Note to Mods:If this is not allowed or not in the right place, please do what you have to!

Alright,so,I'm planning on talking with my mom or my dad about getting another dog. My father wants a large dog,so do I,I don't know about my mom though. With my dad,I have a black cat and a black retriver mix,but my retriver is...a scary cat and had anger agression towards people due to pervouis abuise as a pup. I'm thinking of a great dane because they are good guard dogs and very good family pets.

Now,my mom and I have a pet chihaha and pomraian mix. He's pretty little and a bit terrirtoral to. I'm scared that either my chihaha(Inuyasha) to be all over the new dog and turn him into a scardy cat or the new dog will attack Inuyasha.

Can anyone help me or suggest other large, protective, but great family dogs. Thank you!

I'm not an expert on dog breeds, but a Great Dane sounds like a good possibility. Also a German Shepherd, if you raise it from a pup or get one that's not too aggressive, might be worth considering. They're protective yet sociable, and from what I hear they're highly trainable (most of my experience involved ones which were already trained, but I imagine that's because it was doable. If you want some more informed input, try asking at your police station. They usually work with German Shepherds.

As DT said, a GSD is a pretty good choice, but you have to be willing to spend a LOT of time with them because they are very intelligent and powerful dogs and if they aren't properly socialised and trained, like all dog breeds they can become a BIIIIG problem!

Here are a few dog breed quizzes that can help you select a breed:

http://animal.discovery.com/breedselect ... orindex.do

http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/search.htm

There are a lot more if you google 'dog breed selector' but these are two of my personal favourites. They give you a wide variety of results and detailed information about the different breeds.

Well,I always thought about a German Shepherd, but I changed my mind. After having my dog Max,I just gave up on all German Shepherds and Labodors for some reason. My dad wants one though, and of course my step mom has to give him the list of responblitiy each time we bring it up. Also the second link to the quizz,it doesn't bring any dog up for me :(

Well, maybe if your stepmom won't allow a big dog like a GS, she could be persuaded to try a smaller breed, or a mixed-breed. Shelter dogs are always in abundant supply, and they often come with their shots and so forth already squared away.

Well,My dad wants a large dog,so no small dogs cause we live in a big house and we have so teenagers across the street always causing trouble and alot of people are complaing of them. But I would never ssearch for a prue bred dog, they ae always a problem in health when I get them.

That's a good point in favor of mutts. And if it's gotta be big, maybe you and your dad should sit down with your stepmom and agree on some terms. Take time to hear and seriously consider her concerns; she might have some you've missed that aren't on the usual lists. Even if she doesn't, just knowing that the two of you are listening and that you value her input and concerns will go a long way.

Newfoundlands are adorable and the best of the best for families with small children. If your family has a small child of course. They are loyal, loving, non-aggressive towards anything so good with other pets, but need a lot of grooming. It's good to give them summer hair cuts because of their long thick fur. Ugh, talking about them makes me want a dog even more. *sniffle* Sorry. They also don't need much exercise besides a walk everyday and a yard to play in for the rest of their energy. They are pretty laid back and are one of the few breeds who don't absolutely hate baths. I think they're perfect dogs. You could get a Newfy mixed with something smaller like a lab. That decrease the size and maybe make the coat not so hot for the dog. : ) But whatever you choose I hope you don't regret it. Though a bad dog is better than no dog...I have no dog...*sniffles again*

I would go for a Border Collie. Intelligent and responsive. Always active.

borer collies are also the worst dog you could have for small homes, apartments, and homes with small or no yards...just saying...

i dont know it said it on animal planet on that dogs 101 show. i wasn't really paying attention to why. i guess because there herding dogs they try to herd other pets and small children. i heard that much. also they have a lot of energy.
