As you can guess from my username, Godzillawolf, I'm a HUGE Godzilla fan. I've always loved the movies, even the old 'childish' Showa (the original series, so called due to the ruler of Japan during that Era) Era films. My favorite movie is Godzilla vs. Megaguirus, where mankind attempts to kill Godzilla with a 'black hole' gun mounted on a satilite but the test firing of the weapon opens a rift to the past, releasing an ancient species known as Meganula, giant, viscious dragonfly-like creatures (if you don't think dragonflies are scary, see one hunting and then scale it up to 7 feet). Eventually they form a swarm and their Godzilla-sized queen Megaguirus awakens.

Anyway, I posted this for the fans on the site who are fans of at least one Godzilla film to discuss the films, as well as the TV series (plural), books, and refrences in other movies. The following things are discussable:

The films
Godzilla the Series and the original Godzilla series from the 60s or so
Books pretaining to Godzilla
Toho's giant monster films that didn't nessarally contain Godzilla (most of these creatures appeared in Godzilla films eventually anyway).
Unmade Godzilla films
And fanfiction you yourself may have written.

Other than the normal rules of the site, please BE RESPECTFUL!!! I cannot stress this enough, be respectful of the other people posting. If you don't like Godzilla, ether say it in a way respectful of those that do or don't post at all. If you do not show respect to others, I will quickly report you to the mods. This is your only warning.

Serious stuff done, please enjoy this thread!

I liked the Godzilla cartoons, both the older ones and the new series that was on Fox Kids awhile back.

I also enjoyed them. I miss Godzilla the Series, it was a great show, much better than the Tristar movie. I did enjoy the Tristar film as a kaiju film, it just wasn't a good Godzilla film but as a kaiju film on its own, it was great. Anyway, I wish they'd bring Godzilla the Series back, the writing was top notch and I loved it, it was true to the spirit of the movies it was based on.

I haven't seen the original, so I can't really comment. But from what I read, Tristar collaborated with Toho to produce something which, in the words of Toho, "embodied the spirit of the original Godzilla in a new body."
As for the series being true to the spirit of the movies, that becomes rather a question of which ones. If you think about it, in some movies Godzilla was depicted as a monster, in others almost a defender of mankind.

I'd say Godzilla the Series embodied the Showa Era Godzilla films, where towards the end Godzilla was a protector of the Earth and mankind. Though it wasn't nearly as silly. The monsters were really cool though, the only thing missing is a verson of Godzilla archrival King Ghidorah. But who knows? Maybe they had planned that but the series got cancled. Cyber Godzilla was based on Mechagodzilla, I haven't seen the show in a long time so I can't remember. Though I remember a Mysquito-like beast that was simular to, but precided, Megaguirus, my favorite monster besides Big G himself.

Yeah, Cyber Godzilla was pretty cool. And it kind of surprised me (although it shouldn't have) that Big G was really the last offspring of the original. I'd still like to know how he grew up so fast.

Yeah, I guess his species mature rapidly. Another intresting fact is the second creature was a sterile male while the original was an asexual female, this was never explained but I guess it helps story wise in not having to worry about him reproducing.

Also, the Godzilla from the Tristar film was renamed Zilla by Toho, due to it being simular but ultimantly too diffrent from Godzilla. They don't have a stance on the Godzilla the Series creature.

I think it's kind of silly for people to get worked up about the differences between originals and remakes. I mean yes, in some cases it goes too far - like when they made the new Cheaper by the Dozen. I've seen the original, and its sequel, both of which were based on true stories. The newer one's similarity began and ended with the title and the number of kids. The plot was entirely different, the parents in the new one were, I think, the epitome of dysfunctionality, and the content... well, let me put it this way. I intend to make the original a permanent member of my movie collectiopn at the first opportunity. The remake is never even entering my house.
But with Godzilla, I think it's totally different. Yes, the classics should certainly be acknowledged, especially the message that the original Godzilla was made to convey. But we're always upgrading everything else in entertainment; bigger, better TVs, faster computers, stronger internet signals. Why can't we have a gigger, faster, stronger monster?

