Copper is a dog living with a pack of other dogs. They all have their own story, whether they were born with humans or born in the wild. However, they are constantly fighting with the house dogs in a near by town, who are more vicious than most house dogs. Copper and his brother, Steele, are the heirs to the leadership of the pack. Copper is a dreamer who wants to know what it's like beyond the pack but Steele is perfectly happy hating house dogs and staying with the pack and never leaving. One day, Copper ventures out to town and meets a beautiful housedog named Leaf who is diffrent form teh others and is gentle, kind, and caring. In fact, he meets severel other dogs who are frinedly. He makes a decision and, when he returns to his pack, he informs them that he is leaving them forever. He has a scar across his right cheek where his father slashed him out of fury.
Copper returns to town and settles down as a hunting dog, sharing the owners of Leaf. After a 6 months, he finally tells Leaf that he loves her but she informs him that she isn't interested in being more than his friend and is already in love with his best friend there. Crushed, he runs away from his comfortable house and stays at the edge of town, thinking about how he had changed and all he had done. He sees some house dogs discussing a plan to kill all the dogs in his old pack and talking aobut recruiting the other town dogs. Copper makes a decision and goes back to his pack. He discovers that his parents are dead and his brother is alpha. Copper is alowed to stay with the pack but is not an official member again and no one will listen to him, except for a select few. Plus, the others arenot only angry that he left but they are furious for the fact that he became a hunting dog.
Can he get his brother to listen or will the pack be killed by the town dogs?

Copper lifted his head off his paw and satred at teh leader's den witha sigh. When he was a puppy, he and his brother lived in there. And so did his younger sister. They used ot pretend that they'd all lead together but now the last thign steele wanted to do was stand beside him. What had he done? Why had he ever left for a dog that hadn't even loved him back? He flicked an ear and sighed, putting his hea dback on his paw.

Duke padded to Copper and prodded him in the side with his paw. "Get up. I wanna do some hunting before sunset. Stop your mopping and let's get Finn, maybe Fly if you want. But It hink she left camp already." He flicked his ears, lsitening for the friendly Irish Setter.

Fly raced through the trees, enjoying the wind running through her fur as she went. She loved ot get away for a while and think about anythign but the war with the town. It was pointless and tiring. She was sick of it but there was no escaping it now her brother had returned. He said he heard a plot but Steele wouldn't hear it, thinking it was a trap.
