There have been many cancelled projects about a Roger Rabbit sequel over the time, though they never saw the light.
But this time, it's for real! The original writers are currently on the work, and Robert Zemeckis confirmed it.

http://www.mtv.com/movies/news/articles ... tory.jhtml

What's happening to Disney? Are they finally getting on the right tracks? Or just a false alarm? Of course, I know they're probably not the only company involved, but still. Something's happening, we would have never seen projects like that a few years ago.

Seems like it's not fresh news though, it was announced in spring, although I only discovered it now. (and I'm sure most of you too)

I'm still worried what they mean by "new digital tools like performance-capture technology" : is it going to be CGI animated? (which would be terrible, considering Roger Rabbit was originally about bringing *classic* cartoon characters into one film, with live action.) It's likely though, considering the recent films Zemeckis did (The Polar Express and the about-to-come Christmas Carol) Maybe partly, 2D characters could be animated 2D and the newest would be CGI. Would we be seeing something like Donald and Shrek in the same film?

I know they usually like to add in the mannerisms of actors into characters both 2D and 3D but, "new digital tools like performance-capture technology" is a bit frightening. I think Roger Rabbit was the fusion between animation and live action and the animation seemed to have more depth and be almost 3D because of it, but anything is possible now. I've seen the switch from 2D to 3D happen within a series of movies before, hopefully that won't be the case though. Maybe this project will go over well (With Disney you know it will have to budget to be anything the writers think up).

If this becomes another "Garfield", "G-Force" or "Chipmunks" live action thingy, I kill them. I would even rather have full CGI than *that*.

Oh God! I didn't even think about those movies...but yeah lets hope this isn't another "Scooby Doo".

Yes, add the Scooby Doo live movies to the list, and you'll also be able to add the Berenstain Bears too :

http://www.usatoday.com/life/movies/new ... 3_ST_N.htm

Why do they have to keep destroying their franchises like that? Would it have been so difficult to make a 2D full length film instead? (The Simpsons film has been very successful, and it was 2D - thank god!)

The Berenstain Bears have existed as 2-D illustrations for so long, they are also getting "a slight makeover to bring it into the three-dimensional style, but we'll embrace the core design elements," Bostick says. "It'll be a slightly modern spin on their look."

More info :

Quote:
Robert Zemeckis told MTV that the Who Framed Roger Rabbit sequel will feature motion-capture performances, an animation process he has used extensively over the past several years (and in tomorrow’s A Christmas Carol). “I wouldn’t use it for the cartoon characters, because I think they should stay two-dimensional because that’s what — I wouldn’t dimensonalize Roger”, he said. But the human characters are apparently fair game: “All the other characters that [the cartoons] would sort of have fun with would be magnificent in performance capture technology”.

Aaaah, that's a relief. Though that means the "live" actors will be made with CGI - not sure what's the point, but...(I honestly didn't find that Polar express gained anything by doing that instead of just live actors)

That's reassuring, but I think CGI might be cheaper than live action because you don't actually have to film in any locations or on any sets you just animate it all in a studio, at the very least I would suspect this will cut the needed resources for the film.

Regardless I'm glad to hear that this film is going to be made with at least some consideration of the original in mind, hopefully this will be a far cry from the DTV sequels Disney was so fond of a few years ago.

You're kidding me, right? Gah, I loved those books as a kid! I even liked the videos they made (I didn't see too many, but they were pretty good) and the computer games! But... live-action? Give me a break...

And getting back on topic, I really hope this doesn't go through... the original was all right, but I have a feeling it's going to turn out to be terrible, or, worse, like Cool World, a complete ripoff of the same idea of 2-D animation mixed with live action at the same time, but 50x worse, and without any memorable characters (except a not so good performance by a much younger Brad Pitt).

Sorry, but Rodger Rabbit doesn't need a sequel. It really doesn't...

Now this is my sort of post!

Anyway, my bet is 5 brownie points that Jessica Rabbit will be "dumbed down" or taken out completely so Disney can keep everything "kid-friendly".

I'm just worried Disney is going to ruin it.

I didn't think Roger Rabbit needed a sequel, I hope it doesn't flop so badly though.

I agree that Roger Rabbit dosnt need a sequeal. It'll just get ruined. I hate it when they make pointless sequels for classic movies many years after.

Yet nobody complains when they make sequels after sequels to CGI films : Shrek 4, Cars 2, Ice age 3, Toy Story 3 etc...
Not very logical.

Actually I'm extremely against the existence of Shrek 4, Cars 2, and all of the Ice age sequels. In my eyes CGI films are the same as live-action and 2D animation, sometimes a film does not need a sequel and very rarely does a sequel surpass the original. Shrek 2 was one of those few CGI films that I feel recaptured the magic of the original but the third film was pointless and a fourth is clearly an attempt to milk the franchise. The ending of Cars was fine and with all the Pixar shorts about it the film really doesn't need a full sequel. I am excited about Toy Story 3 though...I can't lie.

I think it's because the CGI films lack that intimate charisma of the hand drawn stuff. It just comes off as cheesier and less classic, I guess. Also, there was no 20 year hiatus in between them.

I dunno, of what you listed above I only liked the original of two of them and have no desire to see any of the sequels to any of them.
