Hmm, if you're wondering how it could be 'set out', here is an example of how I'd write one:
Uno crawled into the box, whimpering softly to himself. His leg still hurt, but it was starting to numb. He put his head down, looking out into the alley. As his eyes started dropping, the shadows from the dark street took monstrous forms of sleds and guns. He blinked, shaking his head in surprise. He put his head back down, and within seconds, seconds that felt like hours, he was asleep.
Uno looked around, padding slowly through the twisted, red, barren terrain. It was unfamiliar to him, yet he felt as though he had been here before. He heard a scarping sound, and as he looked behind him he saw a faceless dog pulling a giant sled on his lonesome. Uno found this particular sight terrifying in a way, but in which way he didn't know. He turned his big, golden eyes away from the dog, only to look straight into the bare, hypnotising eyes of the Collie. The gold shepherd mix screamed and began to run. Bullets rushed past him, and with each one that hit him sent a burning sensation through his skin. He looked back and realised that there were no bullets, not anymore. The landscape behind him was melting away into flames and it was overtaking him... he felt a searing pain, and heard the mocking howl of a wolf in the distance...
"Hey, kid, are you okay? You were thrashing around in your sleep, yelling this and that..." Uno blinked. Before him stood a big, ginger tom cat. "Oh... yeah... not the best sleep. Who are you?"
By using a combination of my character's past and fears, I created something that for the character himself, would be utterly terrifying. Also you can deform the surroundings a little, and it doesn't really matter if things don't make sense, because we all know that in dreams, they rarely do.

Hey, JerseyCaptain, I want to say thanks for posting a link to my stuff! Very cool. To answer Alue26's question: when I want to write about a nightmare, I think of one I've had that gave me the kind of emotions I want to show the reader. Then I adapt it to fit my story. In other words, if you try to capture what scared you, then it can be used to scare your reader as well. Hope this helps. Also, I think VividLegacy's reply answered the question very well. Follow that template and you'll have a good scene. Cheers!

I simply did a web search using "writing about nightmares" as the parameters. Your page on that site came up. It's nothing more than a poll, but hey - it's a vehicle for discussion. You're welcome though. No, WDC is not "my" website. Just tryin' to be polite. I imagine politeness isn't very prevalent in sites like this.
