This film is one of Tom Cruise's finest works within the last ten years. It is about an American military officer who comes to Japan with a tragic past, he is captured by a group of Samurai fighting against the Meiji Government. Through his experiences he is able to find peace. Now this film is based on a few real life events. The Boshin War-1868-1869 and the Satsuma Rebellion of 1877 which was lead by Saigo Takamori. The final battle in the film The Last Samurai is based on The Battle of Shiroyama, in which Saigo's remaining Samurai that numbered some 400 strong. They fought against the Imperial Army which had 30,000 troops. Saigo was killed during the fighting. His remaining followers around some 40 Samurai charged the Imperial Army's line and were wiped out by the Imperial Army's gatling guns. Also Jules Brunet wassn't the only westerner to fight in the Boshin War. Westerners like French Military Officers like Jules Brunet and Eugene Collache fought in Boshin Wars. Eugene Collache fought in the naval battle of Miyako dressed in Samurai attire. So what do you think of this film?
