I'll grant that he is grayer in Wolf Quest and Wings of Change...but that's because he's older. By Balto III, he's three years older than in Balto I.

He is a grey-brown or a grey-tan. In some scenes, like when he is in the blizzard, his fur looks grey, because it's dark and cloudy. In WQ, they made him grey to make him look more like a wolf (but I think it makes him look less wolfish) and to look more like Aleu (I think that Aleu is grey). In WoC, his fur looks like a dark brown-grey.
So really, as long as he's still brownish grey, it doesn't really matter what shade he is. Because the animators obviously didn't care.
Oh, and if you say his fur is greyer in WoC because he is older, what about Muk&Luk? They didn't get any older. Three years and they're still cubs...

I think that it is all in our heads as far as colors go. We all see things a little differently so opinions differ. To some people Balto is brown, to others he is grey. To me he's both!

Balto is brown, true. However, later on in the film his fur color turns into a brownish-grey. This is because in each film he is aging, so he's begun to grow grey hair. You can tell he's aged a lot in life throughout the films as well because his pups go from pups to adults, so Balto's age is getting rather old.
Hope this helped clear some things up,
emily123.

Eh, different artists once again but, like I said before the artists likely saw the colors differently than we do. Likely they weren't able to get ahold of the orgional hues so they tried to match it with their own. And there is the also the concept of lighting. Some of the lighting in Balto WQ was dramatically different than those in the first movie. Hence, we will have different colors. Of course, this is only what I think.

Basically, he's both colours. They just altered his colour model a bit in WQ and WoC, I guess, to make him look older. Which was a good move.
Plus in some scenes his fur colour is different anyway depending on the lighting.
