It appears that 4 new comic books will be released for Darkwing Duck!!! As far as I can tell, this is the biggest news related to the DA series since the release of the DVDs. I don't really know Boom Studios though...They are releasing a lot of comics for Disney characters (Toy Story, Cars, other Mickey & co...)

Here's hoping that the same could apply to the other Disney Afternoon series. (including Talespin obviously...) But they probably chose Darkwing because that's a super-hero kind, which is the current trend (especially since the Marvel buyout), so I wouldn't be too optimistic for now.
I'll try to see if I can buy them, as I don't live in the US...

Well, well! I think that's a very good idea they've got there! Releasing comic books is probably the best solution to bring back these franchises : almost no risk financially (creating a comic costs way less than making a new series...) and it directly appeals to the core fans. I'm starting to like the guys at Boom Studios pretty much! Of course I haven't read them, but from the covers and interviews, they look very respectful of the original series.

Even if Disney were not the ones behind this, they still agreed and gave the licence to do it, so that means they are STILL interested in doing some money with them.

I'll be sure to buy all of them! Now we'll see if they sell successfully or not. If they do, we'll be sure to get more comics like this, and for other DA series. And who knows, maybe Disney will reconsider and re-air them, or maybe even better...
If they don't, well at least we will still have got a few more comics from these series, which is better than nothing.

Wait & see...

I've been meaning to reply to this post for a while...

When I read that new Darkwing Duck comics were going to be produced, I couldn't believe it. :o The Disney Afternoon is actually making a comeback in comic form! This is is nothing short of amazing! I guess it's happening partly because the writers and the other people pushing for it grew up watching the original episodes in the early 90's. I know at least one writer said that he was a fan growing up... Anyway, whatever the reason, I'm blown away by this development. Just a few short weeks ago, I would have thought there would be a better chance of me being crowned "Supreme Emperor of the Universe" than the Disney Afternoon making a comeback, however small it might be.

And not only Darkwing Duck, but DuckTales also... unbelievable! I can only hope they go down the list of great DA shows and add TS to the mix. I will definitely buy all the new comics when they become available! It is sad and a little disappointing that Disney itself isn't responsible for producing the comics (Boom! is licensing the property) but I will definitely support Boom! and I'm extremely glad the comics are being produced at all.

Actually, it may me a subtle blessing that Disney isn't producing the comics themselves, as I'm not sure they could or would give the old DA shows the respect they deserve. I feel the old shows are probably better left to someone who respects and appreciates them, like the old fans at Boom! Studios. Of course, I'm not saying that absolutely no one at Disney cares about the old DA shows, but it is likely there would be a lot less red tape at another studio than at Disney when it comes to producing anything good. (whereas “good” = “something not produced strictly to sell merchandise”)

So yeah, new DA comics... AWESOME!!! :D

A bit of more info (or not?) :

http://www.toonzone.net/forums/showpost ... stcount=97

Quote:
The Darkwing Duck story was mentioned (with pictures) today at the C2E2 comic show in Chicago. I attended the Boom Comics panel; they didn't give any new news about the series, however (and the pictures IIRC were the same ones we've already seen). Someone in the audience did ask about possibly seeing the rest of the classic Disney Afternoon shows revived as comics (namely Rescue Rangers and Tailspin), but IIRC the response on this was vague as well (something of a "we'll see" response, I think). Most of the Boom Comics focus was on their original series (Mark Waid was there to promote his series), though the Duck comics were also briefly plugged.

Sorry if this wasn't more helpful...

So yes...As I said, this will probably depends on the sales of the Darkwing Duck comics...
(At least I'm glad someone did ask that question though)

Here is a preview of the first 5 pages :

The art looks absolutely perfect, and (dare I say) even better than the old comics...

Maybe if the sales are good Disney will release the rest of the Duck Tales and DD episodes on DVD.
And if TS follows the same pattern I will be the happiest DA fan on earth :D

I would say, don't become TOO optimistic...As much as I would LOVE for this to happen, it's still a slim probability.
Actually it's all or nothing : either it makes very good sales and Disney will suddenly become interested in the property again, or it won't and they'll forget them for another few years.

