"Kenya, get out of the way!"
Bang!
"No..."
"No!""Kenya!"
The black females head snapped around from the window. A tiny crystal swung on a silver thread, casting a tiny rainbow over the females face when the light hit it. Behind her, looking rather anoyed, a large brown male stood. A black collar hung around his neck, and a big gold badge was clipped to it.
"Yes, sir?" the female asked.
The male sighed, his eyes rolling upwords. "Didn't you hear a word I just said?"
Kenya shook her head.
Drat, I let my mind wander again she scolded herself.
The male shook his head. "I said, I want you to do the morning patrol. And make sure you go by the old Jalker Mansion."
It was Kenya's turn to roll her eyes. "With all due respect, sir, that run down house has been empty for years." she said.
"Check it anyway. Someone reported loud noises comming from there earlier this morning."
The black female rose to her paws, the white wing on her gold chain swinging as she did so. "Yes, sir." she replied as she slipped out the door.
"I told you, call me Ryker." the male called after her.
Kenya flicked her ear, signaling she had heard him.
Ryker chuckled to himself as the door clicked shut. "Ah, what am I going to do with her?"
----------------
The crisp cold Montana air was refreshing to most, but not Kenya. Her ears pricked and alert, she kept her eyes locked on the path in front of her. Tall, willowing grass grew on eaither side of the path, showing that no one had tended to it for many years.
"Must have been some strays pulling a prank." Kenya mutterd.
A soft breeze blew through the grass, making it wave and dip. The black female turned around. "No point in--" she froze.
Right where she had been about to step, a large pawprint was in the dirt. Off to the left, there was a patch of grass that had been trampled down. Titling her head to the side, Kenya carefully went to exzamine it. It wasen't just a patch of grass, it was an entire path. And it went up the hill toward the Jalker Mansion.
Thats strange, she thought, frowning. Her sense alerted, the black female slowly started making her up to the house.
The grass growing on the hill was taller and thicker then that in the field, and Kenya could barely see through it, much less over it.
"How are you suposse to get to the dang house without getting lost?" she mutterd.
When the path opened up, Kenya saw that the grass all around the house was trampled. And broken glass was everywhere.
Carefully, Kenya made her way to the door, avoiding stepping on an glass. And listening for any sign of movment inside.
The door was open ajar, making Kenya even more suspicious. Something was deffenitly wrong.
Muscles tense, Kenya nudged the door open father. The rusted hinges creaked at the movment.
Then Kenya felt her heart hit her stomach.
The sight was terrifying. Red pawprints scatter the floor. Red streaks were slashed across the walls.
Kenya's eyes widened as she looked around. The sight would have shocked anyone, but that wasen't the worst of it.
Kenya slowly went up to one of the red streaks on the walls and sniffed it cautiously. She recoiled as a horrid scent filled her nostrils.
Blood.
But where had all this blood come from, the black female thought as she looked around. She saw a trail of blood leading into the next room. Cautiously, she followed it. The next room also had blood on the walls and floor, but this time, Kenya saw where it had come from.
In the center of the room, lay the bodies of three dogs. Two males and a female. One of the males looked younger then the other two, and had markings and colors simalur to both.
They must have been related, Kenya thought as she circled their bodies. Each dog bore large gashes in various places, suggesting they had tried to fight, but had been out numberd.
"Must have been alot of them." she murmerd. Not only did the number of pawprints suggest it, but the number of gashes as well.
A scuffling noise made the black female whip around. Nothing was behind her, but the noise came again. Upstairs.
Kenya made her way to the staircase slowly. More pawprints, but some were smaller then the others. About halfway up the stairs, there was a splash of blood that sugestead a struggle.
The noise was loud now, and Kenya followed the pawprints into one of the rooms. The noise was comming from one of the closests.
Kenya made her over, and nudged the door open.
A small pup looked up at her with ice blue eyes round with fright. The pups cream and black fur was splatterd with blood, the scarf around it's neck as well. One of it's legs bore large teeth marks.
