't think he is going to risk the consequences". Replied Balto.
"Besides, Nikki, what is he going to gain from knowing about Antarctica? It's no use to him"
"Good point."
Yeah" Replied Kaltag. "I don't think Steele could care less about mutant birds"
"We should feed him to the mutant birds!" Shouts Star.
Before Kaltag rose his fist he thought first and thought it was funny.
"Actually, Star, that's not a bad idea."
"Really?"
"Oh yeah, that jerk deserves that treatment for trying to sabotage the serum run." Nikki answered.
"Look" replied Balto "Steele's gone, lets not worry about him."
All five walked into the boiler room only to find out how packed it is. They walk around trying to find room and sit. The noise of the debate was unusually loud and filled with nonsense.
"Ey yo Bawlto, I found us a spot" Shouted Nikki in the far corner.
They cozy up to the spot where Nikki reserved for them. The whole room was formed as a semi-circle waiting for Doc. The whole room was anxiously waiting for him. Doc had organized the entire meeting along with Morse, who would help provide the giant map above waiting to uncoiled. The more waiting they endured, the more the conversation turned from Antarctica to where's Doc.
"What's taking so long?" Star asking Balto
"You know Doc. I'm sure he's coming soon.
"Is he always fashionably late?" Boris asking Balto.
"I guess he is. Why don't you just relax, Boris. He's going to show up anyway."
Fifteen minutes have past until Doc finally shows up. The bickering had silenced immediately. He walks past the dogs onto the center where everyone can see him. above him is the map coiled up with morse possessing the string to be ready to pull. He organizes himself, clears his throat and starts his speech, having the whole room's attention.
"I'm sure all of you have heard the terrible news. A large aircraft carrying many souls on board has disappeared in what the humans call 'Antarctica'. I have been getting more updates from the news and to be frank, they are still struggling to find the plane.
"Now before I go on about the tragedy, we will speak of the place called Antarctica. Morse, pull the string."
The map uncurls and shows a massive picture of Antarctica, awing the entire boiler room.
"So, what I have learned that this earth has two different seasons. We are on the top of the world and Antarctica is in the bottom. The line called the equator separates the two seasons. When it is winter in Nome, It's summer in Antarctica. When it is summer here, it's winter down there. We all have believed that we lived in the coldest parts of the earth but, to our beliefs, that is not entirely true. As you can see on the map, the continent lies right below the south pole. It is entirely surrounded by the ocean while Alaska surrounds the Arctic Ocean, making it much warm than in the Deep South. We have bears, wolves, caribou and us dogs. However, not much is known on what life is there in Antarctica.
A dog interrupts his speech.
"But what about the killer birds?!"
"Yeah, the ones that can kill anything?!"
"That's preposterious!"
The whole room once again descents into a loud discussion regarding the birds.
"People, people please! What you are hearing is untrue. Yes, there are birds but they are killer neither mutant. They are mere seagulls that live near the coast. All they do is hunt fish and that is all"
"That's not what I heard!" Shouted a random dog.
"I hear they swim and eat anyone if they are in the water!"
Again, the crowd descents into chaos.
"Are these people out of their mind?" Balto, thinking to himself.
Doc shouts to the whole room to stop talking.
"Everyone! let me get to the point. There are no killer birds at all. They are just myths to scare you as pups. Now, let me finish. Since any rescue attempts have been botched by the southern winter, there is a slight yet good chance that they may use sled dogs to find the missing plane. Unlike here, they are strict in who goes in. They haven't used sled dogs for two years now yet, they are making an exception. I doubt they may use us but if they find that there are survivors they will use us and we must fulfill our services again as sled dogs."
Doc then turns to Balto
"Balto, please come up to the center"
"I..I don't know, I'm not good with speeches"
"Nonsense Balto, go up." Kaltag commenting.
"Trust me, there won't be any speeches but you are invited to say something" Doc comforting Balto.
