Completely agree w/ you, Rockandi >,< I sometimes wonder what happened 'round here to the idea of "agreeing to disagree"... it goes both ways, a lot of the time, that people either ARE or AREN'T a fan of something, and seem locked into this opinion like it was their life - not only that but they refuse to accept other peoples' opinions or even respect them about it.

I tend not to really post any of my negative opinions on things like bands, movies, etc. around here... because it's pretty common w/ a lot of members that criticism gets blasted just for showing its face. 9.9 And I'm really a sort of 'keep the peace' kind of person, even if it means stifling my opinions on some things... *sigh*

I agree, we all are diffrent. It's what makes me special. Lol.
This is a "Public" forum, almost anything goes that follows the rules, you don't like Twilight, you are allowed to say that on a Twilight asking if you love it topic.
And what you said about it's for fans or followers, I agree.
There is over 30 spaces to make the title.
But when you are debating, Be respectful.

Agreed, but I'd like to add my two cents:

Although debate is fine, what was generally going on in the particular topic you mentioned was not respectful. I mean, seriously, is it necessary to call people idiots, lemmings, mentally challenged, etc. because they like a particular artist? Granted, not all the posts that disliked Nickleback were calling people names, and people just lashed out in the defense of Nickleback for a rather immature reason, but I wonder, what did you expect? Did you really expect fans of Nickleback to take any points against the band seriously, or the other way around? At the ages at which most people are on this site, musical opinion is so heavily ingrained and important in their minds that they are hardly even going to consider changing their opinions. I admit, even I can be that way, sometimes, about my favorite bands.

Personally, I'd advise against all debates about musical artists. Not that I think they shouldn't happen, but people are generally very polar about their tastes in music (meaning, people either LOVE band A and HATE band B, or HATE band A and LOVE band B), making this a very likely source for a flame war. Almost every debate about people's tastes in music has been locked due to massive flaming and insulting comments. There has been, up until late 2008, an unbroken, unwritten, unofficial rule that topics about bands are reserved for those who are fans of them; if you like the band, post. If you don't like the band, then why do you care enough to post in a topic about this band you don't like? (To me, that is common sense. But, that's just me).

I do agree, though, that specifying who you want to post in a certain topic would be very helpful to prevent flame wars in the future.

I should put a word in to the mods about making it an official rule. The influx of flame wars in the musics section is, I admit, alarming.

Of course, not everyone is going to like what you're posting about.

Recently I've been in a small debate over Nickelback.
I myself am not a fan, but it seems like, when I'd posted my opinion, the topic died.

The first response was something along the lines of, ''THIS IS FOR FANS OF NICKELBACK. GET OUT.''

However, the title and main post did not specify that the thread was only for fans.
I believe that, as long as we're not baiting, we should be able to post our opinions...
The world is full of debate, and here's the thing:

Not everyone likes the same things as you.
.

Have you ever been to a formal Debate? A university or college level debate? When arguing in a debate you have to say agree you're opinion with evidence, not just simply stand up and say 'I hate this.' or 'I dont' agree with this...' and then sit down. If you don't like something you need to say why not just flaming for the sake it because it gets you no where are you lose the debate fair and simple. And in relation to that Nickelback thread I saw a whole heap of baiting, you even said yourself and I quote,
Röckandi wrote:

Consider this baiting if you must (and I'm SURE you will), but:
people who enjoy Nickelback's music are the same people who enjoy Twilight, Hollister, and creating Mary-Sue OCs.
Cliche lyrics are cliche.
Ironic lyrics are ironic.
Bad lyrics are bad.

How is this not baiting then? You've just contradicted your entire post.

Exactly. Some people just like to cause trouble.

I agree with Swords and Kaynight. I never even go to the music section anymore- people are just WAAAYY too hostile there. I'm one of the few that actually like Top 40 pop music and stuff- that includes Lady GaGa, Miley Cyrus etc. but in the music section everyone's all like "HOW CAN YOU LIKE THAT CRAP IT'S STUPID AND GENERIC!!". Well. Maybe some people DO like it. And given how many people hate the stuff I like, I don't even go to that part of forum.

I like Miley Crus lyrics. Some don't. What's there to debate?

