Many many years ago, when only trees and forest spread over the land, four wolves gathered together and decided on what must be done to let their kind live on earth. One wolf, Luna, became the moon spirit - enchanting each wolf who howled at night a great strength. The second wolf, Terra, became the spirit of the earth - giving each wolf who was born on her soil loyalty and pride to their wolf heritage. The third wolf, Sol, became the spirit of the sun - shining down on ever pelt that glistened beneath his touch and warming the hearts of many of her decedents. The fourth wolf, Lupin, stayed to teach the way of the wolf to his kind. These four were known as the first Great Wolves, passing down their rules and customs to each wolf born on earth. They accompanied the skies with stars to shine down on those who got lost in the night and to glisten brightly to show their wolves that their ancestors had would never abandon them.

Sitka has lived by this story and had complete faith in his ancestors since he was a pup. He never doubted that his ancestors were always watching him, making sure the balance of the world was never disrupted. But soon he realizes he was all wrong. His life is about to change and nothing will ever be the same again. Though he feels as long as the stars are shining, he has faith. But what happens when one of the stars fall?

Sitka padded through the grassy plain. The long blades of grass that had turned golden during the summer now where lightly glazed with a thin sheet of ice. Snow fell in tiny snowflakes that dappled Sitka's pelt and he sneezed. His stomach growled and his left paw ached so badly. Earlier that day, he had tried to hunt an elk by himself but was turned on by the mighty bull. His ribs ached painfully where the bull elk's mighty antlers had jabbed him and sent him soaring through the air. Sitka's paw had been smashed on the rock and had finally stopped bleeding. He lay down on the soft grass and rested on his side. He was so hungry. He had not eaten in three days, a long time for a wolfling like himself. The last thing he had eaten was only a cold carcass of a young calf already gnawed at by crows. His ribs showed and Sitka leaned forward to lick his bloody paw, panting from the effort of crossing the field.

Sitka pulled himself to his feet and looked at the silver wolfess. "Hello." He said, leaning awkwardly to one side so that all his wait didn't rest on his injured paw. He shook the falling snow from his pelt and sneezed again. His stomach growled loudly and he lowered his ears in embarrassment. "My name is Sitka." He added as he fixed his gaze on the silver wolf's golden eyes.
