Summer is probably the biggest season for Hollywood. The kids are out of school, meaning that less critical audiences are much more abundant. Taking advantage of this, companies spend hundreds of millions of dollars on marketing and releasing big budget effects extravaganzas without a hint of plot, script, coherence, or even acting. As mentioned before, younger audiences are much less discriminating when it comes to entertainment. This means that you can throw a bunch of fast-moving pretty colors up on screen, and they'll walk away satisfied. Case in point, last Summers biggest hit "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen": a loud, bloated, headache-inducing fiasco that was so awful that even the cast members hated it. How did such an awful piece of trash make so much money? By knowing its audience. Unless you were living under a rock last summer, chances are that every product you saw had the Transformers name slapped on it. While several adult-oriented industries (such as the now defunct General Motors) did this, the marketing bonanza was largely focused on kid-friendly things (Burger King toys, M&M's, 7-11 Slurpees, etc.).
This kind of marketing is effective in general, but more effective on kids. The strategy is to build the movie up as some kind of big event that everyone will have seen, and to advise the consumer that they don't want to be left out. Yes. When studios have little faith in their product, they resort to what is basically grade school peer pressure. Also, since kids can't drive and will most likely need an adult thanks to a PG-13 rating, this suckers the older crowd into it too. Convenient because the older you are, the more a ticket costs.

Some good points there Raging Balto. Not to mention the nostalgia some older viewers believe they're going to feel when they watch these crappy remakes of a somewhat dead franchise.

Like Avatar did? 'Cuz hell, that was all "you must not miss this!!" It bothered me greatly.

Lol it seems like EVERYONE hates Transformers 2 so much!!
But it kept my attention and it was really far from the worst movie I ever saw. Though the jokes were in bad taste and the cliches...and the plot holes....it was just wow. XD
Why do bad BOOKS make so much money too? *coughtwilightcough*
Bad music? Bad cartoons? Bad anime?
I'd say because the taste of the general public is..........bad. XD Or they haven't experienced anything good enough to compare it to, perhaps? Which is sad. >.<
But in the case of Transformers 2, I'm sure the build-up was the entire reason. It's Transformers so every fan will automatically go see it by default, not knowing that they will get a bad movie. Afterall, once you buy the tickets and watch the movie, you can't get a refund. Even despite Stan Marsh's quote: "Dude, this is America! And in America when something sucks, you're supposed to able to get your money back!!" LOL.

Bad movies do so well because our society wouldn't know a good movie if it bit them in the rear. Transformers 2 did so well because it had the two things that our society likes lots of violence and explosions and sexy women. I mean every scene megan fox is in it's always slowmo and she is usually wearing a tank top or something. It gets really boring after fifteen minutes.
