Okay, all you fans of mine, here's a treat: Deleted scenes from each book of the Wolf Series.
Deleted Scene from "Balto"THIS SCENE TAKES place during “A Wolf, a Race and a Legacy”, and was re-written to fit “The Passing Ages”. Later, it was re-written again to fit “Heading Back”.
BALTO LAY IN his boat, thinking over the conversation he had had with Aleu just a few hours before. He didn’t like the idea of dying anymore than she did, but he knew it was inevitable; he was a mortal wolfdog, not a god.
Everybody dies, he found himself thinking. Even stars die eventually.
His mind wandered off, to the scene a few months ago when Dingo was killed. He remembered it all, as if it had happened just seconds before.
The wind had howled quite frantically, tugging at Balto’s fur, causing him to begin shivering. Behind him, just a single dog down the line of sled dogs, was Dingo. Under him, his feet crushed snow, several inches of which lay between him and the hard rock below.
Balto still didn’t know how the sled started slipping, but it did. Dingo, still attached to the sled, slid with it. Balto had made a jump for his son, but he could not catch him fast enough. Dingo had disappeared from sight, but his yells of pain—agony—death—still rang in his ears.
Balto shivered again, not from the cold but from the memories. Dingo… When he had found Dingo, his son was already frozen from the cold. But what had surprised Balto was that he was smiling.
Perhaps he figured death is something funny. Balto shook his head. Stop thinking that! Dingo was my son, for goodness sake. Why did he have to die? He had done nothing wrong…he deserved to live.
But then he realized why Dingo had died—to save him. He had caught Dingo when he was beginning to fall over the cliff, but Dingo had forced him to let go; if Balto had held on, he would have gone too.
He died because he loved me… Balto smiled. Yes, even stars can die out…but love is something that will last forever.
Love can ignite the stars.
Deleted Scene from "Wolfheart"THIS SCENE TAKES place during “Wings of Change”, before the court scene in which Balto announces his decision to look for Duke. For the only time in the series, this scene is through the eyes of someone who is exclusive to their particular story. It was taken out because of its irrelevance to the story.
DUSTY WRIGGLED HER toes extremely slowly, making sure that she could feel them again. Okay, so it seems fine, she sighed in relief. It’s the ‘seems’ that worries me. She put her entire leg down onto the hard floor, gently at first but applying more pressure as time moved on. She smiled, and then turned to Kodi. “I think I’m fine.”
Kodi smiled. “Great!” He gave her leg a gentle lick. “It looks so well now, without that ugly cast on.”
Dusty chuckled. “Well, I’m glad you’re glad.” She sighed. “What do you think of your father and his case for Duke?”
Kodi was silent for a moment, his smile disappearing. After a while, he sighed. “Dad has his own opinions, as we all do. Just between you and me, I think he’s just a little overdramatic. Duke can take care of himself.” He looked into her eyes. “Why? What do you think?”
Dusty shrugged. “I think he really is in trouble. Whether we should help rescue him or not…that’s a different story.” She sighed. “It’s just one thing that gets at me: we are called ‘Man’s best friend’, but here we are discussing whether to help him or leave him. It doesn’t seem like we’re friends to him, does it?”
Kodi slowly shook his head, though he didn’t say anything. He simply turned around and walked away, trying to take in all Dusty had just said.
Deleted Scene from "Aleu"THIS SCENE TAKES place after Muru was crushed by the boulder in “The Unexpected”. In it, Varadan remembers stories Aleu had told him about some of her old friends, who died before she returned home in “Journey Home”. It was taken out because of its irrelevance to the story.
ALEU SAT DOWN, staring at the lake that she and Varadan had decided to stay beside for the night. She was lost in her thoughts…and Varadan really couldn’t blame her. So much had happened in just the past few days, she deserved some time to herself.
He recalled a time when Aleu was still leader of her wolf pack. During her final few months there, her pack had fought a herd of caribou. It had ended in tragedy when four of her closest friends died, trampled by the stampede.
Varadan sighed. Aleu’s life is so full of death…I wish there was something I could do for her. He lay down, determination filling his heart. I can at least do one thing: I will never leave her, even through death…I swear it.
