I have a couple of questions that's been bothering me for a long while.
(These are mainly about Simba's Pride, so they may contain spoilers. You were warned. And they're mainly about Simba. No, I am not a Simba-hater. These have just been on my mind, that's all.)
Question #1: What is up with Simba being so overprotective about Kiara?
- No offense, I think he shouldn't have worried so much. I mean, sure he cares about the well-being of the future Queen, his daughter, but what about when he was a cub? He didn't seem to be protected as much as a child, unlike what he did to his own daughter. And besides, he was a liar, and quite untruthworthy if you ask me. Remember what he did on Kiara's first hunt? He said he promised to let her do it on her own, and yet he sent Timon and Pumbaa after her to make sure she didn't get hurt.
Question #2: Why did Simba forget what he had told Kovu: "Sometimes, what's left behind can grow better than the generation before... if given the chance"?
- *sigh* This one gets on my nerves. One moment he was talking to Kovu about that quote, the next moment Kovu is exiled from the Pride Lands and Simba acts like a real prick. No offense. Thank goodness he finally understands at the end of the film (thanks to his own daughter and a little help from Kovu).
I guess Simba can't be the perfect King that he wants to be. What do you guys think?

Id forgotten about the way Simba was in TLK2.
a real prick is the word for that part when he exiles Kovu.
I guess these are reasonable questions but i haven't been so much of a LK fan so i never thought about it.
(also i have seen the movie once and that was like a year ago)

Simba really annoyed me in the sequal. I think he was way off character, same goes for Nala. They pretty much took her out of the picture completely though.
Anyways, the only thing I could think of for his overprotectiveness is that he didn't want the same, or similar, things that happened to him, to happen to Kiara. Or, as some fans have speculated, originally the cub born in TLK 1 was supposed to be a male. There were even official books published that even named his son and showed him as a cub. So maybe his son died in some kind of accident when he wasn't watching and now he's over protective. Makes for a good fan fic at leat.

I don't understand why he said that either. He flip flopped on that one. XP

I think that he was different in the sequel, too; but remember : the team under this sequel was different too. I guess it's very difficult to get the accurate personnalities for the characters, especially when it comes to making a sequel with a low budget, to one of the biggest success of all time.
This also make me wondering why they didn't get a real budget for the sequel and a theatrical release : I mean, the original Lion king was (and still is, except Nemo maybe) the biggest grossing animated film at the box office...

One would think that the production team from TLK2:SP would learn a few things themslves from the first movie before making such unnecessary changes in Simba's behavior in the second.

He was kind of annoying, but his heart was trying to be in the right place. He was just trying to be the best King is could be, almost an equal or better than his father, Mufasa. Have you noticed that with most sequels, the female main character (the one that falls for the lead male) is just a very minor character (with exception of TLM2 because Ariel was more major then Eric was . . . the situation flip-flopped there. Except for the fact that it was Ariel being overprotective, not Eric. Heck, he probably didn't know about it all! But I digress.). I'm surprised that Nala didn't watch Simba carefully, and scold him when he started sending Timon and Pumbaa to watch over Kiara. Ha ha, that would be good. That does sound like an interesting plotline for a fic. I guess he didn't want the past to repeat itself because of his mistake. (Maybe that could also be the motive for that dream that he had during the film, when he thought Kovu would become just like Scar and destroy him like Scar did to Mufasa) Greykitty wrote: Quote: "Sometimes, what's left behind can grow better than the generation before... if given the chance" I don't understand why he said that either. Of course. And I guess that beatdown gave him a memory lapse or something. Just Simba's way of trying to be a wise King. He just revealed that he's still learning about being a King, and that although he has the title of King, he's still a young Crown Prince, given the title before he was mature enough to understand things.
But that's just me.

I just think that he wanted to protect his daughter. He didn't want her to make the mistakes she did.

I think I may be able to shine a little light on Simba's quote:
Quote: Sometimes, what's left behind can grow better than the generation before... if given the chance.
What Simba is trying to do here is convince himself that he sees the positive change in Kovu he's been seeing (and a true change at that, only by Zira's set-up does Simba "lose faith" in Kovu).
Simba knew Scar, what Scar did to Mufasa and himself, and thus was prejudiced against any of Scar's offspring -- with good reason, of course: Scar's treachery and assault on the balance of the Pridelands was something never to allow to happen again... Simba did not want to take chances with Kovu, who he suspected was just like Scar (which he was trained to be by Zira).
The "chance" he speaks of is his own leniency he's allowed himself by accepting Kovu in; it's one of his first guards of prejudice he lets down, and he takes the walk with Kovu to test out and cement that confidence he has in Kovu, and to see whether he could inspire active reciprocation (return) of Kovu's loyalty to himself (Simba).
Make some sense?

Well I think those questions where stressed a lot in the movie. They were part of the main moral. It showed about how Simba didn't like his father portecting him so much, it showed back to Simba's childhood. And the one about the "generations..." well it showed changes, and made Simba even more angrier I guess, because he had shown affection towards Kovu. All for the plot.

Yes,Simba did love Kiara, but he was just a bit too overprotective of Kiara, whereas,Nala was just protective, and allowed Kiara a little bit of personal freedom.

Simba's just like any other father: Overprotective of his little girl. And yes, I'm speaking from experience.
I agree with Darkslash on Simba's line. Simba was saying that he was giving Kovu a chance, but then Zira happened to show up and Simba said "Well, you've just lost that chance."

Yeah, I see your point. I've noticed that most parents that are young (like in their first film), they usually end up being really protective about their offspring . . . like with Simba, Ariel (TLM2), Balto (duh.), and others . . . for example.
Yeah, I noticed that too. But I guess he forgot about the wisdom that he was so into teaching to both Kovu and Kiara that his anger caused him to be enraged, allowing his feeling of betrayal to take over his royal wisdom.
Thank goodness he had such a powerfully rebellious daughter. If Kiara didn't run away and unite with Kovu, the Outsiders and Simba's pride probably would still be fighting to the death.
ever think about that?
(Ooh, this is such a good discussion!)