The pup coward as kenya looked down on it.
Poor thing, she thought, her heart swelling with sympathy.
"Are you okay?" she asked gently.
The pup blinked, then flung itself foreward and clung to kenya's leg, it's entire body shaking with sobs. The black female lowerd her head and licked the pups head confertly. "Shh, it's okay." she murmerd softly.
----------------
"Hows she doing?"
Ryker turned towards the black female as she stepped through the door. He sighed. "Kid hasen't said a word since you left. Not that I can blame her. Poor things probaley scarred out of it's mind."
Kenya nooded slowly and looked over where one of the other police dogs was trying to coax the pup to talk.
"Any idea what happend?" Ryker asked.
Kenya shrugged. "Lance found out that the other three were killed early this morning. The stray probaley heard the fighting."
The male nodded gravely. "It's a sad thing when such a young one has to loose it's family."
Kenya avoided the cheifs gaze and looked back at the pup. "Let me try talking to her."
Ryker gave her the go ahead nod, and Kenya walked over. As soon as the pup saw her, it sprinted over and ducked behind her legs. Kenya nodded at the other dog, who shrugged and left.
Kenya looked down at the pup. "Hey there." she said softly. The pup looked up at her. "You wanna tell me your name?" Kenya asked gently.
"Melodi." the pup anserwd quietly.
"Melodi, I need to ask you what happend, okay?" the black female said. Melodi nodded slowly. "Do you think you can tell me?" Kenya urged gently.
The pup was silent for a minute, then she looked down at her paws. "They killed my parents and brother." she whisperd.
"Who did?"
"The big black dog and the others." Melodi anserwd. "They came and killed them." Tears began spiling over her cheeks. "A-and, they tried to kill me."
Kenya licked Melodi's cheeks. "It's okay now. They won't hurt you, I promise." she whisperd softly as the pup burried her face in the black females fur.
----------------
"Okay, so what do we know?"
Ryker looked toward Kenya, who sat by the window. The black female turned to face the group of officers Ryker had called together. Riseing to her aws, she went and stood at the front.
"So far we know that this pup, Melodi, is the only survior of a killing. We don't know by who, but they aprently had some history with the parents."
"How do we know this?" Ryker asked.
"Melodi said the black dog, the leader, said that they couldn't run from him forever." Kenya told him.
"Does she know what he ment?" Odis, one of the officers, asked.
Kenya shook her head. "She says she doesn't."
Ryker nodded. "Okay. What do we know about the pup?"
"Melodi says she was adopted by Roy and Violet, the two older dogs. Korik was their only son. They used to live in Alaska,"
"Whoee, no wonder that pup wears that scarf." Jake, another officer, joked.
Kenya ignored him and continued. "and that Roy said they had to move. She doesn't know why. They came here on boat."
Ryker nodded and Kenya sat back down. "Okay dogs, we can pobaley assume this gang, or whatever they are, wants this pup dead, for whatever reason. Lance," he barked, nodding at Lance and the dog next to him, "you and Kora are to find out how many dogs attacked and where they came from, understood?" The two dogs nodded.
"Odis, take a group and check the forest. Find out if they've been there." Ryker told the orange dog, who nodded.
"The rest of you are to find out as much as you can about this gang." the rest of the officers nodded and dissmersed.
'Sir, what do you want me to do?" Kenya asked.
Ryker smiled. "I'm apointing you as Melodi's bodyguard."
Kenya nodded and turned to go, but Ryker stopped her. "And I'm calling in a favor from a friend to send his best officer over to help you."
The black female whirled around. "What? You mean, your giving me a partner?" she asked incrediously.
Ryker nodded and held up his paw as Kenya started to protest. "I won't hear anymore. We don't know what this gang is capable of and I'm not risking one of my best officers. Your getting a partner, and thats final."
And with that, he rose and left, leaving Kenya frozen where she was.
I can't have a partner. Not after what happend to the last one.