Balto gets up from his spot and heads towards the center with Doc, having the Antarctic map behind him. Doc, again, clears his throat and speaks again.
"Here is a genuine hero. He has saved this town from Diphtheria not too long again in the harsh winter. We could all thank him. I'm sure if he is called for duty find the plane he will be up for it."
"Ummm..I guess" replied Balto, nervously.
"You can all look up to him. If they find any living souls then you should all serve. Balto was brave and strong going through the blizzard, helping his fellow dog. Even defeating that scoundrel Steele, taking a horrible beating but, he thought of you and the rest of the people of Nome. I'm sure Balto can help find any survivors."
Doc then turns to Balto
"It may seem like a MUCH larger challenge but can you be up for it if they do need you?"
Balto pauses nervously but turns to gaze at the map. Seeing how he wanted adventure he proceeded to say yes. The whole crowd cheers him on and chants his name.
BALTO, BALTO, BALTO!
Outside the boiler room, Steele and Terin are hearing in the entire conversation.
"Call me a scoundrel..That son-of-a"
"Shhhhhsh, Steeley. You don't want to get caught. After all its on my head right?"
"Of course..I guess"
Steele and Terin manage to peak through the door quietly and both saw the map of Antarctica.
"Terin, Move! You're in my way"
"Sorry Steely" whispered Terin.
"Here, I'll get underneath ya."
"Wolfdog is in the middle of the ***** way. I can't see this Ant-acti-ca or whatever"
"Steeley, it's pronounced Ant-arcti-"
"I know what it is" Steele whispered harshly.
Balto moves back to his spot with his group and both get a clear glimpse of the map. Steele gazes at the map in awe as he finally gets to know what Antarctica is.
"Impressive" Steele whispered to himself.
"I know, right?" Terin whispering to Steele.
"Your not kidding, It looks a lot bigger than Alaska. Where did you say the plane went down?"
"I don't know but it's there somewhere"
A dog overheard whispering and turned to the door which was slightly open. Steele and Terin jolted back and ran for cover. Terin hides Steele behind a couple of trash cans and heads to the dog calling someone out.
"Hey, who's out there?"
"Just me!" Terin replied
"Terin, who were you talking to? And why are you out this late?"
"I just want to know what's going on?"
"Terin, get back home. Don't worry about what's going on here."
"But I want to know too. Antarctica has been the talk of the day!"
"Don't make me tell your parents you are out here this late."
"Alright, fine! I'll go home"
"You better not be hanging out with Steele! We rather not tell you for the third or fourth time not to associate with that degenerate. If you're mother finds out, she is going to be furious, again!"
"I'm not! I'm going to go home now"
Terin runs off to get Steele out of the trash cans and goes to explain where he can take him next.
"A degenerate? are you serious!!!"
"Who cares, it's just some dumb old dog. Anyway, I know a place where we can get more info on Antarctica and all that jazz"
"My place! It's near the mayors house, we can even have a sleepover!"
"I don't know If I can stay here longer. If they find me, I'm dead"
Without warning, the doors of the boiler room open. Steele jumps back and hides from the incoming crowd. Without any choice, he follows Terin to his home as quickly as possible.
Balto steps out with the gang as they all head home. The dogs are however, still in doubt about the dismissal of the existence of the killer bird. The large group walks out while Balto steps to the side. He's wondering if there's any possibility of a sled dog team being sent to Antarctica. The thought of that nerves him to the core. All he wants to do is start a family with Jenna but a the same time the curiosity of the entire event still lingers in his mind.
"Boris, I really need to find out if they are actually going to send dogs down there. This is going to bother me if I don't"
"Balto, It's fine, don't worry about it. I'm sure some rescue team is being set up. Besides the big dog told us they stopped using dogs for Ant-arcta-ca years ago. Now these humans use all this technology. There's no need to stress."
"But they are going to make an exception. There's a blizzard down there. If these humans can't use their technology to find that plane, they'll use us!"
