I didn't get to get Aspen, a Siberian husky, from a shelter before she was adopted. Instead, I'm thinking of another docile family pet -- Ball Pythons. However, I've recently discovered that there are multiple kinds of Balls. Ranging from the " common" Ball, Mojave Ball, Spider Ball, Carpet, Blood Ball, and a range of Pastel Ball Pythons. I absolutely love these snakes and I grew up with them (my stepfather had a Common female who was about 6-7 feet before she died of old age). Despite their being snakes, they are much unlike what people think. The old female that died a couple years back was tossed around, had her head put in my stepfather's mouth (ew), sat on, layed down with, etc. The only time she'd ever bitten was when she was pre-shedding (or shedding), or hungry. Even then, she seemed to only like biting my stepfather. My sister currently has three -- two Commons ("Weed" and "Tari") and a Mojave ("Cocoa"). They're talking about getting a fourth, a Spider Ball (at which point I'll probably coax them into giving it to me LOL). Keep in mind: My sister has 2 kids, ages 2 and 3, who love to play with these snakes. And an ex-husband who's animal-retarded. This snake, as well, as been dropped, flipped around, put in people's mouths, tossed in the air, etc. We've never had a biting incident, even when she was hungry or shedding. So, I ask you: What's your favorite kind of snake? Have you ever owned a snake? Or, are you afraid of snakes (and why, if you don't mind)?

Thing with snakes is that you often need to get them out and handled in order to "tame" it. One would think snakes of any kind prefers not to be touched, but the truth is that if you leave them be, they'll become more and more insociable. I have a red corn snake I left at home, and since I was really the only one that played with it, it's taken to lunging at anyone's fingers (but mine. ^^) that entered the cage.
Most kinds of snakes need to be vertically challenged, which means the cage needs to be tall. But I know I don't need to tell you how to take care of a snake because I'm sure you've done your homework, Kira. :]
I never had a ball python of any kind, but from what I can tell you from having a corn snake, I can attest to them being very docile and gentle creatures, given that you treat them respectively. Obviously not a pet you can leave with the kids, then leave them be, like a dog, but my corn snake is generally playful and enjoys wrapping himself around my arms and poking its head into places it shouldn't. XD

My recommendation - don't get one unless you're going to make sure to stay on track with feeding, or unless you won't be squeamish if you have to blend up its food. If snakes don't eat for 4 weeks, they often have to be force fed, and the only way to do it is to liquefy the food, intubate the snake, then slide the liquefied food down the tube.
But, if that doesn't bother you, then go for it ^.^ I can even provide you with a ball python care sheet, similar to the ones I have for birds, that can be requested in that Got Birds? topic.
