Hello! Welcome to my topic. Now some of you may have seen my black cat Chloe.

Now I adore black cats which sort of comes along when you own one xD. I made this topic to cover all the superstious parts of black cats and various other cat problems and answers that need to be crossed.

Black cats, are you superstious?

Well august and the whole summer is flying past and unfortunatly (for me anyway) halloween is coming and everyone atleast sees one black cat constume or a cat hissing and looking generally evil -.- Now as I own one I know very well that they are incredibly affectionate and loveable and mine has never hissed or scratched anyone.

But I was shocked when a little girl walked past my house and saw Chloe sitting on the window sill and said "Look Mummy a witches cat!" I was rather annoyed about this as witches were evil characters. All the mum did was laugh and said yes, honey.

Now I would like to say that I no many people here will agree with me and know them as affectionate creatures but here are some quotes that get my point across.

These quotes are from meowmiester.com

Quote:
Most of us have heard the old superstition of how unlucky it is to have a black cat cross your path, but not all superstitions regarding cats are bad ones, and anyone who has ever owned a black cat will likely tell you that they are no more unlucky than any other. Black cats are thought of as objects of terror perhaps because of the unlucky and evil associations with the color black itself, perhaps aided by the difficulty of seeing a black cat in the darkness and the fear that arises when one pops up unexpectedly.

Halloween time is a particularly popular time for black cats to make an appearance, both in real life and in the stores and shops that we frequent. We might find decorations featuring black cats on lawns, in windows, and on everything from paper plates to posters and stickers for the holiday. Black cats might not appreciate all of this attention if they only knew what it signified!

In most of these decorations, the black cat is found in an aggressive stance, back arched, fangs bared, eyes, if they are visible, often narrowed to slits or glowing terrifyingly. These images are meant to conjure a sense of fear from those who see them, or at least a bit of spine tingling nervousness in the name of Hallowe’en fun. Additionally, the black cat is often seen accompanying the gap-toothed hag on this scary holiday.

The association of black cats with witches and hags is one that stretches back through the years to the dark ages and perhaps beyond, with these animals being held in fearful contempt and known to cause bad luck. Black cats, depending on the region, were thought to bring illness and misfortune upon a home, or to be witches in disguise.

Some people still treat the black cat with such fear and contempt that it is not good to be a black cat wandering the streets in October. People have been known to brutalize and kill these animals in the most gruesome ways, and the activities are often blamed on witches, cults, or Satanists, though it is equally if not more likely that the crimes are perpetrated by particularly cruel teens.

The truth is that black cats have no more power than any other feline, and while they might be particularly dangerous if they like to sleep on the stairs at night, they are no more deadly than any other cat, either. In Britain and Japan it is even considered fortunate to have a black cat cross your path, and in Scotland it is lucky if you find a strange black cat on your porch.

There are superstitions world wide about everything from black cats to umbrellas, and it would be dizzying to try to track them all. Instead, it seems like a much better option to take a black cat (or any cat) into your home and into your heart. A black cat is certainly no quick ticket to a lifelong curse!

I hope this helps any black cat owners feel good about their friendly feline and if anyone calls your cat 'evil' give them the lecture it always works. This car insurance advert seriously annoyed me D:

I would like to know what you think.

I used to have one, he ran away/died. He had a white star on his chest. And then my friend had one too. They are misunderstood cats, just because of their fur color.

I have a black cat named Solstice and I had another one named Tooncess. I love black cats!

Hm.. I don't think I know of anyone who has called black cats evil. What would make them evil anyway, because they're a "Witches cat"? Ha, yeah right. Witches aren't even evil! People just make up their own lies about withces and say that they worship the devil and all of that foolishness. Witches don't worship the devil, nor are they evil. So how would the black cats, being a witches cat, make them evil? Black cats were witches familiars to the witches, or in other words their companians (and still are). They were never allied with devils. All you people that think withces are evil, go do some research. :?

And to those people who think that black cats are bad luck, you're just stupid.

But it is also known that if you bring a black cat into your home it's good luck. So that's nice. hehe

Banshee- I totally agree with what you've said here. I think people have adapted so much they can't even remember the good witch from the Wizard of Oz. I agree it is a completely rediculous bunch of lies.

I'm glad to see that you agree with me! I just think that it's depressing when people call witches evil.

And since my dad is pagan, I usually get offended by these things, :/

Technically this is an equal but opposite claim. If you're so keen on knocking down the "black cats are bad luck" notion, logic would suggest that you'd be equally skeptical about the assertion that they bring good luck.

Anyways, I'm not getting into the whole witches-are-devil-worshipers thing. Doesn't interest me. I do have something to add about the black cats though. Regardless of whether or not black cats bring good/bad luck, they were helpful back in the dark ages. Cats hunt rats and possibly other rodents that carry diseases. Since people had such a superstition about black cats, and killed them, disease was more common. I believe this act contributed to the rapid spread of the Bubonic Plague in Europe. Regardless of what people considered black cats to be, they did do a service to humanity by helping to limit the spread of disease.