I know what you mean. Even though I am a Nickelback fan, I stayed out of that topic because I could tell that the fighting and flaming would start at any moment and I didn't want to get caught up in that. Why can't people accept that everyone is different and will have different sets of likes and dislikes.

For example, I can't stand Miley Cyrus/Hanna Montana, but that's all I'm going to say. I'm not going to go out of my way to bash VividLegacy and insult her based solely on her music choices. I'm not going to call her stupid or anything like that because it is uncalled for. Instead, I'm just going to say I don't like it and move on.

Maybe we should have forum lessons on how to properly disagree with someone.

Oh Locki, you make me lol.

But I agree completely with this topic. It bugs me when people expect you to share their exact opinion. The internet doesn't work like that. people are different, minds are different and opinions are different. If they can't handle that they shouldn't make a topic in the first place.

Agreed, dudes. I've noticed this on other forums when I post my opinions on Twilight (I don't like it.) and here are my rational reasons why.

One moment I'm hitting submit and the next moment they're serving flame-broiled pirate thylacine for dinner complete with an apple in the mouth (emphasis on "flame.")

I'm sorry Rocki, but..
I agree with Swords, Kaynight and Vivid.

there's nothing wrong with going into a topic and saying "I don't really like this.." and give a good reason why.
Saying things like "I can't understand how anyone can like this crap" or "People who like this are a bunch of idiots with no taste" are really not helpful to the topic (or the forum in general), and could really offend some people. so it wouldn't surprise me if people wanted you out of the topic for saying things like this.

some members on the forum (I'm sure we all know who by now) just come into these topics to act childish and offend peoples' tastes. sometimes it's amusing, other times it's just ridiculous.

Debating's fine, as long as it's not offensive.
a lot of stuff against Nickelback in that topic is just stupid, insensitive crap.

Oh I agree there.
That's what this topic is about.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with stating opinions, which is why I find it ridiculous that such a big deal is made out of a little disagreement.
I wasn't the one calling Nickelback fans idiots, by the way.
We all know who's responsible for those antics.

I wasn't saying you were.

I do know where you're coming from. it does get annoying when you say something like "I don't really like Hannah Montana.." and then some kid comes along and says "HOW DARE YOU>!>!??1" (definetely not you, Vivid xD).

this rant makes sense, but sometimes sharing offensive views isn't really very clever.

yeah, we do all know who's responsible.

It's not baiting; trust me.
When you see baiting, you'll know.
Had I said, ''NICKELBACK IS SO DUMB!!!!'', now that would be considered baiting, and I would probably get into deep trouble for it.

So its not Ok to say that but it's alright when you said,
Röckandi wrote:

Nothing has been ''contradicted''.
You simply took an opinion a little too personally.

So insulting other people's taste and then putting them in an untrue sterotype is not baiting them to rebel againt it especially since it's completely UNTRUE and WRONG. Where did you even get that information from? Yes you made it up you have no evidence to prove it. How would you like if I sterotyped you just because you liked something different than me and even worse I just made up a sterotype in head to try and insult your point of view and make you feel bad?

Of course you contradicted yourself you're telling people in your first post not to do exactly what you did in the Nickelback post, in fact you even said in your post
Röckandi wrote:

, you even said the word baiting and that it'll be taken as such, evidence enough? Ask anyone here if that quote I posted by you was baiting and they'll say yes.

Urgh, yes. ._.

But, also, I've noticed alot of this on the shoutbox...I thought it was unbelievably self-centered.

Member A : I like [band here] ! The singer's really hot ! :)

Member B : Ew, I hate them !

Member C : Yeah, I don't like them either at all. They're annoying.

Member A : Oh well, I like them. I think they're cool.:D

Member D : Really? I like them too ! :)

(Member A & D talk about the band a little, while Member B and D talk about other things, not reguarding the band. About 5-10 minutes pass)

Member C : UUUURGH can you guys stop talking about them??!! I hate them :( *angryfornogoodreason*

I honestly *hate* that. What gives someone the right to tell two people having a normal conversation about a band they like to shut up? I find this to be quite rude. (Of course, it's a different story if the people talking about the band are dissing another one, shoving it in someone's face..ect)
