Before I say anything more I am also a Mario fan but he is definately out of the picture in comparison to Balto.
They are both supposed to be heroes right? Other than that Mario is Japanese and Balto is obviously American, which in reality would be the better hero, Mario saving Peach from Bowsers clutches or Balto bringing back the medicine. If Bowser won though, itd probably be the end to Mario. You decide.
Before I submit this, dont lecture me because I know Mario is make believe.

Rather...odd topic setting, but Balto would beat Mario as a hero anytime hands down for me.

Balto! He actually existed and real people were saved, unlike Mario.

While they are competing, Luigi shall exploit the weaknesses of both and be crowned the victor, which will entitle him to another game in which he is the star.

Banshee wrote: Balto! He actually existed and real people were saved, unlike Mario. Quite agreed. Since: a) Balto was indeed a very real dog that was feted as a hero after his part in the serum run (small though it actually was) b) Mario is a video game character Comparing the concept of one video game character rescuing another (as zany, if perhaps as fun, as the original, the Super Mario Brothers, and "Jr." may have been) to that of a dog leading a team to help rescue a town from a diphtheria epidemic is ridiculous. The two situations are not in the least way analogous...nor are the "heroic" concepts of either character even remotely similar.

This does not mean that he cannot still be a short, moustachioed Italian plumber. The Japanese know there is a big, wide world outside of their own island nation, after all.
