Characters

Sinjii ~ Nigon's mate, alpha female of Munto, mother of Kilo.

Nigon ~ Sinjii's mate, alpha male of Munto, father of Kilo.

Kilo ~ Son of Nigon and Sinjii, soon to be alpha male of Munto.

Russet Wolves ~ a pack of wolves in which support the two packs, Munto and Illaisia. Recently, the pack has spilt up into two groups; one that only supports Munto wolves and one that only supports Illaisia wolves. Munto wolves are better preferred and seen as nicer wolves, so they have more supporters. But, the leader of the Russet Wolves believes that both packs have their own great qualities, and he supports both packs. His son, Russet, follows the same belief.

Drearily, the snow came crashing down, little dew drops of frozen rain turned into sloshing piles of mushy cold. It was the perfect day in Northern Alaska. Wolves were scurrying about in the Munto pack, taking advantage of the day. Sinjii, a young female was headed toward her den when she heard a foolish yelp come from her mate.

Nigon went up to her and gave her an affectionate nuzzle and lick on the nose. He chuckled.

In curiousity, of course it would be that she would ask why. But why she wouldn't ask puzzled him. Had he done something wrong? No. He couldn't have. Had he embarassed her? Not likely, since they were mates. So what was it that kept gnawing away at him? He wasn't sure, but he had a feeling he would soon find out.

He followed her into the den, quietly, he wasn't sure why. His instinct keep telling his body what to do, so it was as if he had no will power. He sat next to her, again without a word. She didn't seem to mind; she seemed exactly the opposite, very happy.

This bothered Nigon as he was demanding that he knew why, but his instinct told him to stay put. He screamed inside, wanted to be let free, to be released from the chains that held him....

And then he knew why she was quiet. Out came, as he saw with his own deep red eyes....

A pup.

There it was, right in front of him. And he couldn't be more proud. A wolf like him... a son, with the same coat colors. It slowly tried to breathe. He worried for it, cheered it on hoping it would manage at least for a while....

And yet, instinct kicked in. Not in him, but in Sinjii. She quickly pick up the pup by the tips of her front teeth, grabbing him by the scruff of his neck, where it wouldn't hurt. She planned it all precisely, carefully licking the pup, to help get it to breathe. After it began breathing on its own she placed it near her to begin feeling the warmth and to feed.

Proud he was, but at that moment he could only focus on the pup. His sweet, sweet pup. He studied him, checking his size; too big or too small?, on his frame; would he be bulky or well-framed like the father?, on every detail until he was done and sent out the only word he could think of: "Kilo."

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Sinjii just looked at Nigon and smiled. "Kilo it is, then." she proudly whispered. The very name made her proud.

Nigon frowned. "What am I supposed to tell the rest? Our pup is born, our pup is born. Very well. Very well indeed, but what will I tell the pack? They'll frown. They'll fear the worst. We can't tell them. No we can't tell them. At least, not until he's bigger. Bigger and stronger. Then we'll tell them so. Then we'll tell them.." he was about to continue when Sinjii stopped him.

"Don't worry," she muttered softly under her hot breath. "He'll be fine, you'll see. Let him rest. Let him feed. Let him rest again. Then, we will tell the pack. And I know you worry about the Illaisia-"

"The Illaisia..." Nigon interrupted, a growl growing deep in his chest. "Why those no-good, innocent-acting, evil, little badgers. They better stay far away from my pup or else I'll-"

"Relax....." Sinjii reassured him, licking his fur to push it back down from where it once bristled. "They won't. You'll see. All will come soon. All will come soon. Just focus on Kilo right now. Just on Kilo. My pup. Your pup. Our pup. Kilo. I know your grandfather, Nava, would be proud."

Nigon thought of the majestic grey wolf known as his wonderful grandfather, Nava. The majestic wolf that passed on great legends and would have been very proud had he seen young Kilo. But he then shook his head out of the thought and he focused on the pup. Kilo. And what his mate said. "Oh, but I can't.... not until I know he is safe. Not until I know the Illaisia will never harm our pup. I don't want a repeat of last year's tradegy.... it won't happen, I won't let it. I..." he looked down at his paws now. "I won't lose another pup, no not another one.... no........ no..." his voice was hushed now.

"We have a larger pack than the Illaisia, and the Russet Wolves have few supporters on their side. They mostly support us..... nothing will happen, I promise you that. I promise you that.... at least." she said, barely saying the last two words. She didn't want to worry him in what 'at least' meant. For now their pup was safe, and nothing would change that. Nothing.

But they feared the worst. It was wintery up in the Alaskan wilderness and they weren't sure on whether their pup would survive or not. It was a balance between life and death.... and Kilo was weighing down on it.
