Kanti rested her eyes. She had been watching Casey for hours...oh, when was Coal getting back? But she couldn't sleep now. If she did, her son would do something bad...not that he was a naughty pup (if you could still call him a pup,) but he was curious and that might lead him into trouble. She tried to stay awake when she heard the click of the door. She glanced up, along with Casey.
Coal entered. He had been out with his owner, the Vet, whom took care of Kanti's owner, Ali. Coal looked at his mate. He could see the exhaust in her eyes. He licked her. "Go to sleep, I'll watch Casey," He said, "Tomorrow, we can take a walk around town...
Jed padded down the street. It was three weeks since his accident. He couldn't see or hear anything on the right side of his face, and he had lost his tail as well and a limb. He snarled at a passing shadow. He didn't want anything coming to him. But if that was the case, then he probably had chosen the wrong time to come outside, for there would be many dogs on the streets.

Jed stared at three dogs in the other side of the street. They looked...happy. So very happy. He narrowed his working eyes as he trotted, head low, over to what the smiles where about.
"DAD!" Yelled Casey, jumping towards Coal.
"Gee, son, don't you ever get tired?" Asked Coal, fur ruffled at the surprise.
Casey looked up innocently at his father. "No."
"Well, if you are calm, and let your mother rest, maybe I'll take you outside today. Go on a walk, you know? Get you energy out."
"Okay."

Jed saw the dog smile. He was somewhat taken aback. Another dog, smile at him, Jed, the broken down guard dog, as if a normal dog? As if not injured and weak? As if not grumpy all the time? He walked over to the dog, who was talking to some others.

"uh...." Said Jed, surprised that this dog just spoke to him like and equal. "I was just, walking. You know, Around." He tried to keep the scarred side of his face shielded from the dog. This was his first chance in a long time to meet someone new, and he was afraid the dog wouldn't accept his scars and injuries.

Jed hesitated. He wasn't sure whether or not to tell the dog what happened. Finally, perhaps against his better judgment, he answered. "M...my brother got killed by something, so I went off into the forest to ind what killed him and...it did this to me." He turned away slightly.
Casey was itching to go outside, but he had to stay calm. It was harder than ever.
Kanti awoke from her rest. Coal was looking at her. "Yes?" She asked, a gentle laugh behind her voice.
"I'm taking Casey on a walk through town, if you don't mind," Said Coal, smiling.
"Go on," Kanti whispered,and lay her head back down.

Jed sighed. Of course, they stopped talking to him. Almost all dogs did that...at least, the few who talked to him at all. Why should these ones be any different? He walked away, his head hung low.
Casey wagged his tail and bounded out the door, followed by Coal. "Hurry up, Dad!" Casey called, and rushed off to see who was in town. Maybe he'd meet up with his aunt Saba. Or perhaps see one of his siblings. Erin? Inkstripe? Kalliak, perhaps? Maybe even Ray. Or, better yet, he could meet new friend. Opportunity stretched ahead of him as he went through town.