"I'm sure he's exaggerating"
"The heck with it. I'm sneaking to the mayors house to find out."
Balto rushes to the mayors house with Boris shouting in the background to come back but knowing Balto better, he follows him straight on.

I bet those killers they keep mentioning are really leopard seals. Who really can be quite vicious at times.

Chapter 4: The update
June 17, 1995 10:21pm
Balto rushes towards the mayor's house at full speed while Boris exhaustingly tries to catch up. The skies above him are clear with the moonlight shining accompanied by the twinkling stars. He then starts to slow down and positions his ears towards the sky. He looks behind to see a medium size jet coming in for a landing at the Nome Airport.
"That's odd, planes don't usually land in this late"
The plane flies low and he stands there witnessing it's landing. By that time, Boris manages to catch up at scolds Balto for running to fast for him to catch up.
"Balto!" Shouts Boris
"Do you always have to take off so fast! I'm not the fastest goose. Besides why did you need to stop to see some plane land!"
"Sorry Boris, but I find it odd that plane is landing at the airport so late. Don't they usually stop services around 9?"
"I have no idea! I'm not some airport/airplane expert! How should I know!
"Something tells me that plane landing here this late has something to do with what happened in Antartica"
"Oh, really, what are you? A psychic?"
"Remember what Doc said? There's a chance they could send dogs down and those people landing here could have the answers so lets go!" Balto shouts in enthusiasm.
"Wait for me!" Boris shouts while Balto runs off once again.
Behind the mayors house lies a small vent that any small creature or dog can get through and hear any conversation going on underneath the floor boards. While Balto and Boris catch up, Steele and Terin already have beaten them to it. Here Terin demonstrates Steele on opening the vent. Apparently, Terin sneaks here many times and is one of the few dogs besides Balto that knows the secret passage.
"Here it is Steeley! The secret entrance to the mayor's house. Nobody knows this but me!" Terin telling Steele with an enthusiastic smile.
"Clever kid" replies Steele
"Now, how many times do you sneak up here?"
"Almost all the time. I find out a lot of things! Aren't I crafty."
"I guess you are, kid" Steele stating with smirk
"Now, open that thing!"
"On it Steeley!"
Terin uses his paws to open the right corner of the vent where the two screws holding it in were missing. He manages to open it and allows Steele to scurry in first to avoid any potential detection. Terin follows through and uses his teeth to close the rest of the vent. They crawl through the narrow crawl space, litter with spider webs above and mildew on the ground until they found a small open area where they can stand on all four paws.
"See, we are right under the mayor's living room..or office. Either way, he is always having a conversation anyway."
"I don't hear anything."
Suddenly, they hear multiple footsteps coming in from the door. The voice of the mayor is heard along with another familiar voice accompanied by other voice of strangers.
While they both sit and start to listen they hear another strange noise...someone else coming in from the vent. The situation for Steele tenses to the maximum...the sound of Balto's voice is heard.
"Oh crap, It's the wolfdog!"
"Who" whispered Terin.
"The wolfdog, Balto!" Steele whispered harshly.
"OOOH"
Steele manages to cover Terins mouth with his paw to shut him up but its too late.
"Hey, is anyone down here?" asking Balto
Steele manages to scurry and hide behind a post holding the floorboards while Terin stands guard, making sure Steele isn't in sight.
"Well kid? Aren't you going hide!" Steele whispers
Before Terin can answer or even act for that matter. Balto and Boris enters the free space and is taken by surprise to see Terin.
"Terin, what in the hell are you doing down here?!" Balto shouts
"Ummm...just spying on the mayor?" Terin replies
"Do you know how late it is for you?" Boris adds one
"Oh come on! you never let me have fun, you old geeser
"Now who are YOU calling old geeser you little rugmut!" Shouts boris in a disgruntled tone.
Balto looks behind and sees a dark, furry figure hiding behind the post Terin is sitting in front of.
"Terin, who are you hiding?"
"I don't know what you are talking about. I'm here all alone."