The thing with Zilla is because Zilla and Godzilla were almost complete opposites. Godzilla is a lumbering behemoth, Zilla is built for speed, Godzilla is nearly invincable, Zilla was easily killed by jets, Zilla also lacked the Atomic Ray. The Godzilla the Series Godzilla (or Zilla Jr., as some call him) on the otherhand was an improvement as he was just as fast as Zilla but hade the near indestructability of the original Godzilla, the Atomic Ray, and the strength. That was the reason the creature was named Zilla, it was too diffrent. A you said with the Cheaper by the Dozen remake, there were too many diffrences. Godzilla the Series was more in the spirit of the original. Also, if you're intrested, I found the original idea for the Tristar film's script, titled Godzilla vs. the Gryphon, in which a Godzilla more simular to the GTS (Godzilla the Series) Godzilla battles an alien invader known as the Gryphon.

Well, in the case of Zilla it's important to note that while he (she, it) never used the atomic breath, that doesn't mean it wasn't there. I've never punched any of my roommates, but that doesn't mean I don't have fists.
And yes, I'd like very much to see that script idea.

She had what they called 'Power Breath', which was an extremely flamable gas she expled, there was a good reason, to them, they didn't give her Aomic Breath but I forget, had something to do with realism (then agaim, how realistic is a giant monster?)

Anyway, here is the script, please note, this is the ENTIRE script, not a summery: http://www.scifiscripts.com/scripts/GODZILLA.TXT , its quite a bit of reading, if you don't feel like reading the whole thing, the final battle with the Gryphon is at least worth a read, its very exciting, though the ending is rather violant.

Well, I was able to read some of it. You're right, it was more like Godzilla: The Series, but I prefer how they had the movie go. After all, I would have had a lot more doubts about watching something like that fight scene with my little brother, not to mention some of the language.

I've been a Godzilla fan since I could walk, own atleast 7 of the films including the original, seen atleast 3 or 4 episodes of both TV series and know almost every one of the film monsters!
To start off since you guys are talkin about Godzilla the series, the only way I actually saw it was from youtube,so you can go there to find the episodes. With the GTS Zilla, I don't think that he's as powerful as the toho(japanese) Godzilla, but is a major improvement from the first zilla in terms of strength, intelligence and durability so I have a respect for the series and it's characters.here's a link to my favorite episode of the series:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YTh5tunADPY
Image
The original TV series is known as "Godzilla Power Hour".Though i haven't seen it for over a decade,I still remember some pieces from it such as the theme song:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oEzE1T6jpEw
Image

Back to the films,The ones I own not including the 1998 film since that was tristar are:
Godzilla(1954)
Godzilla vs. Gigan(1972)
Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla(1974)
Terror of Mechagodzilla(1975)
Godzilla vs spacegodzilla(1994)
Godzilla 2000(1999)
Godzilla, Mothra and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack(2001)

The series of films from 1954 to 1975 are known as the "Sh?wa series",1984 to 1995 as "Heisei seies" and the one from 1999 to the present as the Shensei or Millennium series.
Over these 3 periods Godzilla as gone through numerous changes, such as when he first appearrred in the shown,he was slighlt more human like, while in the heisei he became more aggresive and animal like, but still showing a good level of intelligence. The 3rd series had 3 different incarnations, the 1st being the most threatening and and most detailed(except for the final wars verison in my opinion) with him having very large and jagged spines, very rugged looking scales and somewhat more "armorred".
the second being very similar to the heisei verison, but having no pupils in his eyes due to the nature of the film which was very succsessful.
The 3rd also very similar to the heisei verison, but more detailed ,animal-like(again) and in my opinion prehaps the most powerful incarnarion yet.

Thanks for all the info Pirate but you missed one Shinsei verson, the Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla/Godzilla X Mothra X Mechagodzilla: Tokyo SOS verson. It was simular to Godzilla 2000 but was also simular to the Heisei verson as well.

Image The spines are white, as opposed to redish purple of Godzilla 2000, and the head is less crocidilian that 2000's.

I agree that Final Wars Godzilla is about the fiercest of the Godzilla's, his face particularally. That and he was extremely powerful, killing or incapacitating most of his opponents in mere minutes, the exception being Monster X.

Dragon Tamer, I agree as to the violance and language, though I believe the censors would've toned down the violance somewhat, probably removing the graphic decapitation with something tamer but the Gryphon would probably still have been destroyed.

What do you guys think of the upcoming film, Godzilla 3D AKA Godzilla vs. Deathla? Or have you heard of it?
