Now, I remember this has been mentioned in 2008, but during the whole of 2010 so far, I'm seeing more and more newbies joining. Some of these newbies have other experience with forums, and therefore get how this site works (how most of it works anyway.) However some newbies don't understand some things on AS, so I was thinking, why not have newbie helpers on the site to help them understand things?
I think mods have enough on their plates as it is, without having to push newbies in the right direction (if you get me) and they really deserve a break. I think having newbie helpers would help keep newbies under control, but they have to be members who wouldn't boss newbies around or be rude, as that really doesn't help people to take them seriously, and people may want to rebel as someone was rude to them.
So, what are your opinions one this? Would it be a good idea?

You mean like a mentor? We could always just have an adopt-a-newbie thread where the site explanations fail, or some finer points that are a bit hard to get the head around, the newbie asks the mentor about it?

That's pretty much the idea xD Whether it would work or not is another matter. Making a thread such as the one you described sounds like a pretty good idea.

I think what we were saying before was that we could have a special "mentors" group on the site/forums, where newbies can send them PM's asking for help. It's just for the sake of who's actually willing enough to do it.

Now this is a good idea. Having older members show newer members the ropes will not only make the newbies feel more welcome, it will decrease the amount of drama and bawwwwing that the newbies cause. You guys want volunteers? You got one right here; where do I sign up?

I do like this idea. Even though I'm a mod, I'd be willing to do this.

I'd love to be a mentor to a newb... I was one once. And it could be a little intimidating if you don't know what you are doing. Or the newbs that just post random things in the wrong topic or start a bogus topic can be annoying. So I'd be willing to take a newbie under my wing and show them the ropes here

I'm so glad you all think this is a good idea Mods and newbies really need to be cut some slack.

We also have a lot of tutorials, "featured" questions and other stuff to help the newcomers to fully understand every feature of Animation Source, so they have enough resources even without a mentor. Some new members don't ask questions, really. And a mentor would make them feel a bit more comfortable getting used to things.

My first thought, is that if you do see a noobie having problems on the site, be it with a simple issue or another member, you should take it upon yourself just as a fellow person (who was once also a noobie), to help them. However I see interesting points: Cobaltié wrote: Togo wrote: New members aren't stupid or anything: the site and the forums are very easy to use, and if they have doubt they can contact a moderator / administrator or use the questions section on the site. Some new members don't ask questions, really. And a mentor would make them feel a bit more comfortable getting used to things. And not to mention if they were having problems with another member here, mods could be to busy to take notice (even if they could do anything or not). A mentor would be someone they could go to and would listen. iWolf231 wrote: Cobaltié wrote: You mean like a mentor?