Balto leans his head to take a better look at the figure and is astounded to what he finds.
"Terin let me ask you again" Balto stating in a very serious tone. "Who are you hiding?"
"I'm not hiding anyone, I swear."
Balto then glares at Terin, figuring out who he is hiding. Then his voice tones deeper.
"It better not be who I think you are hiding, Terin." Balto states while his voice sharpens while calling the pups name.
"Cut the der'mo, little pup, I know who you are hiding! How many times has Balto, me and the town have told you not to hang around Steele!" Shouting Boris in an angry tone.
"Who's..Steele" replying Terin while his eyes roll to the left, leaving a nervous tone in his voice.
Balto places his paw on his face.
"For the love god, Terin."
Steele, knowing he was caught, gets up, walks and sits by Terin's side.
"Hello...WOLFDOG!"
"I tried my best to hide you, Steeley, but I guess it didn't work"
Steele, turning to him with snark tone
"Thanks for the help, TERIN! Now we are BOTH in trouble"
Balto, giving a hostile glare at Steele and Terin at the same time, ponders on why they are both down here.
"What brings you here?! You realize you were banished from Nome right?" Balto, questioning Steele
Steele gets up and walks towards Balto with a pomp stature and giving a calm tone.
"I'm here for the same reason as you are, Ant-acti-ca"
Terin sitting there correcting Steele
"Steely, It's pronounced Antarctica.
Strangely, Balto and Steele, at the same time reply to Terin.
We know, Terin.
They both proceed to keep eye contact on each other, in case of any more hostilities would arise. Steele continues his explanation to Balto and Boris.
"Yeah, I'm here for the same reason as you are. Flight 609, Ant-arctic-ca, killer BIRDS, even the possibility of ANOTHER sled dog relay team down there. Yeah, I can't help with my curiosity. It's not my fault I want to know more. You can't stop me from hearing whats going on this world."
"No I can't Steele. I can't stop you from hearing the news but that STILL doesn't give you the right to waltz back here, getting Terin involved and expect everyone to be ok with it. They still remember the serum run, Steele. They'll never let that down!"
Before Steele would say anything, they heard footsteps and a conversation starting with the mayor and another group of people. All four looked up and began hearing the whole conversation.
"It's a pleasure to meet you, gentlemen. How was your flight from Anchorage?"
A man with a hispanic accent answers back
"It was alright. Getting here was long enough."
"I'm sure you must be exhausted getting here from Washington, I'm sure all of you are."
A woman with an American accent answers back.
"Yes it was, sir, but due to circumstances this was a needed trip. Allow me to introduce you to our special committee. This is Rogero Cortez, the ambassador of Argentina from the embassy. Over there is Sven Nords, our Norwegian ambassador. Armando Colon from the Argentine exposition group who is in charge of the Estevan base in Antarctica, Kyle Williams our Australian ambassador and theres Ben and I, Michelle who are representatives of the Clinton administration."
"Now, what can I do for you nice folks tonight?" questions the mayor.
"Well" Ben replies. "The Argentine and Australian government are having a difficult time making any recovery attempts of the plane due to the massive blizzards that are hitting Antarctica. We feel we need special help with sled dogs. We had stopped the use of them back in '93 we are allowing an exception this time."
"Yes." Michelle adds on. "We heard about Balto, the dog who managed to go through one of the nastiest blizzards here back in January and also the dog sled team that were with him. We would like to request to borrow the dogs to help us out recover the Flight data recorder and Blackbox of the aircaft."
The mayor sits on his chair and contemplates on such a big request.
"That sounds way too big. You aren't trying to save a town from diphtheria but looking for a plane in Antarctica. It's nowhere near the conditions here in Alaska."
"We understand sir" Ben speaks.
Kyle comes in the speech with a heavy Australian accent.
"We lost a good few women and men on that plane. One of our best Antarctic scientist! We can't just sit here and do nothing"
"I agree" Rogero adds on. "We lost our good scientists representing Ar-hen-tina. We even lost two good pilots who were in our air force."
