WOW! This is so helpful! I've been looking for a tutorial for shading for such a long time! Thank you so much! ^^

Well actually, shading should never be black. Light reflects off the environment (Another note: Black absorbs light.) and the environment is, for example, a green forest, then the shading should be green. If it's exposed to the sky, typically the shading should be blue. (Usually happens in day pics, even if it's a forest pic. Normally if I'm drawing a more open forest picture, like a park, I shade with blue-green) If it's a sunset, warmer colours should be used. Etc.
The method is good, though.

Sardonyx wrote: It doesn't actually say where the darker and the lighter bits are supposed to be =/ Two words: Light Source & Anatomy. Shades are used to determine volume of an item/creature etc. It takes heck a lot of practice to get it right. Most people make the huge mistake of adding shades around the line art. Which is wrong. Possibly you add the highlights there (depending on the light source, again). What can I say. Practice. Look for tutorials. Look at GOOD artists' pages (don't judge 'good' by their number of pageviews/faves btw).