Here's an interview with the writer of the comics, Ian Brill :

http://www.insidethemagic.net/2010/05/i ... ake-myler/

Quote:
Nineties animation was such a great time for Disney: all the Disney Afternoon stuff, Duck Tales, Tale Spin, and Darkwing Duck was right up there as one of the best shows.

Glad to see him mentioning Talespin as "one of the best shows" :) Ducktales is not 100% "nineties" though.

on certain properties, I think especially when it’s the first of a series, Disney will be a little bit more [of a] stickler about getting the characters exactly on model. They don’t see much deviation from it.

Curious, considering Disney do not seem to care much about these properties anymore AND they're the ones making horribly designed characters in their current animated TV series. (including the soon to come Peter pan pre-school series...) Yet they are worried about the characters getting off model??

It has been announced : the Darkwing Duck series is not a 4 issues mini-series anymore. It's now an ongoing monthly series!!!

Quote:
Disney & BOOM! Studios announced today that, in response to tremendously positive fan support, DARKWING DUCK will be offered as a monthly ongoing series only from Disney & BOOM! Studios! DARKWING DUCK was originally solicited as a four-issue miniseries, but enormous fan support has transformed the feathered crusader's limited series into an ongoing monthly series beginning this June!

To meet demand for DARKWING DUCK, BOOM! Studios will also be offering retailers an additional 3% reorder incentive for order increases until May 26, 2010 for orders received through Diamond Comics Distributor. Orders can also be made through Haven Distributors

"The fan response for Darkwing Duck has been amazing!” Says DARKWING DUCK writer, Ian Brill. “The fans wanted more, so we'll give them more! Not just more issues but more adventure and more humor. After the first story, which will have big changes for Darkwing and family, we're going to take the readers on an even crazier ride!"

Now there is no excuse to miss the long-awaited, much-requested return of your favorite… DARKWING DUCK. Once St. Canard’s greatest protector, Darkwing Duck was known the world over as “The Terror That Flaps In he Night.” In the first-four-issue arc, mysteriously, DW has not been seen or heard from in well over a year… and St. Canard finds that evil is once again on the rise. But when a nefarious plan threatens everyone, Darkwing Duck knows... it's time for the duck knight to return! “LET’S GET DANGEROUS!” with Disney & BOOM! Studios as one of Disney’s most beloved characters makes a comeback in his own not-to-be-missed original series!

I REALLY didn't expect that, BEFORE the release of a single Darkwing comic yet. I would have thought they would have considered the sales of the first issue before deciding something like this (If I were to run a company, I know I would do that)
I sure hope this announces good sales :) But will there be place for other DA series if they make it monthly? (well they already have many ongoing series, so I guess it's still a possibility...)

I'm still not too optimistic. It's not released yet, and they may have too high expectations now if many people requested it but not too many actually buy them.
And EVEN if Darkwing Duck sells well, there's no guarantee they will do try it with TS.

AWESOME! Of course, you have to be cautiously optimistic... The original TS comic "series" only went for seven issues, so DWD could conceivably suffer the same fate. (I certainly hope not though!)

Here's a little bit of info from one of the Boom Studios editor :

Quote:
Just an update for those who are interested...DuckTales is currently slotted for eight issues, running through UNCLE SCROOGE #392-399, with something very special planned for the milestone issue #400!

Oh, and you may have ALSO heard that Darkwing Duck is now officially an ongoing. The first arc wraps up in issue #4 in September, and leads directly into issue #5 shipping in October. The Disney Afternoon is BACK!

Well it would be back IF Chip & Dale RR and Talespin were included

Sales figures!

http://www.icv2.com/articles/news/17860.html

Darkwing Duck sold 6300 copies. That's good for a Disney comics (Boom! Studios's 3rd best selling one since they've got the Disney licence) and the current economic context, though not excellent either.
Will that be enough to ensure more DA stuff? I guess it will depend on how well it continues to sell. (But they would be foolish not to do more, IMO)

Uncle Scrooge#392 with Ducktales isn't listed, because unfortunately, comics sales are globally high this month, so it sold less than 4500 copies but we can't know precisely how much or if it gost a boost from the Ducktales theme.

Well... DD is Boom's 3rd best selling comic book for the month... Not bad!
