_______________________

It was early November in the small town of Wallace, and a chilling breeze blew through the streets and back alleys, tossing leaves of brown, red, and yellow into every nook and cranny of the buildings. Wallace, though having a population less than 1000, always seemed to be full of life, either with the town workers busily doing their jobs to keep things maintained, tourists scavenging the many small shops on main street searching for the perfect souvenir, or children getting dropped off by the school bus.

Besides the humans, there was an ever growing community of dogs living throughout the town. Though a few were strays, most were house pets trained enough to be left to wander the streets, then return home for nighttime or meals.

Ranger was one of these dogs. He was a 5 year old Border Collie with sleek black fur, with contrasting white patches on his muzzle, underbelly and paws. Though he appeared to be only these two colors, in certain light, dark reddish-brown patches on his back and tail would be visible. Ranger was a smart dog, and he knew Wallace well. Apparently using superior dialect and knowing all the best places for hiding, food, and fun made the other dogs look up to him.

Ranger now trotted down a side street leading uphill to the town's center. He enjoyed the feeling of the cold breeze on his face, ruffling through his fluffy fur and he walked. As he rounded a corner, he glanced across the road, seeing a familiar canine face peeking out from behind a few stacked crates. With a soft bark, he made his way over to greet his friend.

Tally heard a familiar bark, and her floppy ears pricked. She barked a greeting, seeing Ranger's black and white face. Her eyes lit up, her tail beginning to wag slowly as she padded over to him. She smiled, her light yellow pellt shining softly in the morning sun, which was reflected warmly in her deep brown eyes. Her thick tail was beginning to blur slightly, and she stopped in front of him, happiness coursing through her as she came close to her friend.

"Hey Ranger," she greeted, her normally soft voice filling the morning air, easily audible, as the town was still quiet. A cool breeze ruffled her short fur and Ranger's longer pelt, rejuvinating her along with the warm rays that cut through the autumn air chill.

Ranger smiled happily at Tally.
"Hey Tally!," he replied, "absolutely beautiful day today, isn't it. I can hardly believe it's already time for the town festival again."

"I can't either!" Tally agreed. "THe town festival is always...I don't know, so...festive," She gave a small grin as she said that, letting the border collie know she meant it as a joke.

Ranger chuckled.
"Quite honestly, I just like it for the food. Let the humans have their party, the food is what I enjoy."
He paused for a moment.
"You know that this is supposed to be the 400th season that this town has been around? Old Ira told me last time I went to go see him. Poor old coot. He never does leave his home on the mountain anymore. He just sits there doing nothing."
Ranger looked at Tally quizzically. "You think we should go try to bring him down so that he can join in the fun?

Tally laughed. "We could try, but I think he would have to be dragged down here. As you said, he never leaves his home," she said, a smile tugging at her mouth. "I thinkwe should just leave him."

Ranger made a face. "mmmm...I guess we should, I'm just worried about him. You know he's about 65 seasons old now. This could be the last town festival for him."
Ranger started walking, gesturing for Tally to follow.
"I think he's losing him mind, though. He also told me something about the end of days and how it is upon us. What do you make of that?"

"Hmmm," Tally said, lost in thpught as she pondered it, her brown eyes losing focus for a moment. "I don't know. Maybe he's saying that the world is going to end," she said, not really serious. "Or maybe he's talking like a lunatic," she added with another grin. SHe followed Ranger, the two dogs padding side-by-side companionably.

Ranger laughed. "Huh, yeah, maybe in like a billion seasons."
Ranger started to walk faster now.
"Come on, lets see if they are setting up for the parade, yet. Maybe we'll find the others there."
Ranger chuckled again. "Plus, I'm hungry. Gotta fatten myself up if the world is supposed to end, huh?"

Tally laughed. "I'll fatten myself up too then," she said, smiling. Her brown eyes danced with happiness as she began to head towards the grounds where they always set up the parade.

The two dogs were just passing the police station when they were greeted by a scraggly looking, over excited Harrier named Tucker. He was a stray, living on the streets of Wallace since his owners abandoned him while on vacation in the town. He was young, being only a few seasons out of puppyhood, and was pure white except for his paws and upper face, which were a deep walnut. Half of his tail was also missing. He claimed he lost it while fighting a pack of five rabid cats over a bucket of fried chicken, but in reality he had lost it when a mother raccoon attacked him when raiding the school's dumpster, causing him to relocate his home from there to under the police station's rear steps.
He now was jumping excitedly from side to side in front of the two dogs.
"Hey Ranger, hi Tally!

Ranger laughed at the hyperactive stray.
"Easy there Tucker, they might think you have rabies or something."

Tucker stopped jumping but still had his stub of a tail wagging frantically from side to side.
"You hear what happened earlier! No!? Well you know that big, giant, big floating thing the people fly during the parade. It got stolen. That's right! Some big mean person took it right from the mayors office and now it's gone. The police are trying to find out who did it, but I think I already know. Do you know? Because I think I know!"

Tally struggled to make out what the wired stray had said, the words jumbled together from the speed at which he had spoken them in. "Woah. The floaty thing? It got stolen? By who?" she asked, most of the sentence a question, as she wasn't sure that's what he had said.

Ranger understood a little bit better.
"Okay, so if I understand correctly, the hot air balloon got stolen from the mayors office? Now you know that's crazy, Tuck. No one human could steal that big thing."

"But you know who I think did it?"
Ranger sighed, putting a paw to his face.
"would you please settle down and talk slower. Jeeze your giving me a headache and the party hasn't even started yet."

"It was the human called Mika!"
Ranger scoffed.
"I think I know whats going on here."
He turned to Tally, who still looked mighty confused by the hyper Tucker.
"Mika was that bum that was living under the highway exit ramp. He disappeared last spring and nobody's seen him since. I think the police dogs are playing a trick on Tucker. You know how gullible he is."

Understanding showed on Tally's face as Ranger spoke. She let out a small laugh. "Probably," she agreed. "NO offense Tuck," she added hastily.

A german sheperd known as Kali walked up, excitement bright in her almond eyes.

"Hey Ranger, Tally. Adn Tucker," she added. "Guess what I just heard?" she asked, her tail wagging with excitement.

"What is it?" Tally asked.

"The big floaty thing, ya' know, the one in the parade, it got stolen! THey say it was by Mika, but I think that's nonsense. What do you think?" she asked.

Ranger groaned.
"Oh, not you too. It's a hoax. Mika hasn't been around in at least 2 seasons. Plus, it takes 4 humans to even carry that thing."

Tucker had calmed down enough now to talk at a reasonable pace. He tilted his head at Ranger.
"How can you be so sure?"

Ranger responded quickly, with a hint of annoyance in his voice.
"Because it doesn't make sence. This story has Dodge and Roscoe written all over it. You know those two police dogs like to mess with you Tuck. Why do you always fall for their stupid stories?"

Tucker raised a paw.
"Well, I....I....I don't know. They always seem like they are telling the truth."
