Someone posted a review of both the series and the well-known episode here :

Don't forget mine: http://gregory-weagle.livejournal.com/175205.html

Contains the link to the actual rant and credits list. I thought the Ink & Pixel club did an outstanding job summing up the show and the episode. It's funny how the one show that critics bashed because it was a disgrace to the Jungle Book (Never mind that Walt basically did the same thing on a movie scale to keep it G or PG); and yet it turns out so well. Hindsight was never Disney's strong point; although Walt did have foresight over Eisner and Iger in general.

All I say is this: Kick Buttowski: Meet a REAL Daredevil!

I remember reading that review.

That was one of my favorite Talespin episodes. Blast that Daring Dan.

I actually did an adaptation of this episode in an episode of Trouble Shooters.

Sorry if I'm bumping an old topic. Liked the review and wanted to give my two cents.

Liked the episode, Kit seemed more whole when placed in a more flawed childlike light as he spent a little too much time on the show as a slightly bland Straight Man, with Baloo or Rebecca usually playing the more vibrant multi faceted characters. As pointed out in the review as well, the enthasis on the fact Kit was still a kid helped develop their bond somewhat more broadly.

Heh, it points out that 'conviently dissappearing Molly' situation a few fans tend to note.

I noticed the animation for the later half of the episode seems much higher quality, was this handed to two different studios perhaps?

That Lady And The Tramp idea could work, I mean a lot of these relocationing spin offs the Disney Afternoon made work better than the official follow ups (look at the second JB and LATTs).

When I think about it, there aren't so many characters like Kit in the Disney universe (acting like adult, but with inner problems and trying to hide his child side) Apart from Gosalyn maybe, but her personnality is still different.

It was produced by both Hanho Heung-up & Walt Disney Animation Japan (so yes, the higher quality parts are probably due to the Disney Japan staff)

As said Kit could be this a fair few times, Flight School Confidencial and his intro in the pilot for example were his own moments, and some of his 'straight man' roles he played rather well, but in a few episodes he just seemed like he had the least character and was balanced less with a distinguishing personality flaw (Baloo's laziness, Becky's pompousness, Molly's own childishness, and WildCat being, well, Wildcat). Maybe he was put into a few too many episodes and as a result they couldn't always find a place for him.

I'll admit there are worse characters under this 'wise beyond their years' character type though, since it's often a persona that involves having less flaws than the older cast for humor appeal, and personality flaws are often vital to a character to be interesting. I thought Kit usually worked best in the episodes he was mix of both, eg. a multi faceted type that could be highly knowledgable and resourceful about navagating the Sea Duck one minute and then be running around making 'NYYEEGGHHH' noises for his toy one the next.

Got it. Yeah, I can usually tell the different studios by the different style, but I never knew the names (outside Disney of France, due to people on YouTube usually praising it for it's animation quality, eg. first two Plunder and Lightnings, Bygones).

Had a feeling it was Japan for that though, the animation has this rather sterdy, almost anime-ish feel (they also did ones like Save The Tiger and Time Waits For No Bear right?). Am I also right in thinking they did early episodes for most of the other Disney shows at the time (eg. Duck Tales, Winnie the Pooh)?

The contrast makes sense, Hanho Heung-up made some of lesser quality ones due to floatier animation and arguably the ugliest character models (Spy in the Ointment and A Star Is Torn?).

I think there were two more studios. One did about a third of the entire show (eg. My Fair Baloo and From Here To Machinery) and the other slightly higher quality one did about the same amount as the others (The Harder They Oink and Bearly Alive). Got the names for those?

Maybe I pay a little too much attention to the animation.

I could've sworn that in early showings of this episode at the scene when Baloo admonishes Kit he says "Son of Gun!" to Kit after being worried about him when Kit comes back into the plane from sky surfing in the dangerous weather.

But in the most recent viewing of the episode, Baloo is saying "Dog Gonnit!" instead. So if what I say ^ is true then they must have replaced the first dialog with the current one, probably to cut down on psydo swearing to keep it at a kid friendly show.

Isn't that episode on VHS? It could be possible to check.
It's possible you've overheard that, too.

I don't have the first run syndication nor the Disney Channel first airing of the episode; so I cannot say weither the line was changed or not. I will entertain the thought of it probably happening though and see it as an absolutely pointless change since Baloo (among others) has said "Son of a Gun" a number of times in the series with Flying Dupes being the last one.

The problem with toning down pusedo cussing is that Baloo slipped in a really nasty F-Bomb in Plunder and Lightning Part Four that Disney has yet to notice even in the DVD version. Also; the "Take God's Name in Vain" was done twice; once by Kit Cloudkicker (A Baloo Switcheroo) and once by Don Karnage in Ransom of The Red Chimp (and once in Rescue Ranger at the end of The Case of The Cola Cult). So I find the "Keep it a kid friendly show" thing to be silly when the horse on dark acts has left the barn and made about three revolutions around the world already.

Off Topic; but still relevant to the post: I watched Oscar Makes An Impression from Fish Hooks and the scene where Mr. Mussels comes into the marriage hall and calls Milo (who is dressed like the nobleman that is supposed to marry the Queen of England; if that makes any sense) out on it. What really surprised me was that Mussels calls Milo a b**** and it sounded downright intentional. I tried rewinding and replaying the footage to hear it better; but I'm surprised Disney's BS&P didn't have Mussels redo the line here because this would be in their right too. Kid friendly, the new Disney wishes it was.

Mmm, I rewatched the scene and I don't seem to notice any cut or line change. (or that means they totally re-dubbed Baloo's line)
By the way, was "Stormy Weather" one of the few episodes that aired before the official start of the show in September? (I know "I Only Have Ice For You" was one of them, but I think there were two others)

Also, how bad is "Son of a Gun"? Probably not much when compared to "Son of a B****" I guess.

Can you remind me which part of the episode it happens? If it really was the case, I think many people would have noticed already.

Since we're on the subject of psydo cursing, I would like to say that in Chip n Dale's Rescue Rangers, the s-word was slipped in by an off screen golfer struggling with the sandpit in the episode "Double O Dale" Another incident of psydo swearing is the episode "Good Times Bat Times" where Dale tell's the wana-bee witch to 'dust off!' before getting zapped. (of course we know what he was implying to say)
