Here is a tutorial on the basics of vectoring. I did this on PSP X2, so anyone who uses a diff program, this might help a little.

PSP is similar to Photoshop.

So here goes:

First: You need to make a vector layer. first: go to layers: new vector layor then press OK. now you are ready to vector.

Now, select the pen tool:

Then, you will see the pen tool options in the toolbar above the image editor.

Here is what the options mean:

Now, that you know what that is, we will go to the fill tools:

One is the border line, the other is the fill, here is a screenshot of the pallate:

Now, we will go on to the image. Create a new image. use any dimention.

First, when you are on the insert tool, click anywhere on the image. a little box will apear. this is called a NODE

Image

then, you will make another node. but this time, click, hold the mouse clicker down. Move the mouse, a line will appear. stretch it to curve it, to where you like it.

Image

Now do the same thing with another line. Opposite to your other line.

Now we will learn to join 2 lines together. First, drag the node from one line to the other end node of the other line.
Your cursor should say JOIN. when it does, release the mouse clicker, it will come together.

Now join the opposite side.

Now we will think of the fills.

Change the fill where the border is black and the fill is white:

And now disable fill, and the fill will be transparent:

Now press the button again, to enable to fill again.

Next, we will think about objects. Arranging them. you have 4 choices in the menu:

Bring to top: Brings object to top
Move Up: Moves the object up one.
Move Down: Moves the object down one.
Send to Bottom: Sends the Object to bottom.

This is for the currently selected object.

Here is the main one being sent to top:

After you join, you can still edit your curve here just select one of the nodes, you will see a line. Drag the line and it will move the curve:

Anyway this is the end of the tutorial! WHen you know this stuff, this will get you into the real vectoring!

Basics always need to be known first.

Hope this tutorial helps!
