If you hadn't heard the news yet... http://www.marketwatch.com/story/disney-to-acquire-marvel-entertainment-2009-08-31-9050Again, excuse me for being pessimistic, but that doesn't seem like good news. Marvel universes are very far from Disney ones, the two were very different companies which were profitable. What good reason are they doing that, except of course for the big $ one? I think Disney is forgetting more and more about what made their success. Disney had never been about buying company after company. Why don't they focus on their OWN franchises and characters?? They have hundred of good ones totally unused, and yet they want to milk the franchises from OTHER companies... I don't mind collaborations with other companies, like what happened with the Kingdom hearts games for example - but BUYING? Nonsense. The only thing I hope is that this will bring them money to consider making more "risky" projects like traditional animated films...But I don't think that's what they have in mind. I'm not even sure if they believe in a potential success for Princess & the frog.

Now add to that High school musical, Hannah Montana and all the other teen-TV stuff. Add Disney XD and its series. Add the crappy pre-schoolers TV shows. Add their "dark" live movies. Add their awful Tinker bell 3D DTV films. And finally, add Marvel.
No, definitely, there isn't anymore Disney into that. In fact I shouldn't mind about the DTV sequels (which they stopped...) and their Pixar/CGI films, because that's the closest things remaining to that spirit - yet still very far... It's just a company like the others, nowadays. They've just lost their identity because they want to make products for "everyone". (yet, that's exactly what they were doing BEFORE...)
The scariest thing is that most comments I have seen about this were positive ones...I surely hope they're right. At best, nothing will change.

I'm not even sure if they believe in a potential success for Princess & the frog. I view this as a positive purchase. Marvel comics is made up of comic artists, animators, and video game studios. Now Disney has all of this and I don't think they needed to acquire more but Marvel has always done thing a little contrary to normal convention and succeeded and I think it's that spirit Disney wishes to capture. Disney's sub-par TV station and music studio are attempts to appeal to a high yield audience who accept this as appropriate content but Disney/Pixar movies and the last few feature animated films are still high quality films. I'm hopeful that Marvel and Disney will be more or less partners as opposed to simply making a studio out of the company so we'll see things like a Disney/Marvel video game or TV show series based off of the Marvel comics characters as opposed to a Kingdom Hearts scenario where things mix. I think things will be better for both companies in the end, Disney is a huge company with a large number of resources and this buy simply increases the resources they have at there disposal. I really don't think we'll be seeing a Marvel Vs. Disney game or movie any time soon or at all even.

I'm frankly surprised, I really dislike the idea somewhat. Tho take a look at DC Comics, it was bought by Warner Brothers and so far it hasn't being a mess. Actually WB has handled DC pretty well, it has aired many TV series about the superheroes, and let's not forget about The Dark Knight, and Watchmen. steet wrote: Marvel universes are very far from Disney ones This is what worries me, WB always had a varied audience, from kids to adults, from G to R ratings. As an example; Watchmen isn't precisely a "family movie". While Disney has more of a general audience for everyone. Many of the Marvel heroes (and stories) are pretty dark, which makes wonder how will Disney cope with those facts. My thoughts -Kepz

The scariest thing is that most comments I have seen about this were positive ones...I surely hope they're right. At best, nothing will change. As the webmaster, you shouldn't break the no swearing rule. It's unfair. And what is wrong with Tinker Bell? Her movie was beautiful! It was so funny and the fairies are so cute! I think I'm gonna cry! I think the larger point Steet was trying to make is that instead of trying their best to make a full length feature film made for theaters Disney simply used as few resources as necessary to cash in on one of their characters. DTV movies are always give a lower budget than any theater released film so they tend to be of less quality than their more expensive counterparts. what Steet truly wants is for Disney to stop trying to make a cheap buck every time they see the opportunity and return back so simply concerning themselves with quality animation and live action films that are the ground work for the entire Disney company (or at least that's what I gather from most of his posts on this topic). Personally I enjoy Disney's old movie's as well but I'm far less concerned with a return to the old Disney, I enjoy some of the expansion in all directions but I do agree that the swarm of DTV sequels weakened many of the old franchises as a whole (some were good but they were few and far between) and I'm glad they seem to have stopped for now. On the topic of the Disney/Marvel buyout I'm glad to hear Disney is leaving the movie franchises alone until the contracts run out at least and it shows they can at least leave a good thing alone. I don't know where this will leave Marvel years down the road but hopefully they'll still be the same comic book giant they've always been, but that is for the future.

No, the thing I really meant to say is that I don't like this "categorizing" of what they make.
Princesses and Tinker bell's stuff are for girls, Marvel or Aaron Stone are for boys... High school musical, Camp rock are for teenagers...
How would they make something like The Lion King nowadays? They wouldn't - because it doesn't fit any special category, because it's for EVERYONE. THIS is what they've lost. They prefer to make thousands of specific products instead of focusing on several that everyone would enjoy. Do you really think that Walt Disney made Snow White specifically for girls, or to do Cinderella to start a brand for girls?...
Of course, they're not the only company doing that - they all do. And it's not new either, but it's getting worse.
I admit that CGI theater films is another matter - which is also why I have said they're the only thing left that can still be considered "Disney"...
Oh, and sorry if I used an insult - remember that I'm not english and not always sure if the words I'm using are the most suitable ones...

I think now I finally see what Steet's talking about, this paradigm shift Disney took sometime in the late 90's early 00's era that brought about the Disney DTV sequels and the change in content because even Disney channel underwent a makeover to become the channel it is now. Disney is trying to segregate it's intellectual property's into different segments so that they can view each sector of growth and make one adjustment once things start to slip which is a purely financial move and I can now see who much it's hurt the overall quality of so many of it's recent endeavors. And now I see the issues that could be caused by this recent buying of Marvel will only prove to be another opportunity for more of this internal separating to occur further hurting the overall quality of Disney products and perhaps even bringing down Marvel in the process, which really is a shame because I'm a huge fan of the X-men franchise and the Marvel Vs. game series that Capcom put out. It's very unfortunate that this has occurred with a company like Disney that has so many great idea's and the resources to make whatever they want tangible. http://blogs.starbulletin.com/otakuohana/?p=389A funny article on the issue all three scenario's are highly unlikely but I would like to see a "Marvel vs. Capcom vs. Disney vs. Pixar vs. Ghibli vs. Squenix: New New NEW Age of Heroes"

I really don't like Marvel, (More of a DC fan) but NO. Marvel is more....teenager/adult, Disney if for kids, I feel for comic fans. I thought the Disney faries were rather lame....along with a few other things they have made, Ok, a lot, why ruin Marvel? (The Disney Farie thing is my own opinion, don't go crying over it)
