These are always neat to see but, I would hate to see their electricity bill.
I would also hate to be the one putting these up or taking them down. Putting them up takes about a month or more to do. I don't know about taking them down though.
I know how these light fests are run, as I've scene these types of things on TV a few times. All of these lights are hooked up to one or more computers that controls the lights. It's pretty complex stuff.
And no, to answer your question. My parents haven't done anything to this extent. As I said above, to many lights run up the electricity bill. That's something my parents have to watch right now. All they did this year was put lights around the house, and put up a metal tree that has lights. Along with some red and green light-up Candie canes that surround the tree.
