I recently was watching animal planet, and guess what I heard? The breed, Irish Wolfhounds, were originally bred to hunt and kill wolves. The fiends! How could someone breed a dog to kill the species that created dogs in the first place?? Does anyone else feel the same way about this?

Here is a picture of an Irish Wolfhound:

They are alright, but not my type.
The killing part is a shame. How could they?

Borzoi's were also bred to hunt wolves as well..

But neither are used for such practices any longer, no reason to hate the Dog because of it.. They were simply doing what they were bred, trained and told to do...

People back in the day didn't have high regards for wolves, they were "Undesireable" Animals, sad but true, as much as I hate the fact that wolves were Hunted like that way back when, I still love this breed, My uncle has one, and they make good family pets!

I'm a malamute owner myself , as I love big dogs, and My husband and I are thinking about getting one of these one day!

I don't hate the breed either. I actually love the breed. I prefer big dogs over lap dogs any day. I'm just saying how sad it is that people bred a dog to kill an animal that without it, there would be no such thing as a dog in the first place. Some people are sick. =(

I hate how everyone immediately hates people/dogs that were bred/hunt wolves.

I mean seriously you just go. "OMG They deserve to die they kill our precious wolves!" -foams-

I love wolves but seriously, its annoying.

I agree with what Dunkin said. Its no reson to hate a breed. Back then most people relied on their livestock (pigs and sheep and cattles etc, etc.) But the wolves probably saw it as easy prey and good for the winter months.

So of course the humans wanted a dog to stop such tradgedies happening and there we are, thats where our big irish wolf hounds come in.

Also I am suprised some people didn't know this before, there is a clue in the name ;]

I think thats why they love them so much, just because it has the word WOLF in it, which is incredibly sad/stupid.

Agreed w/ SoraSockz... -.-' Nobody seems to understand from the livestock owners' point of view - wolves weren't considered 'beautiful majestic creatures that are just soo misunderstood :'( " ... wolves were/are parasitic pests. Domestic sheep/cattle/what have you would be an easy meal for them.. and of course a good farmer isn't going to let his animals (equal to food & money, aka his life source) be taken down w/o defending them or fighting back in some way. Sure, it'd sad when they're killed to near extinction, but that wasn't the case when all these wolf-hunting breeds were brought about. Think about it.

"How dare they kill such beautiful wild wolfies! Why can't they leave them alone?! They were only trying to eat one little farm aminal... and maybe another next week... and probably some more in the winter...and hey the wild deers are too hard to catch sometimes... god people are so evil and mean and twisted... >:'( "

...

no I don't hate wolves, I just try not to let my vision become clouded by dreams of beautiful pure-spirited wolf goddesses...

Yes, I understand about the farmers. I know where they come from. But for me, it's hard to understand how the wolves get to the sheep/livestock. Don't they have fences and such? I may be wrong, or wolves may go through, but it's hard for me to get it :(