"Ya" Sven adding on as well. "We helped you out during the serum run. You think you can help us this time?"
"It's only a decent request" Ben replying. "We'll make sure the dogs are safe and well kept. We'll even bring them back safe and sound and make sure nothing happens to them. We really need all your good dogs you have in Nome. I mean ALL of them. This is no time to sit around and wait for a miracle."
The mayor contemplates again, looking at all of the people standing before them. He finally comes to a mix conclusion.
"Look, I understand this was a terrible disaster but, let me think about this. I won't give you a long time but in all honesty, this a big decision."
'Well sir." Ben replying. "We will be here until the 20th so please come up with a decision. If the blizzards do subside then we will figure out something else but In the mean time we are throwing this out. Please do hear us out."
"I will." Said the mayor.
"Well, sir, sorry to have bothered you this late. We will be heading towards the airport hotel. Goodnight and I hope you come up with a decision soon"
"Thank you, ma'am. I'll let you know as soon as possible.
The people proceeded to leave with the doors closing behind them. The mayor then talks to himself on how ridiculous the situation is.
"We have, planes, helicopters, radar, snowmobiles, hell even satellites and yet they still want dogs! What is this? 1925! Sheesh."
The mayor proceeds to head to his bedroom and shuts the door leaving the whole house silent once again. Balto is shocked at how they wanted him lead the dogs in Antarctica leaving Steele infuriated yet, not showing any emotions due to the awkward meeting.
"Well, Steele." Said Balto In a serious tone. "I think it's time for you to leave."
Steele scoffs yet not wanting the risk of getting caught goes first through the ventilation.
"See you around, WOLFDOG" Replied Steele before crawling away with Terin behind hoping Balto doesn't notice. It doesn't work and Balto stomps his paw on Terin's tail causing him to slightly yelp.
"Where do you think you're going, young pup?" Balto asking Terin
"I'm going home, Balto. Please don't tell my mom I'm hanging out with Steele" pleading Terin.
"No can do. You're going home with me and Jenna and we are going to have a serious, long talk along with Boris. After that we are taking you home and you are going to have to explain to your mother why you seem to keep breaking that rule. I've had it and so has everyone esle!"
"I don't understand why you guys hate him so much! He's just misunderstood and he made a terrible mistake"
"Terin!" shouts Balto "He's a selfish, egotistical dog! He only thinks about himself and no one else. You cannot keep looking up to him. He almost got the town killed by diphtheria! You know what? Jenna, Boris and I will give you a very clear explanation about Steele. After that I do NOT want to catch you with him again."
Boris and Balto escort Terin out of the vent and take him back to Jenna's house where he will endure a very long lecture and a punishment from his mother. It will be a long night for poor Terin. Even though Balto is right, Terin still see's redeeming qualities of Steele the town refuses to see.
June 18, 1995
12:03 am.
Arturo lies face down on the yoke jammed deep into his glass instrument. The poor pilot had been induced in a coma after hitting his head. The cold air rushes through the broken cockpit window and the flight deck freezes. The front of the plane is in a slightly downward position with the nose completely dented right into the front part of the plane. The plane is dented. Behind the first door the plane is tilted upward, leaving air rushing into the holes.
The passengers are huddled in the plane. They have managed to open the cargo doors and retrieve their luggages, opened them up and formed massive blankets from within the cabin. The injured passengers are in the back being kept the warmest while the able-bodied ones are in the front section keeping themselves warm enough. It's dark, cloudy and the air wisps through yet, the second blizzard had not hit. They are lucky tonight. Christian is with the injured as he lays there with a broken nose and a concussion trying stay conscious. Theo lies there near him as well suffering broken legs while Caitlin, who got away with a few bruises, takes care of him along with Emily. Cailtin cries along his side regretting mistreating him as the thought of almost dying rushes through her mind and everyone else.
