Plot:

A small dog team gets lost in a snowstorm while racing the Iditarod. They somehow end up farther off course than they thought, and now they have to find their way back to the trail, and survive the Alaskan wilderness.

Connor breathed hard as he ran through the deep snow.


Sara closed her eyes towards the snow hitting her face.


Dan frowned slightly at the whiteness surounding them.

Laika's paws left deep prints in the snow, prints soon covered by many others made by the dogs behind her. She panted lightly from the small exertion, her tongue flapping slightly in the wind. A cold flake of snow hit it, and immediatly it withdrew back into her mouth. She shivered at the cold spot it left, but kept running, happy to be releasing some of her endless energy.

Snow surrounded Kiera, and she blinked her blue eyes, struggling to see past the thick, swirling flakes. Laika and Dan's outlines were blurred slightly from the relentless snow, and she ran, trusting them to know which direction they were going. She was blinded patway by the snow, and had no other choice than to have faith.

Cato was glad of his brawn as he ran, pulling the heavy weight of the sled. Sara hekped him bear the weight more than any of the other four dogs, whose jobs were mainly to lead and steer. He wasn't sure how Laika and Dan knew what was in front of their noses, due to the growing snowstorm. Soon we'll have a large blizzard on our hands, he thought, looking behind him at the musher briefly, wondering what he would do.

"Ho! Slow down there!" Grant called out. He held on tightly to the sled, hands numb, unable to see clearly. As the dogs slowed, he shivered, despite the thick furs covering his skin. A cold wind blew, and he shivered harder. He was sure that they couldn't make it much farther, not with the blizzard growing in strength. He would have to trust his dogs to find shelter.

"Um..." Laika said, looking around. She blinked away a flake of snow that tried to get into her eye. "No, I don't see anything," she said finally. "Maybe we should just keep walking, and see if we see anything then." She was cold, despite her thick fur, and wished nothing more than to lay in front of a fire, even if it meant being lazy, and not releasing energy.

"Are you all right?" Kiera asked, raising her voice to be heard over the howling wind. Connor looked ready to fall asleep then and there, and his steps were beginning to lag. She knew he was the youngest, and the weather and endless running was seeming to take a toll on him.

Cato tried to shrug, but it didn't work, due to the harness. "I don't know," he said, his voice louder than normal. Even though he raised his voice, the wind almost drowned it out.

Grant wasn't sure if his team could find shelter, all he knew is he was strangely warm, and beginning to become sleepy. Hypothermia, he thought groggily, the cold wind biting into his numb skin. He struggled to stay awake, and allowed the team to have free reign, knowing their instincts were sharper than his, ecspeccially in his dull, sleepy state. They would find shelter, hopefully.

"We need a cave, or at least a big boulder!" Laika shouted, having to continuosly raise her voice to be heard over the wind.

"We'll find shelter soon," Kiera said, not trusting his words.

"A fire would be nice, wouldn't it?" Cato asked, coming close to Sara's own thoughts unknowingly.

At that instant, Grant begin to sway, his vision blurring. He was tired, light-headed, groggy, and oddly warm.

Laika panted with exertion, putting all of her effort into going faster. Her muscles were taught and knotted from the strain, but somehow she managed to make it inside. Immediatly, she fell to the ground, exhausted mentally and physically.

Kiera was relieved when they crossed the threshold, into the cave. It was more for Connor's sake than her's. "You look horrible, Connor. Lay down and rest," she suggested.

"We should warm him up," Cato said, pointing with his muzzle towards Grant. "He's practically dead on his feet."

Grant somehow managed to release the dogs from the sled, then fell to the floor, slowly falling asleep. Dimly, he was aware of a warm, furry body next to his. The heat pulled him out of his dazed, hazy state, and he shivered, pressing his body closer to Cato.

Laika managed a small nod, padding over to Grant, Cato, and Sara, wanting the warmth, and wanting to help some.

"It's not because you're the youngest, or the weakest," Kiera said. "You may not have the endurance others do, but you have the biggest heart of anyone I know. ANd that's worth more in racing than you may think."

Cato nodded. "I think he's awake though."

Grant was too cold to move, and lay curled up against Cato and Sara. He felt another dog join him, and cracked open his eyes to see Laika. "Good dogs," he muttered weakly, curling up tighter as he was wracked with fervent shudders.

"Well, you're not your father. You're better than he is, Connor. You're friendly, sweet, and honestly one of the best racers on the team. Listen, you're not as strong, and don't last as long. But you're determined, fast, and smart. Okay?" Kiera asked.

The corner of the musher's lips turned up at the wet touch of Sara's tongue.
