I may be able to answer this. But while I can't name anything specifically, I'll name MMOs I know.
Runescape, as you know, is a completely free flash game. That is unless you want the massive amount of membership extras at $5 per month. Most of the time, it's just too simple. *click, click, click*
World of Warcraft, a great, massive, and popular MMO. Also happens to be my cup of tea. Being able to access all of it's content and being able to have enough time to explore and experience all of it does get expensive. But I think, for what you get when compared to other MMO's of similar caliber, it is so worth it. (Little tip to those who want to start: Get the Battlechest. $40 gets you WoW Classic, WoW BC, and guides for both, which is about $50-60 value. Those with patients and luck can try to time it with a sale holiday like Black Friday. Got my BattleChest at Game Stop on Black Friday for half price. ($20, same price as the Classic game alone))
Phantasy Star Online Ep 1 & 2, and older game that was first grasping the concept of MMO, though the MMO part was essentially optional to the single player (which was very similar anyways). Unfortunately, the online servers are being shut down one-by-one depending on system (starting with the older ones first). At the time, I believe it was free to play online.
Phantasy Star Universe, same concept as before and has been improved. I actually don't know a whole lot of this game anymore, but I do know is that you don't have to play online MMO style as it has it's own written story for single player. I think I remember see that there is, like WoW, a subscription fee.
Phantasy Star Zero, I believe this one, like Phantasy Star Ep 1 & 2, can't be considered a true MMO by today's standards. Since it hasn't come out in the states yet, I believe this DS game is a good, free online alternative to MMO's.
Final Fantasy XI, if there was a game similar to WoW, this one would be it. Probably just as large and as epic as WoW, this gae has a subscription fee. I believe there's a monthly fee as well as, like, a dollar per character fee. Which I guess isn't too bad considering that you can switch classes/jobs and retain what you've already learned in-game (as opposed to being stuck with one upon creation of the character). One of the things that highlight this game is that is uses a complex, active translation system between players. You could actually be playing with a player in Japan speaking in his own language while you speak yours, and you'll still understand each other just fine.
Guild Wars, this game might be what you're looking for. You'll need to buy it, but that's the only time you'll spend money. I like to think of this as a simpler WoW, but still very complex game. Also, Guild Wars 2 is in development now. That'll be it for now. I don't want to keep harping on like this....unless you want me to keep pulling games from memory.
