Given the fact that, after Balto and Nava part company, Aniu appears, speaks with Balto, and then howls and disappears in a swirl of ectoplasmic mist. This is just after we see Aleu with the wolves...where Muru appears at her feet in a swirl of ectoplasmic mist, howls and then disappears again in another misty swirl. There is a very apparent connection between these two images. It's meant to connect the dots that have been built throughout the movie...that every animal which appears to either Balto or Aleu (or both at the same time) is, in fact, Aniu taking some form. They all disappear from view the same way as Aniu does. And we are reinforced in that notion because we see Aniu watching Balto from a distance after his encounter with the "wolverines"...where she appears and then disappears in the same manner. There is a consistency and an obvious message and about who and what Aniu is. And it wraps up nicely in the end.
That makes lots of sense. I agree with that. It isn't just a coincidence that they happened together. that makes it clear that both of them are connected.
Also: The whole thing of both of them appearing in places, tell us they are related.
The thing is: For Balto: Aniu is her wolf self, For Aleu, She is the Field Mouse. Its to relate to each character. Also, a mouse would be more comforting to someone who doesn't like being a WOLF than a wolf. So they wanted to do that.
Pretty much sums it up.
