I need help! I REALLY want a dog, but me and my dad are allergic. I hear that poodles, maltese, and bichon and mixes between them, like bichon-poos, are good for people with allergies. Does anyone have an allergy or know someone with one? I you do, please let me know which breed seems to be the best!

From what I understand, yes, the breeds you listed are good for allergy-sufferers (or at least better than something like say, a husky). A Chinese crested or Peruvian hairless could also be good options, I think... If you really really want a dog, my suggestion is this: do your homework, search "hypoallergenic dog breeds" and find something you think could work out - present your findings to your family and see what they think... remember to bring up some valid arguements, too, if you really want to be persuasive - "I want a puppy please please please" doesn't usually work ;3 Mention the benefits of having a dog and be willing to take responsibility for the pet yourself. How severe are you and your dad's allergies? Heh, my dad is allergic to cats... but he ended up being the one to get us our first pet, a cat, and now we have 3 (and 2 dogs).. he 'just dealt with it' for a while but eventually he kind of got an immunity to our own pets Good luck!

Take this test: http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/search.htmFill out the test honestly, then browse through the breeds it shows. On the first question, where it asks "Are you looking for a purebred or a hybrid dog?" I suggest you select purebred.

Thanks everyone! I have tried persuading them, but thanks anyway! And beleive me, I spent four hours in the past few days researching! I wanted to know if you have allergies and if a breed worked well for you. Sorry if I worded it wrong. And thanks VividLegacy, I'll take the quiz!

I forgot to say my dad's allergies are kind of bad. He usually starts sneezing after the first half hour or so. My allergies aren't as bad, I could tolerate a chocolate lab for a couple hours. iWolf213, that Westie is SO cute!!! I took the quiz, and it found 14 dog breeds! Here they are: 1-Australian Labradoodle 2- Bedlington Terrier 3-Cocker Westie 4-Kerry Blue terrier 5-Labradoodle 6-Mini Goldendoodle 7-mini Labradoodle 8-Petite Goldendoodle 9-Portugese Water Dog 10-Schnoodle 11- Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier 12-Tibetan Terrrier 13- Whoodles 14-Xoloitzcuintle Have you had any of these breeds? Which one have you had good experiences with? Thanks again!

Reason being is that poodles are one of the most hypoallergenic dogs around. Just thought I'd throw that out there. It seems to be the only one I know of that hasn't been mentioned already. Plus, they may be a bit less costly than the designer breeds, too.

yeah, i've considered getting a poodle. Maybe a Soft Coated Wheaten or a Westie. I can't deside what size of dog i want. I know I don't want a big dog, so I'd prefer a medium size or toy/small size. But what size is better???? I know small dogs can develope Small Dog Syndrome. I could probably prevent that, but I obviously have never owned a dog. But I kinda want a small dog anyway, since you can pick them up and cuddle with them. So yeah, what size should I get?

Hi there. i have really bad allergies to most pets (at the age of 8 i had to give my guinnea pig away because of my allergy.
This might not be the best way to go about this, but i got my dog (border collie crossed with a labrador) about 7 months ago. to begin with i thought it wasnt the best idea as my eyes were bloodshot and id sneeze and have a runny nose constantly but i remebered i was allergic to nuts and i was given very small amounts of peanuts for years and now i can eat as many as i want and not have a problem.
Anyway back to my dog... for about a month i had my puppy sleeping on the bed next to me at night, i would take her where ever i went and let her lie on me when i was sat down.
Now i feel fine around her i can keep my face next to her all the time and feel no sign of sneezing or my eyes are not red.
So i am guessing that from me just putting up with it i built an immunity to the allergy.
BUT I AM NOT SAYING JUST GO AND DO WHAT I DID AS IT MAY AFFECT YOU DIFFERENTLY AND CAUSE MORE SERIOUS PROBLEMS.

Sorry about the guinea pig nonoboldie! After extreme research and looking through breeders, I've deccided the dog breed I really want...... POODLE! I just can't decide what size! HELP! Anyway, heres why I decided the poodle: - They are low shedders, which, on every website I've seen, have been recommended for allergy sufferers - The Poodle is one of the most intellegient dogs - They are easy to housebreak - Easy to train - Companions that don't "cling" to one person and get over protective - They can live a long, healthy life if treated right So, this is my discision. I just hope my parents can find a breeder in the area and see how it goes. I might get a puppy this Summer! OH YEAH!

I you do, please let me know which breed seems to be the best! I actually have an extremely close friend who's dad is like extremely allergic to dogs, so they got a little cute poodle. I learned that poodles might do you and your dad good Sapphire, 'cause they don't really have fur it's like hair or something. It doesn't have dandruff. Another example of this, is I love cats, but my Ma's allergic. But one day we went to the shelter and fell in love with one, so my Ma decided to get her even though she was allergic, but we take care of her and my Ma takes allergy meds so we're fine with her now. I hope that helps more on your dog descion. Stormer23

I would suggest the miniature poodle. There are three types of poodle, the Toy, the Miniature and the Standard. Here's the info on the Miniature: http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/miniaturepoodle.htmI think you should get the miniature because like you said, you want a small dog. But just to me I think the toy looks too delicate. Really, I think it's between the toy and the mini, but really it's just up to you.

Yeah, Poodles do have hair. It looks like I should get a poodle! VividLegacy, thanks for the suggestion. That's what I was thinking too! This is random, but they say owners look like their dogs, and with my poofy, curly hair ( that everyone despises), I look kinda like a poodle. Just the hair though. NO I DON'T HAVE A TAIL!!!
