I'm talking about the first DVD pack... I am unable to see the french subtitles - they don't display anything, while the english ones work fine. Although the DVD covers DO mention french subtitles (and I can activate it, just can't see anything) Well, I can read english without much trouble, but I was wondering if that was a problem with VLC (that I'm using to read them) or is it the same thing for everyone? Note : I'm not watching the french voiceover because it is a catastrophy in every possible way. They renamed it "Super Baloo", when honestly, he is more an anti-hero than the opposite. The intro makes me want to vomit. They changed ALL the lyrics with childish ones. When watching it in french, it looks like completely different episodes...But that's not surprising since the original voice actors were so excellent. They also gave Don Karnage a stupid accent, finishing ALL his sentences by "age" (pronounced like his name) which is plain awful. And he really didn't need an additional accent, he has already so many that we don't even know where these come from Anyway... On the second DVD pack it's the opposite. (no voiceover, but french subtitles work - which I prefer...) but I think it's normal.

Odd, I just got my DVDs a few days ago, and I'm also using VLC... On the first volume there is an option for French voice overs but no option for French subtitles, only English. While on the second volume there IS the option for French subtitles but not voice overs. I checked on the back of the boxes and for volume one it says "French language track" but nothing about subtitles. On volume two it says "French subtitles" but nothing about voice overs. If you the covers mention French subtitles and you can enable them, but with no effect, maybe Disney just goofed. It wouldn't be the first time. Possibly your volume is on of the first produced before the mistake was caught and corrected. Here's some screengrabs of my DVD setup menus if you want to compare. http://www.mediafire.com/?o5himm2fmgx (80 k)

Ok then, it seems normal...I thought I read somewhere that the first package had french subtitles, but now that I have checked again, it's not mentioned on the cover.
But it's still strange. Because on the DVDs in the first package, I CAN choose french subtitles with VLC, although nothing's displayed. Well actually I have discovered this is not entirely true : on this subtitles track, some things are translated in some particular scenes, like "Higher for hire" - but not the actual dialogues. I wonder what's the meaning of this...
That's a shame though.
BTW, since you're using VLC : do you have some problems reading the DVD 2 of the second package? I can't read it directly - I had to rip it on my computer before being able to read it, otherwise it wouldn't display anything...Not a major problem, but still strange too.

I can choose 'Video -> Subtitles Track -> Track 2' on VLC's menu but I don't see any subtitles. (I only watched a few minutes of one episode though.) As you can see from the screengrabs, it's not even an option on the DVD setup menu. Maybe Disney changed their minds midstream and decided not to include French subtitles. But rather than delete the subtitle track from the DVD they simply removed the option to select it on the DVD setup screen. I've seen before where certain content, like a video segment, will be inaccessible through the DVD menu but can be played by clicking on the segment's *.VOB file. Maybe VLC is reading the still embedded incomplete subtitle track.
No, I didn't have any problems with v2-d2. Playing directly from disc and mounted ISO both work fine, although the first ISOs I ripped of v2-d1 was corrupt, I ripped it successfully on the second try.
BTW, what did you rip your DVDs as? ISO? AVIs? ... Just curious.

(which is fine, I want to keep the best quality and not have to bother going into the menus to watch a particular episode) So it works for you, then maybe it's related to the fact that my DVD drive is region 2 while the DVD is region 1...(which is why I'm using VLC) Not a big deal though, as long as I can watch them.

Of course, there's no point for non-french speakers to use subtitles. I was just curious about that "problem".