Juan, who also got away with a few scratches, Tries to help the injured passengers as well. At the same time he is taking pictures of the destroyed plane and what lies outside as well. The cold winds dies down to just slight wisps and, along with some passengers, steps outside for a cigarette break. Not the smartest of ideas but if risking smoking in the plane would risk and explosion. He puts on a heavy duty coat and proceeds to climb down outside where four passengers leave except one.
He steps outside to see a man with long brown hair wrapped in a pony tail, smoking a couple of cigarettes looking at the night southern sky. He joins the man and bums off a cigarette of him and starts a conversation.
"Wonderful night to be stuck in this ice hell" Said the man in an Australian accent.
"Si, it is!" replies Juan.
"My names Tristan, Tristan Farrell and you?"
"Juan Herrera"
"Where you from, Juan?"
"The Dominican Republic, but I live in Vancouver. I work for the newspaper there."
"Sounds Gnarly, Juan! Now, how does someone from the Caribbean end up all the way down here?"
"I travel a lot. I'm a world photographer. I have work published in the National Geographic. In fact I used to live in Australia for awhile. Aren't you from there, speaking from your accent?"
"Why, yes I am. I'm from Townsville."
"I've been there! Magnetic island is beautiful! I want to go back...if we can get out of here. What brings you here?"
"Well, I'm a scientist here for Antarctica. Been in Mcmurdo Station and around some of the Australian stations around. I study what life is lingering below the ice."
"Found anything?"
"Nothing extraordinary but there are algae and bacteria that grow in these climates."
"Never knew that! You think they will find like a new specie of animals under the ice?"
"Maybe, who knows? We keeping finding new things everyday."
They both wrap up their conversations and finish their cigarettes before they head back in to check on the injured passengers. The non injured passengers are carefully cooking up the food and rationalizing it so they don't finish it up. They rationalize all the water as well. Juan and Tristan sneak up a beer and head to any empty seat.
Tristan sits at an aisle seat reading the safety card out of boredom when he sees and air phone in front of him. He pulls out the cord and starts to check it out but he finds out something that surprises him deeply...the phone is working. Thinking to himself that since there's no power there's no way it could work. He calls out Juan to tell him what's going on.
"Juan, this phones functioning! Do you have a credit card?"
"Not with me but I'll ask anyone"
Juan gets up on top of a seat behind Tristan and announces to everyone that an air phone is still working and there's a chance it could make a call. All the passengers look up and rush towards Tristan. They all wanted to see for themselves if that phone could work. One American scientists gives him a Visa card and ask him to call anyone. Tristan thinks to himself and decides to call a media outlet to tell any journalist that they are ok. One Australian gives him the number of ABC news australia and hopes it works.
Tristan swipes the card and surprisingly it accepts. He dials the number and to even a bigger surprise.....it rings. He announces the whole cabin that the phone was ringing and everyone cheers. A lady on the other line answers.
"Hello, this is ABC news, may I ask who is calling?"
"Yes, this is Tristan Farrell, one of the passengers on Flight 609. We need to talk to a journalist now!"
The lady, in disbeliefs, answers back
"Umm..alright ill find someone now."
She puts him on hold for less than a minute before a man picks up the phone
"This is Toby Collins of ABC news who's calling?"
"This is Tristan Farrell, a passenger of Flight 609!"
"Excuse me? Did you say flight 609?'
"Yes!" Tristan shouts "Most of us are alive! The pilot is dead but the co-pilot and the rest of the crew are alive. We have some who are in critical condition. We have no idea how we survived but we need help! Tell the world we are alive!"
Toby sits in his desk completely shocked and in disbelief. He checks his caller id and finds it says 'World Airways'. Even more shocked, he starts recording the conversation.
"Arlight, Tristan. I'm recording the conversation. Please tell me whats going on right now?"
Tristan explains the entire situation. How the plane went down, how most survived and how they are stuck. This is going to be the biggest story since the planes disappearance.
